A Delhi court has taken cognisance of a charge sheet filed by the ED against Gujarat-based pharma firm Sterling Biotech Limited's director Rajbhushan Omprakash Dixit in a bank loan fraud case of over Rs 5,000 crore. Additional Sessions Judge Satish Arora took cognisance of the final report filed by the Enforcement Directorate's special public prosector Nitesh Rana and summoned the accused for August 8, the next date of hearing. The court noted that Dixit was already out on bail in the money laundering case and directed him to appear on next date of hearing. In the charge sheet, the ED has accused the company of taking loans of over Rs 5,000 crore from a consortium led by Andhra Bank which had turned into non-performing assets. A 45-year-old builder was today shot dead allegedly by four bike-borne assailants in outer Delhi's Ranhola, the police said. The deceased, identified as Rajendra Goyal, was a resident of Uttam Nagar, they said. The incident took place at 9:15 am, infront of Kanak Banquet Hall in Ranhola's Vikas Nagar, where Goyal had come to supervise the construction work of a banquet hall, a senior officer said. Goyal had parked his vehicle and was in the driver's seat when four men came on two motorcycles and shot at him. He sustained five bullet injuries in his chest, he said. The victim was shifted to the Deen Dayal Upadhayay Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, the officer said.
The Justice Srikrishna panel on data protection has recommended that the Aadhaar Act be amended "significantly" to bolster privacy safeguards and mooted that only public authorities approved by the UIDAI or entities mandated by law be given the right to request for identity authentication. The panel -- whose views on Aadhaar are captured in its 213-page report, but are not part of the draft Personal Data Protection Bill, also submitted by it to the government yesterday -- seeks greater autonomy, both functional and financial, for the Aadhaar-issuing body. The panel asserted that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) should not only be autonomous in its decision-making, functioning independently of the user agencies in the government, but also be vested with powers akin to a traditional regulator for enforcement actions. The sentence review board (SRB) of the Delhi government has postponed the decision on release of Jessica Lal murder convict Manu Sharma lodged in the Tihar jail. A meeting of the board held yesterday also deferred several other release applications, including that of Tandoor murder case convict Sushil Sharma, officials said. The applications of release were deferred as the opinion of the board members were divided on it, a member of the board said. The panel, chaired by Delhi Home minister, comprises principal secretary (Home), principal secretary (law), director general (prisons), joint commissioner of police (crime), chief probation officer and a district judge. An earlier meeting of the board in April was postponed amid surfacing of a letter by Sabrina Lal, sister of Jessica, in which she had apprised the Tihar jail authorities that she had no objection over release of Manu Sharma. Jessica was shot dead in a south Delhi restaurant by Manu Sharma in 1999.
No rape charges will be filed against actor Ed Westwick due to insufficient evidence, Los Angeles County prosecutors said. Westwick, best known for his role on "Gossip Girl," was accused in November of raping two women and sexually assaulting a third in 2014. Actor Kristina Cohen made the first allegation in a post on Facebook, writing that Westwick held her down and raped her at his home in West LA. Two more women came forward with their own accounts, actress Aurelie Wynn and Rachel Eck. In a memo obtained by Variety, prosecutors said they did not have enough evidence to pursue charges. Shaktipada Sardar (45), the secretary of BJP Mandal committee of Mandira Bazar-Dhanurhat area was returning home last night when miscreants attacked him with sharp weapon and left him bleeding on the road, they said. The local people spotted Sardar lying on the road and rushed him to Diamond Harbour Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, the hospital referred him to a hospital in Kolkata. However, Sardar died while being taken to a hospital in Kolkata, they said. Police said they have started an investigation into the matter. The BJP alleged that Sardar was killed by Trinamool Congress goons. The Trinamool Congress has denied the BJP allegations.
