CBI officer probing Aircel-Maxis case allegedly involving P Chidambaram gets extension

A CBI officer probing the Aircel-Maxis case allegedly involving former finance minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram was today given a two-year extension by the central government, according to an official order. The central government has approved extension in deputation tenure of Vineet Vinayak and Bhanu Bhaskar, both working as Joint Directors in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), it said. Vinayak, a 1995-batch IPS officer of Sikkim cadre, will have extended tenure till September 9, 2020, the order issued by the Personnel Ministry said. He is looking into the Aircel-Maxis case and also the in-charge of probe in the case of data breach by the UK-based firm Cambridge Analytica (CA). P Chidambaram and his son were named in the charge sheet filed by the CBI in the Aircel-Maxis case on July 19. HC seeks Centre's stand on plea for removal of Jamia professor

The Delhi High Court today sought the Centre and the Jamia Millia Islamia University's stand on a plea seeking setting aside of the reinstatement of a professor who was removed from the varsity over allegation of plagiarism. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the Centre and the university seeking their reply to the petition which has sought contempt action against various officials of the varsity for allegedly fabricating a court order to facilitate the professor's re-instatement. The plea, by a former student of the university, has alleged in that the professor had copied from a book -- Media, Markets and Democracy -- in his book -- Democracy and Media. The petition has said that the university had in May 2011 removed the professor who had challenged the decision in the high court where a single judge in September 2011 and a division bench in April 2012 had affirmed the step taken by the varsity. Sukma encounter: Chhattisgarh opposes in SC plea for independent probe

The Chhattisgarh government today opposed in the Supreme Court a plea seeking an independent probe into the August 6 incident in which 15 alleged Maosist were gunned down in an encounter in Sukma district, claiming that "bogus claims" have been made in the plea. The state government told a bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud that photographs attached with the plea were not of the alleged incident. Senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Chhattisgarh, told the apex court that the petitioner has claimed that one woman was also killed during the August 6 encounter, but no such thing has happened. "Bogus petition has been filed in support of the Maoists," Rohatgi told the bench, which asked the petitioner to file a better affidavit in the matter. Bangladeshi declared govt teacher relieved from NRC work

A government school teacher was today relieved from the works of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) after the Morigaon district administration came to know that he was declared a Bangladeshi by a Foreigners Tribunal, an official said. The government teacher has been assisting the NRC update works and he is not entitled to take any decision about inclusion or exclusion of any applicant, Morigaon Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hemen Das said in a statement. He "has been declared as a foreigner by the Foreigners Tribunal Morigaon but his case is pending before the Guwahati High Court," he said. Three 'drunken' men arrested for causing public nuisance in Rajouri

Three persons, allegedly in an inebriated state, were arrested today for creating public nuisance in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, police said. Police were on routine patrolling on a highway stretch when a chaos like situation was seen in Siot market, they said. During questioning, it was found that three persons boarded in a car were in a drunken state and creating nuisance at a public place, police said. According to police, the accused, identified as Davinder Singh, Jatinder Singh, and Inderpal, were arrested and their car was seized. A case was registered against the accused at Dharamsal police station, they said.

Man, son sentenced to 10-yr jail term in Punjab

A special court here sentenced a man and his son to 10 years of imprisonment in a drug case today. Judge Jagdeep Sood convicted Gurcharan Singh and his son Malkiat Singh, according to prosecution. A fine of Rs 2 lakh each was also imposed on them. They were arrested by the Anti-Narcotics Cell of Punjab police for bringing 80 kg of poppy husk in a truck in July 2014. The two men were booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Centre faces HC ire on allotment of new DRT office in Mumbai

