Special Judge (SC/ST court) G P Shirsat, in an order passed two days back, also imposed a fine of Rs 8,000 on each convict from Kopar Khairane of Navi Mumbai. The court, however, acquitted two women, giving them benefit of doubt. Those awarded punishment are: Sandip Shrikant Dhonde (33), Suresh Baban Sanas (49), Rajendra Baban Bhor (51), Vilas Baban Sanas (46), Ratnakar Rambhau Aaute (47) and Kumar Vasant Gole (31). They were held guilty under the Indian Penal Code Sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and a section of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. A woman in her late 30s was allegedly shot dead by a man in Shahdara's Dilshad Garden, the police said today. Yesterday, the police were informed by the Swami Dayanand Hospital authorities that a woman was brought there by a group of three-four men who alleged that she was suffering from some health issue. A medical examination was conducted but the woman died in the hospital. Later, during examination, injury marks were found on her stomach, said a senior police officer and the body was sent for postmortem. During investigation, police found that the deceased, Nishti, was known to one Usha. Police said Usha runs a boutique at her residence in Dilshad Garden and Nishti had gone to her house where she was allegedly shot at by one Sunny. The accused has been absconding since the incident, the officer said.
The Delhi Police has registered a case in connection with the recovery of a foetus from a lavatory of an AirAsia plane after it landed here from Guwahati yesterday, a senior police officer said. A postmortem was conducted on the foetus today to determine its gestational age, he said. When an alarm was raised by the cabin crew about the discovery yesterday, a 19-year-old taekwondo player had admitted that she had lost the foetus. The woman was sent for medical examination, but she refused to undergo tests. The woman claimed she was not aware of her pregnancy and even her brother-in-law said her family was not aware she was pregnant. A suspended junior bureaucrat has been arrested for his alleged role in the arson attack at the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) building earlier this month, police said. Meghalaya Civil Service (MCS) officer G H Passah, who was identified as the main accused of the attack, was held after he surrendered at a police station, they said. "He (Passah) surrendered along with his lawyers and we have arrested him," Director General of Police S B Singh told PTI. Passah was today produced in a local court here where he was remanded to seven days custody. The National Human Rights Commission today sent a notice to the Rajasthan government over the death of a 28-year-old man in Alwar district after he was allegedly thrashed by a mob on the suspicion cow-smuggling. The national human rights commission said it has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that on July 20, Rakbar Khan, from Haryana's Mewat district, was attacked by a group of 8-10 cow vigilantes in Alwar and succumbed to injuries a few hours later. "The cow vigilantes have, reportedly, alleged that the victim died in police custody and not because of mob violence as claimed by the authorities. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) busted a foreign currency smuggling racket at Mumbai International Airport by arresting eight persons who had concealed USD 410,000 (about Rs 2.75 crore) in laptop bags, officials said today. They claimed that the foreign currency smuggling racket was one of the largest ever busted by the agency in recent times. An official said that the interrogation of the accused had revealed that these persons had made over 100 trips in the past one year and had managed to smuggle over Rs 50 crore in foreign currency out of the country. "In an overnight operation at Terminal-2 of the Mumbai International Airport, following a tip-off received from abroad, four passengers were intercepted as they were about to board two flights headed to Bangkok and Dubai," the official informed. The Orissa High Court today rejected the pleas of convicted IAS officer Vinod Kumar and three others challenging the order passed against them by a vigilance court. Justice J P Dash ordered the four to appear before the vigilance court on August 4 when their quantum of punishment would be pronounced. The high court, however, granted some relief to the IAS officer by directing vigilance sleuths not to execute the non-bailable warrant issued against Kumar by the vigilance court. In an interim order earlier, the high court had stayed the operation of the vigilance court's order.
