Three arrested with huge cache of arms in WB

An arms racket was busted near here today with the seizure of a huge cache of weapons and ammunitions and the arrest of three men, police said. The gang members were crossing the Matla Bridge in South 24 Parganas district with the arms hoard when their car was intercepted by police, a senior officer said. Twelve one-shotter pipe guns, nine live ammunitions and four mobile phones were seized from their possession, he told reporters here. "Acting on a tip-off, officers from Canning police station and a special protection force from Baruipur in the district intercepted the gang and seized the arms from their custody. The gang was headed to Basanti area of the district from Jalangi in Murshidabad, around 300km away," he stated. Maha ATS gets custody of right-wing Hindu outfit members

A sessions court here today remanded three persons, arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for allegedly possessing crude bombs and weapons, in the agency's custody till August 18. Additional sessions Judge Sameer Adkar remanded the three accused -- Vaibhav Raut, Sharad Kalaskar and Sudhanwa Gondhalekar -- in ATS custody till August 18. The accused were reportedly arrested late yesterday night in an ATS operation conducted in Bhandar Aali area of Nallasopara West in neighbouring Palghar district. The accused were booked under provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Penal Code. Benzema's blackmail case heads for possible final hearing

The Paris Appeal Court will re-examine the case against Real Madrid star Karim Benzema for his alleged role in the blackmail of fellow international Mathieu Valbuena on October 4, sources told AFP today. The hearing has been awaited since July 2017 when France's highest court, the Court of Cassation, annulled a Versailles Court of Appeal decision to send Benzema to trial for allegedly attempting to blackmail Valbuena over a sex tape and ordered the Paris court to review the original ruling. The affair began in June 2015 when Valbuena received a call from a blackmailer who threatened to release an intimate video. Valbuena contacted the police who assigned an undercover officer to the case. Investigators accused Benzema of acting as an intermediary between the presumed blackmailers and Lyon midfielder Valbuena. Two Romanians arrested in Madhya Pradesh for ATM fraud

Two Romanian nationals were arrested here in Madhya Pradesh in connection with an alleged ATM fraud in various cities of the country, police said today. The duo, Adrian Liviu (30) and Cornel Constantine (27), was arrested yesterday, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Amrendra Singh. "They were arrested on the basis of inputs provided by the Kolkata Police," he said. The two were handed over to a Kolkata Police team which has taken them to West Bengal, Singh said. Cases related to the fraud were reported from various cities, including Kolkata, where an FIR has been lodged. ED seizes properties of Maoist leader in Bihar

The Enforcement Directorate today seized assets worth Rs 30 lakh belonging to Maoist leader Sandeep Yadav alias Vijay Yadav alias Rupesh here in connection with a money laundering case, an ED official said. Sandeep Yadav is a central committee member of the CPI (Maoist) and a resident of Lutua village under the jurisdiction of Lutua police station of Gaya district. The Maoist leader is an absconder in more than 100 cases lodged in different police stations of various states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and Chhattisgarh for his involvement in naxal related incidents. SC to examine laws on media reporting in sexual assault cases

The Supreme Court today said it would examine the provisions of law which provide curbs and balances for media in reporting incidents of sexual assault, including that of minors, after it was complained that there have been "regular violation" of such provisions. The apex court was told that in today's world, parallel media trials were going on even when proceedings of cases were pending before the court of law, like in the recent Kathua gangrape-murder case. A bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur was informed by senior advocate Indira Jaising, who is assisting the court as an amicus curiae, that disclosing the identity of a victim of sexual assault infringes the privacy of that person and it should not be allowed. She referred to the provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which deals with disclosure of identity of victims of such offences and procedure to be followed by the media in reporting these cases, and said ..

SC to lay norms, terms as 'grave' incidents of rioting, vandalism

The Supreme Court today termed as "grave" the rising incidents of rioting and vandalism of properties during protests across the country and said that it will not wait for the government to amend the law. The observation came when Attorney General K K Venugopal told the bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra that riots and protests are happening almost every week in one or other part of the country and referred to recent violent incidents involving kanwariyas. Kejriwal accuses Centre increase of crimes against women

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today accused the Centre and Lt Governor Anil Baijal for not taking effective steps to curb crime against women. His remark comes in the wake of the alleged rape of a six-year-old girl at a NDMC-run school here. Blaming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Baijal for rise in such crimes, he said it was a "serious issue". "In the last few years, cases of crimes have been increased in Delhi. Also, cases of crimes against women have been increased, which is a serious issue," he said. "Law and order comes under PM, Union Home Minister and LG in Delhi, but effective steps have not been taken," the Delhi chief minister said. He said in view of increase in crimes against women, the Delhi government has decided to install CCTV cameras across the city. This will ensure deterrence, Kejriwal said. A girl died and a boy sustained critical injuries after their vehicle fell into a gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Shimla district today, police said. Village 'elders' let go man who raped minor with Rs 2.5lk fine