The Bombay High Court asked the Union Ministry of Finance today to ensure allotment of new premises for the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) in the city after the existing office was shut following a fire. A bench of justices AS Oka and RI Chagla said the government must not take an adversarial stand on the issue, and instead, work on eliminating any holdups that might be coming in the way of providing a new office space for the tribunal. The bench also dismissed the argument made by the Union government counsel Rui Rodrigues that lack of funds was one of the reasons for the delay in providing a new space for the tribunal in the financial capital. The DRT had been operating out of the Scindia House building in the Ballard Estate area in South Mumbai, but the premises was shutdown in June following a fire. SC notice to UP govt in Hapur lynching, asks IGP to probe & report

The Supreme Court today directed a senior Uttar Pradesh police officer to probe the Hapur lynching case in which one person was killed and another brutally assaulted in the name of cow vigilantism, while terming the allegations of the survivor as "serious". It sought a response from the Uttar Pradesh government on the matter and directed Meerut's Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate the incident and file a report in two weeks. PNB scam: Court takes cognisance of Prez sanction to prosecute Ananthasubramanian

A special CBI court today took cognisance of the sanction granted by the President to prosecute Usha Ananthasubramanian, former managing director of Punjab National Bank and Allahabad Bank, in the Rs 14,000 crore PNB scam. Ananthasubramanian was today dismissed from service by the government, according to an official notification. She was to superannuate today. ED seeks cancellation of bizman's bail in bank fraud case

The Enforcement Directorate today approached a Delhi court seeking cancellation of the bail of an accused in the over Rs 5,000-crore bank loan fraud case, alleging that he refused to appear before it despite repeated summons. In the application filed before the Additional Sessions Judge, the ED's special public prosecutors N K Matta and Nitesh Rana urged the court to cancel the relief granted to Delhi-based businessman Gagan Dhawan, who was earlier arrested by the ED and is currently out on bail. The agency claimed that he refused to appear before it for confrontation with Ranjit Malik, who had allegedly sent Rs 25 lakh cash to the official residence of a senior Congress leader here. Top cop orders verification of child care institutes in Odisha

In the wake of two recent cases of sexual abuse in shelter homes of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, Odisha DGP RP Sharma today directed all superintendents of police to carry out a verification of child care institutions in the state, an official statement said. The instruction was issued to the officers apprehending similar incidents in Odisha, it said. "All SPs should monitor the security situation at the shelter homes and submit weekly reports to the state police headquarters. They should also sensitise the police officers in their areas to keep a watch on any suspicious activities at the facilities," the statement said quoting Sharma. A 15-year-old girl was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir following which her relatives staged a protest on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, a police official said today. Simran Rakwal, a Class 9 student, was found dead inside her house at Karool village yesterday, he said. Constable booked on graft charges in J&K

An FIR was lodged against a police constable in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district today for allegedly taking a bribe from a person to get his son appointed in the department. Mohammad Aslam, a resident of Sathra Tehsil of Mandi, lodged a complaint alleging that Nazir Hussain Shah had demanded and accepted Rs 75,000 from him in lieu of getting his son recruited as a constable in the police department, a statement from the J&K State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) said. A preliminary inquiry prima facie established the allegations, leading to the registration of a case against Shah under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, the statement said. Gangster Arun Gawli tops exam on Gandhian thoughts

Gangster Arun Gawli, serving life sentence for murder, has topped an exam based on Gandhian thoughts. An inmate of the Nagpur central prison, Gawli scored 74 out of 80 marks in the examination, based on the concept of the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Around 160 prisoners appeared for the examination, conducted by NGOs Sahyog Trust, Sarvoday Ashram and Mumbai Sarvoday Mandal in October last year. The result was declared last week, Sahyog Trust trustee Ravindra Bhusari said. Appearing for the exam is not mandatory and prison inmates appear for it out of choice, Bhusari told PTI. In the exam, inmates have to answer 80 objective type questions. Those who pass the exam receive a certificate and Khadi clothes as a prize. "Before the exam, study material on Gandhiji's books was provided in the jail," he said. The examinees included convicts, under trials and those serving jail terms, he added.
