Two accused surrender in Kerala Orthodox church case

Father Sony Varghese and Father Jaise K. George, accused in the sexual harassment case in Kerala's Malankara Orthodox Church, surrendered before the Thiruvalla Session Court on Monday.The Supreme Court on August 6 rejected their anticipatory bail pleas and directed them to surrender.The Apex Court observed that petitions of the accused priests were devoid of merit.The case came to light in June when a woman accused four priests of Malankara Orthodox Church in Kottayam for allegedly sexually assaulting her.The woman registered a complaint after her husband recovered an audio clip related to the case. The accused allegedly threatened to disclose the victim's confessions made in church.Initially the case was investigated by the church, but was later transferred to the crime branch.The Malankara Orthodox Church had suspended all the priests after the complaint was filed. TRS MP's son held on charges of sexual harassment: Police

Ruling TRS MP D Srinivas' son Sanjay was arrested on charges of sexually harassing 12 students of his college in Nizamabad, police said today. Sanjay was arrested when he appeared before Nizamabad Assistant Commissioner of Police M Sudarshan yesterday after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the high court recently. He presented himself for interrogation in response to a notice and after questioning he was arrested, the police said. He was produced before a local court which remanded him to judicial custody till August 24, they said. "Sanjay has been accused by 12 girls of sexual harassment and indecent behaviour on the college premises and other places," Sudarshan told PTI. Earlier this month, 12 BSc students of the college complained to state Home Minister Nayini Narsimha Reddy that Sanjay had harassed them and misbehaved with them. Jailed Sharif appears in Pak court in remaining 2 graft cases against him

Pakistan's jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif today appeared before an accountability court hearing two graft cases against him and his family, but the proceeding was adjourned till Wednesday following disturbance caused by reports of firing outside the court premises, according to a media report. For the first time since he was jailed on July 13, the 68-year-old PML-N leader appeared before the Islamabad-based court for hearing in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and the Hill Metal Establishment cases. The accountability court Judge Arshad Malik adjourned the hearing and summoned the investigation officer of the cases on August 15. Sharif, along with his daughter Maryam, 44 and his son-in-law Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar, 54, are already serving jail terms of 10-years, seven years and one year respectively in the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, after an accountability court convicted them on July 6 over the family's ownership of four luxury flats in London. Patna shelter home deaths: 4 persons booked, 2 of them held

The manager and secretary of the NGO, which ran the shelter home for mentally-challenged women where two inmates died under mysterious circumstances, have been arrested, police said today. The shelter home is located in the Nepali Nagar locality under the Rajiv Nagar police station area of the capital city. An FIR was registered late last night against four persons. Among them, Chirantan Kumar and Manisha Dayal, manager and secretary of the NGO 'Anumaya', respectively, were arrested, Station House Officer (SHO) of the Rajiv Nagar police station Rohan Kumar said. The other two accused -- a doctor and an auxiliary nurse midwife attached to the shelter home -- have been absconding since the deaths were reported, he said. Bangladeshi tribunal sentences five to death for 1971 war crimes

Five hardline Islamists were sentenced to death today by a special Bangladeshi tribunal for committing crimes against humanity and siding with the Pakistani troops in carrying out a genocide in a village during the Liberation War in 1971. A three-member panel of Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal led by Justice Shahinur Islam handed down the capital punishment to the five men for raping at least 15 women of Itabaria village of Patuakhali during the Liberation War. They were also sentenced to death for killing 17 people, vandalism, arson, abduction, confinement and torture in the same village in 1971. The judges said the convicts had used rape as a weapon and that their victims had to live with the repercussions of those attacks for the rest of their lives. "These women are our true war heroes. Calcutta HC judges pay final respects to Somnath Chatterjee

Judges of the Calcutta High Court led by Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya paid their last respects to Somnath Chatterjee, whose body was brought to the court premises where he practised for several years as a barrister. The Bar Library Club, of which he was a member, the Bar Association and many lawyers also paid floral tributes to the departed former speaker of the Lok Sabha. Apart from the chief justice, justices Debasish Kargupta, Joymalyo Bagchi, Dipankar Dutta and Arijit Banerjee were among the judges who laid wreaths on the body of Chatterjee. Charge sheet filed in CS Anshu Prakash assault case

The Delhi Police today filed its charge sheet before a court here in connection with the alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash in February. The final report was filed before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal who put up the matter for consideration on August 25. The Delhi Police had on May 18 questioned Kejriwal for over three hours in connection with the alleged assault on Prakash. Prakash was allegedly assaulted during a meeting at Kejriwal's official residence on February 19. The police said the chief minister was present when the alleged assault took place. Police have already questioned 11 AAP MLAs present at the chief minister's residence for the meeting. Two of the party MLAs -- Amantullah Khan and Prakash Jarwal --were arrested in the case. The alleged assault on the chief secretary had triggered a bitter tussle between the Delhi government and its bureaucrats.

