Two residents of Punjab were arrested here today and 14 kg of poppy was recovered from them, the police said. Two people roaming under suspicious circumstances in Digiana area here were intercepted and subjected to search which led to the recovery of 6 kgs and 8 kg of poppy from them, a police officer said. The accused have been identified as Lukhvinder Singh and Rinku Singh, he added. A case has been registered against the duo, the police officer said.
The Supreme Court today termed as "manifestly arbitrary" a penal provision which required a woman to have her husband's consent to indulge in adultery with another married man and said it amounted to treating women as "chattel". A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, however, drew the distinction between adultery as a criminal offence and as a civil wrong which has been used as a ground for seeking divorce in matrimonial disputes. The apex court, which was hearing a petition challenging the constitutional validity of Section 497 (adultery) of the IPC, said, "As far as criminalisation or decriminalisation of adultery as an offence is concerned, it is in one compartment. Adultery cannot cease to be a ground for seeking divorce by estranged couple in a court of law." Unidentified miscreants stole gold and silver ornaments from a temple here, police said today. Superintendent of Police, West Tripura, Ajit Pratap Singh said the theft at the Laxmi Narayan Bari Temple here came to light when the priests opened the temple today. "We got the information at around 7.30 am that miscreants stole ornaments of Laxmi Narayan Bari Temple. We rushed there with our team and deployed dog squad, finger print specialists and other experts to check the crime scene," Singh said. The SP said preliminary investigation suggested that four golden crowns, one golden flute and two bangles were missing, adding that a separate list of silver jewellery that was stolen was also being prepared. Concerned over a large number of railway passengers often falling prey to thieves, the Centre has asked all state governments to ensure proactive registration of FIRs and investigation of such cases so that it would act as a deterrent for criminals. In a communication to chief secretaries of states and administrators of union territories, the Home Ministry said offences against railway passengers like theft, robbery are registered and investigated by the Government Railway Police (GRP) of states responsible for prevention, detection and investigation of such crimes. It is necessary that complaints made by railway passengers for criminal offences are duly registered under the relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and investigated by the GRP in order to recover property and punish culprits. The Delhi High Court today extended till September 17 the interim protection from arrest to the in-laws of a flight attendant, who had allegedly committed suicide in the national capital last month. While extending the relief, Justice Mukta Gupta asked the Crime Branch, which has taken over the investigation in the case, to file a status report in three weeks. The court listed the matter for further hearing on September 17. Advocate Ishkaran Singh Bhandari, appearing for the victim's parents, said they welcomed the transfer of the probe in the case to the Crime Branch of Delhi Police. An Indian and two other foreign nationals, working in Kabul, were killed on Thursday by unknown gunmen.The three people, including a Malaysian and a Macedonian national, were allegedly kidnapped early in the day. Their bodies were later found in Kabul's PD9 area, reported TOLO News.As per reports, the victim were on their way to work in the Pul-e-Charkhi area in PD9 in Kabul city, when they were kidnapped.The Police said that it appears four kidnappers abducted the three people and then took them to the remote district in a car at about 10.30am. The blood-stained body of a 52-year-old man, with his skull crushed, was found in the forest near the Andheri Bridge here this morning, police said. The body was found in the R K Puram police station area. The victim's mobile phone and spectacles were scattered nearby, they said. A case of murder was lodged against unidentified accused and an investigation initiated in this connection, officials said. The victim was identified as Ayub Khan, a resident of Bundi district, R K Puram police station Circle In-charge Rajendra Meena said, adding that the skull was crushed with a heavy stone. Three police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were injured when a group of people including women, assaulted them inside a police station in Nellore district, police said today. Twelve people, including five women, have been arrested in connection with the incident, they said. Police said a group of 30 people, allegedly in an inebriated state, threw stones at the Rapur police station last night, barged into it and thrashed the personnel. They accused them of harassing residents of their locality even as the SI was dragged outside the station and beaten with stones, police said. According to police, following a complaint by a person that his wife was verbally abused, police last evening summoned a resident for questioning and he came to the station along with three others. A Class 11 student of a prestigious school in Ajmer has claimed that he was allegedly sodomised by his seniors last month, police said today. An FIR was lodged under sections of the POCSO Act against four people at the Alwar gate police station based on a complaint filed by the victim's father on July 30, they said. "We have examined CCTV footage of the school but the allegation that he was thrashed and dragged could not be verified. The probe on the allegation of sodomy is underway," a senior police officer said. The alleged assault on the boy, from Uttar Pradesh, took place on July 15, he said. Pakistan's Supreme Court today sentenced a senior leader of the jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's PML-N party for contempt of court, disqualifying him from holding public office for five years, months after he made anti-judiciary remarks. The Supreme Court had initiated contempt proceedings against the fire-brand Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Tallal Chaudhry for his "derogatory and contemptuous speeches/statements" against the judiciary during a rally in January. A three-judge bench, headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmad, sentenced Chaudhry till the rising of the court and also imposed a fine of Rs 100,000. The apex court found the former state interior minister guilty of violating Article 204 of the Constitution, Dawn newspaper reported. As a result of his conviction, Chaudhry is ineligible to contest elections for the next five years, it said. Upset over his wife's alleged extramarital relation, an NRI burned himself, his wife and their two children alive at their house in Punjab, police said today. Kulwinder Singh (35), who was living in Jordan, was angry after coming across a sleazy video of his wife, they said. He came to his native village Kalasingia last night and poured petrol on himself, his wife and their two minor children and set everyone on fire, they said. Singh, along with his two children Abhi (5) and Sonal (8) died on the spot while his wife received more than 80 per cent burn injuries. She was rushed to a hospital where she died, they said.
