A 35-year-old woman here was allegedly held captive by her husband and in-laws for almost a week, beaten up and attacked with acid and hot oil, police said today. The woman, Kausar, said she married Kasim almost a year ago. In her complaint, she said that she was held hostage on July 9 and beaten up. Her neck was burnt using hot oil, fingers and toes were also attacked with acid. She was kept hungry and thirsty. After this, she was thrown out of the house on July 17." A TV serial producer was today sentenced to seven years of imprisonment by a court here for raping a 31-year-old woman. Mukesh Mishra (33) was found guilty under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 506(II) (criminal intimidation). Additional sessions judge K S Hore today convicted him and awarded seven years' prison term, said additional public prosecutor Ashwini Rayakar. The prosecution examined nine witnesses, she said. The victim worked in the production unit of the Hindi serial "Veera" which was shot in a studio in suburban Powai. According to the victim, on December 12, 2012, Mishra asked her to reach Jogeshwari station, where a bus was supposed to pick up artists. When she reached the spot, Mishra was there. A Gujarat court today sentenced Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel and two of his aides to two years imprisonment in a case of rioting and arson in Visnagar town here in July 2015. Later, Hardik and his two aides - Lalji Patel and A K Patel - were granted bail by the same court. The sentence dashes 25-year-old Hardik's hopes of contesting elections, unless it is suspended or reversed by the higher courts. The court granted bail to Hardik and his aides to allow them to file their appeals in the high court before August 27. If they fail to do so within this time-frame, the trio will have to present themselves before the Visnagar court for the execution of the sentence against them. Sheena Bora murder case accused Indrani Mukerjea's son Mikhail Bora today told the trial court here that he believed that his mother had planned to kill him too. "In August 2015, I came to know that Didi (Sheena) had been murdered by Indrani, Sanjeev Khana and driver (Shyamvar Rai). Then I realised that when I had reached their home (in Worli here, on April 24, 2012) they had already killed Sheena and were planning to murder me," Mikhail said, recording his testimony before Special CBI Judge J C Jagdale. "Had I taken two more pegs (of the drink allegedly offered by his mother) that day, I won't have been alive today," he added. A former policeman was arrested today for allegedly abusing police personnel in Calangute village when they stopped him for not wearing a helmet, an official said. Calangute Police Inspector Jivba Dalvi said the incident occurred when the police personnel were checking vehicles for documents. The personnel stopped Anton Paul Britto (45) who was riding a two-wheeler without a helmet, he said. "The accused started abusing the policeman and obstructed them from doing their duty," Dalvi said. Britto had served as a police constable before he resigned from service. He is also facing an attempt to murder case. Britto has been booked under various sections of the IPC.
Five persons carrying 58 gold bars allegedly smuggled from the Gulf were nabbed today by Crime Branch from suburban Borivli, an official said. He said the gold bars, weighing 6.76 kg, were allegedly smuggled into India by one of the accused, a woman, from Abu Dhabi by evading Customs duty. The officials also recovered cash worth Rs 21.13 lakh from the possession of the accused, he said. The five are identified as Mehboob Ali Shaikh (39), Sajia Shaikh (37), Jaffar Akbar Khan (46), Mahammad Shaikh (30)--all residents of Trombey, and Tabasum Khan( 27), a resident of Malvani near suburban Malad. The official said Tabassum had allegedly smuggled the gold bars from Abhu Dhabi Airport to Pune airport. The other four accused allegedly took the gold bars from Tabassum while she was trying to sell them, he said. All the accused have been handed over to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), zonal unit, he added.