A man who allegedly impregnated a minor girl, a farm worker, after a false promise of marrying her was let off with a Rs 2.5 lakh 'compensation' and externed by a group of elders in a village in Telangana, police said today. After the shocking incident that took place on August 1 came to light, the man and four of the six 'elders' who held the 'mediation meet' at Narayanpet in Mahbubnagar district were arrested yesterday, police said. Police registers case against union min for alleged rape of

Assam Police have registered a case against Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain for allegedly raping and threatening a 24-year old woman in Nagaon district, a senior officer said today. Nagaon Deputy Superintendent of Police (headquarter) Sabita Das said the case was registered against Gohain on August 2 after receiving a complaint at Nagaon police station. Class two student raped in Delhi school

A class two student of a New Delhi Municipal Council school was allegedly raped by an electrician in the institute's premises, police said today. Following the incident, the Delhi Commission For Women and the National Human Rights Commission issued notices to Delhi Police demanding details of the case. The NDMC too has initiated disciplinary action against the school authorities. 'Constable, watchman died in road accident'

A police constable and a watchman, riding a motorcycle on their way to Hardoi near here on official duty, were crushed to death by a speeding truck today, the police said. "Police Constable Vipin Bainsla (25) and watchmen Sumer (42) were going to Hariyali Bazar (in Hardoi district) on duty, when a truck laden with buffaloes hit their motorcycle from behind and crushed them." said Hardoi Superintendent of Police Vipin Mishra. Sumer died on the spot, while Bipin succumbed to his injuries at Shahjahanpur district hospital, the officer said, adding the bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem. Fake websites created using name, logo of WCD Ministry: Govt

Fake websites were created using the name and logo of the Women and Child Development Ministry for duping people with advertisement of vacancies of teachers and other posts, the Lok Sabha was told today. Two such instances had come to the notice, where some perpetrators created fake websites using the name and logo of the ministry and advertised vacancies of teachers and other posts, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi told the Lower House. In both the cases, the applicants were requested to pay examination fee online through the websites, Gandhi said in a written reply. The ministry had lodged an FIR with the Delhi Police under Section 420 of the IPC and Section 66-D of the IT Act. As informed by the Delhi Police, the person involved in one case was arrested and sent to judicial custody.

Nigerian held with cocaine in Delhi Metro

A Nigerian was apprehended by the CISF at a Delhi Metro station for allegedly carrying cocaine, a senior official said today. N C Remigius (25) was intercepted at the Rajiv Chowk station yesterday after a security personnel found some "unusual padding" in his socks during frisking. A total of 12 small sachets, containing about 11 grams of drugs suspected to be cocaine, was recovered from the Nigerian man along with Rs 78,680 in cash and three mobile phones. The man, who came to India on a business visa in May this year, has been handed over by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to the police. He was booked under anti-narcotics charges and arrested, the official said. The man was living in Uttam Nagar area here, he added.

SC seeks response of UP govt on plea of jailed Bhim army chief Chandrashekhar

The Supreme Court today sought a response from the Uttar Pradesh government on a plea filed by jailed Dalit leader and Bhim Army founder Chandrashekhar Azad challenging his detention under stringent provisions of the National Security Act (NSA). NCLAT Upholds Electrosteel Steels Sale To Vedanta

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal today upheld the sale of Electrosteel Steel Ltd to Vedanta Ltd, saying the mining baron Anil Agarwal-led firm was eligible to bid for the debt-laden firm. It rejected the contention of Renaissance Steel, a rival bidder for Electrosteel, that Vedanta was ineligible to bid under Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code as one of connected group firm - KCM in Zambia, had been found guilty of violating certain environmental laws, punishable with two or more years of imprisonment. In its order, the appellate tribunal said that although Vedanta Resources PLC was convicted for the offence punishable under Section 91(1) of Zambia Act, which has provision for a fine or imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or both, no directors was convicted for it. NDMC suspends 4 officials, terminates JE over rape of class 2 student

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) today suspended four officials, including the headmistress of the school where a class 2 student was allegedly raped by an electrician. The officials suspended are Ram Ashray, the accused electrician who was arrested yesterday, headmistress Santosh Rawat, assistant engineer (Electric Department) Tulsi Ram and assistant teacher Shikha. While the civic body has initiated disciplinary proceedings against them, it has also terminated the contract of junior engineer Saurabh Bisht, who was the accused's supervisor.