Two overground workers of militants arrested in J-K

Two overground workers (OGWs) of militants have been arrested for a failed rifle snatching bid from a bank guard in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. On 10 August, two persons barged inside the Jammu and Kashmir Bank branch at Khrew in the south Kashmir district and attacked bank guard Mumtaz Ahmad with pepper spray and a sharp-edged weapon in an attempt to snatch his 12-bore rifle, a police spokesman said. He said Ahmad successfully foiled the bid to snatch his rifle but suffered injuries, following which he was rushed to Khrew hospital. The accused persons fled the spot, the spokesman said. A case under relevant sections was registered and the investigation was initiated, he said. During the course of investigation, the involvement of two OGWs, Yasir Ahmad Wani a resident of Babapora and Yawar Sultan a resident of Shar Shali Khrew, surfaced in the commission of crime, the spokesman said. He said both were subsequently arrested and the case is being probed.

Two held on charges of rape in Kathua dist

Two persons have been arrested for allegedly raping a girl in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. On August 9, three men from Salalpur Marheen village raped a girl in Chabe Chak area of Rajbagh. The survivor's family registered a police complaint. The police arrested two of the accused yesterday and a search is going on for the third suspect, said an official from Rajbagh police station. The arrested were identified as Kulvinder Kumar alais Nanku, who is the main accused, and Ganesh. In a second incident in Rajouri district, police booked two persons -- Rafiq and Yousef -- for alleged raping a girl in Manjakote area of the district yesterday, the police said. A complaint was filed by the girl's family. A manhunt has been launched to nab the accused.

Hapur lynching case: SC directs police to ensure protection to witnesses

The Supreme Court on Monday directed Meerut Inspector General of Police to ensure protection to the witnesses in the Hapur lynching case.The apex court also asked him to submit a report on the entire incident. The matter is now fixed for further hearing on August 28.The top court was hearing the plea of a survivor in the case, who is seeking a court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the matter.Besides seeking SIT probe, the petitioner also sought transfer of case and subsequent trial outside Uttar Pradesh amid allegations that the police have not recorded his statement. Three killed, two injured in group clash in Gujarat

Three people, including a father-son duo, were killed and two others injured in a clash between two groups over a land dispute in Gujarat's Morbi district, police said today. Twelve people have been arrested in connection with the incident, they said. A group, led by one Dhanji Dabhi and his accomplices, attacked members of another group late last night with sharp weapons on Leelapur Road, around 90 km from Rajkot, Morbi taluka's police sub-inspector S A Gohil said. Three members of the other group were seriously injured in the attack, he said. "They were rushed to the Morbi Civil Hospital where doctors declared them dead," he said. Pakistani couple arrested for kissing, cuddling in Islamabad

A young Pakistani couple have been arrested for allegedly kissing and cuddling in a car here, a media report said today. The couple, aged around 18-19 years, have been booked for 'obscene acts', an offence punishable with imprisonment for up to three months, or with fine, or both, The Express Tribune reported. Investigating officer Zulfiqar Ahmed said that police received a complaint yesterday that the couple were "kissing and cuddling" in a car parked in Islamabad's city centre. Kerala sexual abuse case: Two more priests surrender

Two more Kerala priests, accused of sexually abusing a woman, surrendered before police today, officials said. Fr Abraham Varghese alias Sony surrendered before a court at Thiruvalla while Fr Jaise K George at the crime branch office in Kollam this morning, the police said. The clergymen surrendered after the Supreme Court cancelled their interim protection from the arrest and asked them to surrender by today. SC issues notice to UP govt in Hapur lynching case

The Supreme Court today directed the Meerut inspector general of police (IGP) to investigate the alleged Hapur lynching case, in which one person was killed and another brutally assaulted by a mob on the pretext they were involved in cow-slaughter, and file a report within two weeks. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on the plea filed by Samiuddin, who was allegedly brutally assaulted by the mob in the incident, seeking an independent SIT probe into the incident and transfer of investigation and the subsequent trial outside the state.