The sixth accused, who was part of a group of youth which allegedly molested a 16-year-old girl and also filmed the act, was arrested here today, police said. "On the complaint lodged by the girl, a case was registered against the accused. One person was arrested today, taking the number of persons arrested (in this connection) to six," circle officer Moth Thakur Deenpal Singh said. The incident is said to have taken place around 10 days ago in an area under the Chirgaon police station, he said. In a twist to the alleged gangrape of a 22-year-old woman at a guest house in Morni in Panchkula district, the Haryana Police today arrested her husband and booked him under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, officials said. The woman's husband was booked under various provisions of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, Panchkula DCP Rajender Kumar Meena told reporters. Meena said the accused was also booked under section 370 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) which pertains to buying or disposing of any person as a slave. Police investigations showed the two key accused, already arrested in the case, were running a sex racket, the official said. "The SIT was investigating the case from all angles. Illegal mining in Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh has caused a loss of royalty of Rs 93.04 crore to the state government, the National Green Tribunal has been told by a committee constituted by it. The NGT was also informed by the panel that an amount of Rs 119.41 crore was required for restoration of the area which has been affected due to the unauthorised mining. Taking note of the submissions, a bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the Uttar Pradesh government to take steps within six months for recovering the revenue loss. Four Nepali nationals were arrested at the international airport here while attempting to board a flight to Dubai allegedly on forged no-objection certificates, police said today. The four, working here, were arrested yesterday when they tried to leave for Dubai on tourist visas using the forged NoCs, they said. Cyberabad Police Commissioner V C Sajjanar told PTI that police were looking into the role of unauthorised agents in the forgery of the NoCs. Cases had been registered against the four Nepalese for offences including cheating and forgery under the Indian Penal Code. As per immigration rules, Nepalese visiting Gulf countries from India for work purpose should have an NoC issued by the Nepal embassy in Delhi, police said.

A 81-year-old Pakistani-origin man who fathered three children by his own daughter has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail for committing incest at Bradford Crown Court in the UK. Ashraf Khan, now 81, had pleaded guilty on three charges of incest dating back to the 1980s and was sentenced by a court in northern England yesterday. His abuse of his daughter was only discovered after she confessed to her husband on her deathbed. "You are a very dishonourable and wicked gentleman, we all now see," Judge Jonathan Durham Hall told Khan in the court. "Her deathbed confession, how dreadful that must have been. Unburdening her soul about this awful trauma she had carried with her," he said. The judge also described the woman's husband as an honourable man because he continued to care for the children even after a DNA test confirmed his wife's revelation. The victim, born in Pakistan, married her husband there in the early 1980s, before moving to Bradford to join him and her father.
The Delhi High Court has directed IIT Kharagpur to accept the resignation of its former professor and whistle-blower Rajeev Kumar from the date of leaving the technical institution in June 2015 instead of 2017. Kumar fought a six-year-long legal battle since he was given compulsory retirement by IIT Kharagpur on charges of misconduct. He got a posting at the Jawaharlal Nehru University last year. Hearing a plea filed on Kumar's behalf, the court directed IIT Kharagpur to issue a fresh order accepting his resignation with effect from June 11, 2015 and communicate the same to JNU. "The respondents (IIT Kharagpur) will also calculate the benefits on the aforesaid basis and communicate the same to JNU," it said in the July 11 order. IIT Kharagpur had in May 2011 suspended Kumar on charges of misconduct. India and Bhutan are increasing cooperation in fighting economic and conventional crime to ensure checking cross border crime and apprehending fugitives, the CBI said here. A six-member delegation of Anti Corruption Commission of Bhutan, which shares 699 km border with India along sensitive North East region, is on a visit to the CBI between July 23 to July 27. The delegation is headed by Aum Kinley Yangzom, Chairperson, ACC, Bhutan. Four people, including son of an assistant sub inspector (ASI), were arrested today for allegedly being involved in several cases of loot, police said. The National Green Tribunal today directed the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to stop extraction of groundwater from borewells that are running illegally in the national capital. The tribunal made it clear that the DMRC can only use water from those borewells for which it has permission. A bench headed by Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore passed the order after it was informed that the Delhi Metro had permission for only 164 borewells. The green panel also directed the DMRC to seek permission for water extraction through borewells from the Central Ground Water Authority and inform it after getting the requisite approvals. Advocate Kush Sharma, appearing for petitioner Kush Kalra, alleged that the DMRC has installed illegal borewells right under the nose of authorities, but no action has been taken till date.