Three persons, including a woman and her paramour, were arrested for allegedly killing her husband in Virar in neighbouring Palghar district, and trying to dispose of his body, police said today. The trio was arrested yesterday by the Palghar district rural police. One more accused is on the run. According to police, the victim, Yogesh Raut (32), suspected the fidelity of his 29-year-old wife Ashwini. "The couple, residents of Virar west, used to frequently quarrel over the issue. Fed up, Ashwini hatched a conspiracy to eliminate her husband. She sought help of her paramour Raj Arjun and two others to kill him," official of Palghar district police said. The Maharashtra government justified its decision to remove a special public prosecutor from Khwaja Yunus custodial death case, for seeking to arraign four policemen as accused in it, and told the Bombay High Court that it was not trying to protect the police officials. The government, through a notification in April this year cancelled advocate Deepak Mirajkar's appointment as special public prosecutor in the case. The government's decision came after Mirajkar filed an application before a sessions court, which is presently conducting the trial in the case, seeking summons to be issued against retired police officer Praful Bhosale and three other policemen and make them face trial on murder charges. Thirty-six cows were found dead in a cow shelter in Ghumanhera village near Dwarka on Friday.Local police, who visited the said Gaushala, noted that there were about 1400 sheltered in the gaushala, out of which 36 were found dead.A letter was then sent to Kuldeep Singh Gangar, Special Development Commissioner, for the constitution of a team of veterinary doctors for inspection and further postmortem to establish the cause of death.A team of doctors from the veterinary hospital of Kakrola, Goyla Dairy, Najagarh, Dichaun Kalan, Chhawla and Nangli Dairy reached the Gaushala.The inquiry into the cause of death of all the cows is being conducted.The Gaushala is run by Acharya Sushil Gosadan Trust at village Ghumanhera in Chhawla area.The land for the 20-acre gaushala was allotted in the year 1995.Legal action will be taken in accordance with the prevalent laws, once the report is submitted.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) attached foreign currency worth USD 8000 and Nepalese Rupees worth 4067, which was recovered from Mohd. A man accused of stealing a tractor before leading Denver police on a slow-speed chase through the city also is charged with biting and choking a police dog and stealing two other cars. Denver District Attorney Beth McCann on Thursday filed 23 charges against 37-year-old Thomas Busch connected to the July 20 incident, including 10 felony-level charges. It's not clear if Busch has an attorney. The charges include three counts of aggravated motor vehicle theft, three counts of failure to report an accident and one count of cruelty to a certified police working dog. Authorities say Busch stole a car, then a tow truck before taking the tractor from a city water department facility. A police squad car eventually rammed the tractor's front end in downtown Denver, stopping it.
A court here framed charges today against Mohsin Raza alias Arshad, a minister in the BJP-led government in Uttar Pradesh, in connection with a 29-year-old road rage case. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Nirbhay Prakash also framed charges against co-accused Akbar and fixed August 4 for the recording of evidence of the prosecution witnesses. The accused were present in the court at the time of framing of charges. A truck driver, Lallan, had lodged an FIR at the Wazirganj police station on August 4, 1989, alleging that the two accused had suddenly come in front of his truck and though no one was hurt, they had stopped his vehicle and assaulted and abused him. The police had filed a chargesheet against the duo on August 4, 1990 under sections 323, 336, 504 and 506 of the IPC. The court could not frame charges all these years as the accused were not appearing before it.
A 32-year-old man involved in Munirka human trafficking case where 16 Nepali women were rescued has been arrested, the police said today. The accused, identified as Naushad, was arrested from Munirka and a car used in commission of crime has been seized, they added. On interrogation, the accused accepted his role in the trafficking network. In his statement to the police, Naushad said he used to ferry girls between airports, bus stands, railway stations. His main task, besides transportation, was to ensure secrecy of the movement, said Devender Arya, Deputy Commissioner of Police, (southwest) Delhi. The accused has also given leads to the police following which a police team has been sent to Uttar Pradesh to nab the remaining accused persons, he said. A woman lodged a police complaint here today against her husband, accusing him of raping her and forcing her into unnatural sex, police said. The Gurgaon police lodged an FIR against her husband under IPC sections 376(2)(n), 377, 34, 406, 495 and 506 at a women's police station and also booked her father-in-law in this connection. "We have registered an FIR under the relevant IPC sections on the statement of the victim and are probing the matter. A man was arrested for allegedly killing a woman in Shahdara's Dilshad Garden here, the police said today. Sunny was arrested from Timarpur and during interrogation he told the police that he was in intoxicated state at one Usha's residence when Nishti, the victim, had visited her. Sunny was carrying a weapon and Nitshti didn't believe it was real. To prove himself right, he opened fire and in the process accidently shot her in stomach, the police said. The Madras High Court today encountered a bizarre petition by a 57-year old man from Madurai who sought anticipatory bail stating that he was among those who had repeatedly raped a minor girl here, in connection with which 17 people had already been arrested. Kamaraj, a resident of Pankajam Colony in Madurai, in his petition claimed that he had sexually assaulted the girl several times under the influence of alcohol after sedating her whenever he visited Chennai.
