A day after the body of a newborn infant was found on Guwahati-Delhi Air Asia flight, the Delhi police on Thursday registered an FIR in the connection.The FIR has been lodged under section 318 of the Indian Penal code (IPC).The infant was, reportedly, found lifeless and abandoned in one of the plane's lavatories.According to the official statement of the airline, Delhi Police were alerted and a doctor from the medical team at Delhi International Airport confirmed that the baby had been delivered onboard.It further stated that a suspect had been held back by the police for further investigation.

'What is happening in Kerala, priests are becoming accused in rape cases', the Supreme Court wondered today as it asked the state police to file a status report on the investigation done against four clergymen accused of sexually abusing a married woman. The top court also refused to stay the trial of another alleged rape case involving a priest from Kerala. The trial in the case is scheduled to start from August 1. "What is happening in Kerala, priests are becoming accused in rape cases," said a bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan. BJP MP Anurag Thakur today told the Supreme Court that he was willing to contest the FIR lodged against him for alleged irregularities in grant of land on lease for the Dharamshala cricket stadium. His decision came despite the Himachal Pradesh government announcing to take back all "politically motivated" cases, including those against the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA). On April 16, the state government had taken a decision to take back all politically motivated cases. A school van driver, who was allegedly heavily drunk, was arrested by the police here today after he dozed off at the wheel while ferrying children home. Suresh Shiravale (45), the driver, allegedly fell asleep when driving the van this afternoon. There were around 15 children of various ages in the van. Seeing his head resting on the steering wheel of the moving van, the children panicked. Traffic Constable Santosh Bagul heard their screaming when the van was on the service road in Louis Wadi area, said inspector Anil Mangle. Bagul forced the driver to stop and disembark. Another driver was arranged to ferry the children home, the inspector said. Shiravale was found to be drunk. He was arrested under section 185 (drunken driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act, the inspector said, adding that further probe was on.
A septuagenarian was today arrested here for allegedly cheating public to the tune of Rs 13 crore on the pretext of collecting deposits, police said. Based on a complaint, a case was registered against B Hari Krishna (78), Managing Director of Sree Teja Benefit Fund Ltd, under various IPC sections and Telangana State Protection of Depositors of Financial Establishment Act, they said. The accused started the fund in 1993 and collected money in the form of fixed deposits and also illegally obtained gold loans from other banks for the gold deposited by the members and did not return the money deposited, a police release said.

Punjab and Haryana High Court today took cognisance of the incident involving the alleged gangrape of a 22-year-old married woman from Chandigarh at a guest house in Morni in Haryana's Panchkula district. The division bench of Chief Justice Krishna Murari and Justice Arun Palli put the state of Haryana on notice while treating the matter as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). The court directed the Haryana government to submit a status report in the alleged gangrape case in ten days. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today sought to allay fears among people on their names missing from the NRC, saying no one will be treated as a foreigner if his or her name does not appear in the final draft of the state's citizens list. Chairing a high-level security review meeting here, he asked officials to guide people, whose names do not figure in the National Register of Citizens (NRC), through the procedure of claims and objections. "If someone's name does not appear in the complete draft, he or she is not to be considered a foreigner. Public should be clearly explained the process of claims and objections after publication of the NRC," Sonowal was quoted as saying by one of the officials present at the meeting. The chief minister also directed the officials not to refer any case to the Foreigners Tribunal based on the NRC final draft, the official said. A 34-year-old woman police constable was caught on camera shoplifting some items, including chocolate bars from a department store here, police said today. She has been suspended. Her husband, who assaulted two employees of the store for questioning her, has been arrested, police said. The woman, who was in uniform, after going around the store yesterday for some time came to the billing section with just two items. An employee monitoring the CCTV cameras noticed the woman hiding some items in her dress and alerted the cashier, who confronted the constable and asked her to take out the concealed goods and pay for them also. A 17-year-old youth was stabbed to death outside a school in suburban Bhandup today, police said. Sushil Verma, the victim, was attacked with sharp-edged weapons when he came out of the school this afternoon. He was taken to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival, said a police officer. It is suspected that an altercation regarding a girl led to the attack, he said. Three men were detained in connection with the incident, the officer said, adding that some minors too could be involved in the attack. A minor has been detained for allegedly raping a three-year-old girl in Kashimira area of Maharashtra's Thane district, police said today. The incident took place on Sunday, they said, adding that the accused was detained the next day and produced in a court in Thane which sent him to a remand home. The 13-year-old boy, a Class 7 student of a local school, is a neighbour of the victim and had called the child to his home and allegedly raped her there, Kashmiria police station Inspector Vaibhav Shingare said. "The victim's mother had gone out for some work and the child's grandmother allowed her to go to the accused's place as the families knew each other," the official said. When the victim's mother reached the accused's house looking for her, she found the child crying, he said. "The girl narrated the ordeal to her mother who then filed a police complaint. We have detained the boy and further investigations into the case are underway," he said.
