A deputy chief veterinary officer was allegedly denied drinking water in Uttar Pradesh's Kaushambi district because of her Dalit identity, officials said today. The incident happened yesterday in Ambawa Poorab village in Manjhanpur block, 167 km from Lucknow.The officer, Dr Seema, said today that she had gone to the village on the directions of the district panchayat raj officer to review developmental works. As there was no water in her bottle, Seema had asked the village pradhan, Shiv Sampat Pasi, and village development officer, Ravi Dutt Mishra, for water. She alleged that both of them refused to give her water as she was a Dalit. She added that when she sought water from the villagers, the two allegedly gestured them not to give water to her. When contacted, District Magistrate Manish Verma said, "We have taken cognizance of the incident after the officer lodged a written complaint. The Bombay High Court issued today a notice to Mumbai municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta on a petition alleging that he made some uncharitable remarks about Right to Information (RTI) activists. A bench of Justices R M Borde and V M Deshpande asked Mehta to submit his reply on the petition filed by Kamlakar Shenoy, an activist, within two weeks. The petition said that following the fire at Kamala Mills compound last December which claimed 14 lives, Mehta issued a circular, which contained objectionable remarks about RTI activists in the city. The circular, which listed steps taken by the corporation against unauthorised alterations in the wake of the fire tragedy, also directed officials to make a list of RTI activists who regularly file queries about unauthorised constructions with ulterior motives. The petition said Mehta mentioned in interviews to newspapers and news channels that he had asked deputy municipal commissioners to prepare a list of "professional complainants" who seek .
Tension erupted in Hasanpura area of the city over an interfaith marriage today, after the woman's relatives hurled stones at her husband's home, police said. The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) today restored the ownership of iconic Jai Mahal hotel in favour of grandchildren of late Maharani Gayatri Devi. Allowing the petition of Gayatrai Devi's grandchildren, a Delhi bench of NCLT set aside the resolution of the extraordinary general meeting of the company held in March 1999 and March 2001 regarding appointments on board and dilution of their stake. "All the resolutions which has been passed in the meeting of the board of director or in EGM or AGM . are hereby set aside," said NCLT bench of R Vardharajan. Former chief election commissioner S Y Quraishi today suggested that people with "heinous" criminal cases against them should be debarred from fighting elections. Quraishi, who was the CEC from 2010-12, said it was high time that long-pending electoral reforms were carried out in the country. There were 40 pending proposals for electoral reforms, he said while speaking during a panel discussion at the launch of Congress leader and former Union minister M Veerappa Moily's book 'The Wheel of Justice'. Two men were arrested today for allegedly duping as many as 1,800 people of Rs 30 crore by forming a fake crypto-currency company here, police said. Acting on a complaint by around 50 investors, Gaurav Aneja, a native of Sahibabad city in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad district, and Nelson Lobo from Mumbai were nabbed in Vasundhara area, said Akash Tomar, superintendent of police (city). They confessed that they had formed a fake US-based crypto-currency company, Ripple Future, which promised depositors to triple their deposits in 250 days. They were also running daily-and-weekly payment schemes, Tomar said. Such companies are banned in India. The accused had allegedly cheated around 1,800 investors of 30 crore rupees. One accomplice is still at large, the SP said. The data base of the company has been seized to probe the case. Three people including a Nigerian national were arrested today from west Delhi's Uttam Nagar and over five kilogram high-grade heroin was seized from them, the police said. A total of 5.250 kg of high-grade heroin worth Rs 21 crore in the international market has been recovered from the trio, they said. The three smuggled heroin to Haryana, Punjab and Delhi-NCR from Afghanistan, the police said. A case has been registered by the police.
A case of medical negligence was registered against a prominent private hospital in the city following the direction from a local court here, police said today. The case was registered against Fortis Hospital under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including murder, Sub-Inspector posted at the Jawahar Circle police station, Munshi Lal Sharma said. The court directed police to register an FIR in the death of 53-year-old Praveen Tiwari. He died at the hospital in May last year, he said. Sharma said earlier hospital authorities did not cooperate in the investigation. Praveen's family members had lodged a complaint, but had to move court last month to get an FIR registered in the matter. "My father was admitted at the hospital in January last year owing to cardiac problem. He was admitted for over four months and he died on May 21. Yesterday, the CBI carried out a raid following inputs and allegedly found advocate Neeraj Walia paying Rs 2 lakh as bribe to SHO Neeraj Kumar on behalf of Unitech Ltd. Kumar was placed under suspension yesterday and an inquiry was ordered against him. On the basis of the inquiry, he was dismissed from service today, a senior police officer said. It is alleged that the Saket district court had referred 47 cases related to Unitech to the Saket police station for a probe. A local court today sentenced a man to death for raping and murdering a 58-year-old school teacher in Hojai district. Another accused in the case was awarded rigourous imprisonment for life and five years under different sections of the IPC. The sentences will run concurrently. The two accused, Moinul Haque (41) and Salimuddin (32), were convicted by a fast track court on July 24 for raping and strangulating the headmistress of a school in Hojai in May last year before dumping her body in river Kopili. Pakistan's top anti-graft body today decided to file a corruption case against former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gillani and several former top officials of the Ministry of Information Technology. The decision was taken during a meeting of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) at its headquarters in Islamabad. Gillani and others are accused of misusing their authority to illegally grant an advertising contract in contravention of the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules, Dawn reported. The act is reported to have cost the national treasury Rs 129.07 million. Gillani served as 19th prime minister from March 25, 2008 until his disqualification and ouster by the Supreme Court on April 26, 2012. The Tamil Nadu government has informed the Madras High Court that video conferencing facilities would be provided in 233 court complexes in the 32 districts of the state. In an affidavit filed before Justice T Raja, the Home Department said Rs 22.83 crore had been allocated for procurement of 233 video conferencing equipment and accessories for this purpose in two phases. This had been done as per the directions of the Supreme Court, it added. The affidavit was filed in response to a petition by H Ramakrishnan seeking a direction to the government for implementation of the March 9, 2017, order of the Supreme Court to issue suitable instructions to all district courts to use video conferencing for recording evidence. The petitioner, residing in London, had moved the court saying he was unable to attend court proceedings in Cuddalore district and seeking video conferencing facility for recording his depositions.