Jammu and Kashmir's excise department recovered 500 kg of poppy husk and detained two persons in Kathua district today after foiling a major bid to smuggle the narcotics material out of the state in a truck carrying fruit boxes. Sleuths of the state excise department intercepted a vehicle at Lakhanpur toll post and recovered 500 kg of poppy husk from it, officials said. The narcotics material was hidden under fresh fruit boxes in a bid to smuggle them out of the state, they said, adding that truck had been seized. The driver and the conductor have been detained and investigation was handed over to the police, the officials added.
Cyber police stations and crime cells have been set up in each state for reporting and investigation of cyber crimes, Minister of State for the Women and Child Development Ministry Virendra Kumar informed the Rajya Sabha today. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has also set up cyber forensics training laboratories in north-eastern states and cities such as Mumbai, Pune, Kolkata and Bangalore to train state police officials and judiciary in cyber crime detection and collection, preservation and seizing of electronic evidence and dealing with cyber crime. A jar full of old coins was unearthed by labourers engaged in construction work at Bhairavnath temple in Uttarakhand's Pauri district, officials said today. The pitcher was found when the ground was being dug to construct a gate at the temple in Kathur village of Khirsu block in the district, Gram Pradhan Shravan Thapaliyal said after handing over the jar to the district magistrate here today. The Archaeological Survey of India experts will ascertain the age andvalue of the coins, ASI official Ashish Kumarsaid. However, prima facie the coins appear to be over 100-year-old, he said. A nine-year-old boy was trampled to death, while his mother and infant sister were seriously injured by a wild tusker in Odishas Keonjhar district, police said today. The incident happened yesterday at Khuntakata village under the jurisdiction of Bansapal police station, the police said. The jumbo stormed into the victim's house late last night and trampled the boy to death when his mother was trying to escape with both the children, police said. While the 9-year-old boy was killed on the spot, his mother and five-month-old sister received serious injuries, a police officer said. Parliament today passed a bill aiming at allowing a court to try offences related to cheque bounce expeditiously and direct the drawee to pay a minimum of 20 per cent of the cheque amount as interim compensation. The Negotiable Instruments (Amendment) Bill, 2018, which was passed in the Lok Sabha on July 23, was passed by the Rajya Sabha by a voice vote. Moving the bill for consideration and passage, Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla said presently over 16 lakh cases of cheque bounce are pending in subordinate courts. Moreover, 34,000 such cases have gone to the high courts following appeal. "We have brought the amendments to ensure that people have trust and faith on issuing cheques," the Minister said, adding that 1881 law on negotiable instruments has been amended from time to time. The latest amendments aims to insert Section 143A and Section 148 in the Act to provide that a court trying a cheque bounce offence under Section 138 may order the drawer of
A police constable, who tried to pacify two groups fighting over a minor car accident, was thrashed by them in northeast Delhi's Khajuri Khas area, an official said today. Yesterday, after receiving a call about a quarrel between two groups, a policeman attached with the police control room reached the spot and tried to handle the situation. But, the crowd attacked him. In a video that surfaced on social media, a burqa-clad woman was seen attacking the policeman with slippers for being partial. A special court here today convicted an Income Tax official for demanding a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a tax assessee in 2011 and sentenced him to four years rigorous imprisonment. Daya Shankar, then Income Tax Commissioner (Appeal), was found guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act by special judge M G Deshpande. He was sentenced to four years in jail and also fined Rs 25,000, special public prosecutor Kavita Patil said. According to the prosecution, the complainant, Haresh Bhawnani, had filed an appeal with Commissioner of Income Tax (Appeal) against an assessment order for additional tax liability of Rs 1,41,41,546 for the year 2008-09. The case was presented to Shankar who demanded a bribe of Rs 25 lakh from the complainant to reduce the latter's tax liability to Rs 2.5 lakh. The bribe amount was later reduced to Rs 2 lakh.
