Three persons were killed when their motorcycle was hit by a truck in the Kakrala area here, police said today. The incident took place last evening when the three persons were travelling on the motorcycle, they said. Superintendent of Police (city) Jitendra Srivastava said, "The deceased have been identified as Morpal (24), and his relatives Anuj (20) and Rita (22)." While Morpal died on the spot, Rita succumbed to her injuries on the way to Bareilly hospital. Anuj died in the Bareilly district hospital, he said. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.
The Thiruvananthapuram special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Wednesday awarded death sentence to two police officers in connection with a custodial death in 2005.An Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police K Jithukumar and a constable SV Sreekumar have been awarded capital punishment in the case. A fine of Rs 2 lakh each has also been imposed on them.In 2005, Udayakumar (27), who was taken into custody for questioning in a theft case, died in custody after being tortured by police. Udayakumar and his friend were picked up by the officers from the Sreekandeshwaram Park in the city.The duo was taken into custody as cash amounting to Rs 4500 was found in Udaykumar's possession. The two police officers had thrashed and tortured Udayakumar; they even forced him to confess the crime.Udayakumar died in custody. According to the autopsy report, 22 injury marks were found on his body.
A police officer was today caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 in Bihar's Nalanda district, a release issued by the Vigilance Department said here. Madan Yadav, a sub-inspector of Ekangar Sarai police station in Nalanda district, had sought Rs 20,000 from a local to help him in a case, it said. Finding no help from police, Dilip Kumar, a resident of Wajitpur village in Ekangar Sarai police station area of the district, approached the vigilance bureau. The bureau, after verifying his complaint, laid a trap to nab Yadav. A flying squad team was constituted under Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohammad Zamiruddin, who caught Madan Yadav red-handed while accepting the first installment of Rs 10,000 from Kumar at his rented accommodation at Sarai Bazar area, the release said. The sub-inspector would be produced before a special vigilance court at Patna after preliminary interrogation, it added.
The Madras High Court today set aside a CBI court order discharging former communications minister Dayanidhi Maran and others in the case of alleged setting up of "illegal" telephone exchanges to benefit the Sun TV Network of his brother Kalanithi Maran. Allowing the CBI's appeal against their discharge, Justice G Jaichandran directed the special court to frame charges and conclude the trial within a year from the date of receipt of the copy of the HC order. The case relates to the time when Dayanidhi, a grandnephew of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, was the minister for communications and information technology in the UPA 1 government. The CBI has alleged he misused his official position and got private telephone exchanges installed at his residences in Chennai which were used for business transactions of the Sun Network. A Gujarat court sentenced today Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel and two others to two years imprisonment in a case of rioting and arson in Visnagar town here in July 2015. Later, Hardik Patel and his two aides - Lalji Patel and A K Patel - were granted bail by the same court. Visnagar sessions court Judge V P Agarwal held Hardik Patel, Lalji Patel and A K Patel guilty under IPC sections pertaining to rioting, arson, damage to property and unlawful assembly. The three were awarded two years imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000 each, which the trio deposited in the court today. The Kerala High Court on Wednesday granted conditional bail to Malankara Orthodox Church priest Father Job Mathew, who is accused of sexually assaulting a woman.The bail was granted on the condition that he will surrender his passport and appear before the investigating officer twice a week.Father Mathew moved to the High Court this week after a Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Thiruvalla rejected his bail application.In June, the Crime Branch registered a case against four priests of the church for allegedly sexually assaulting the woman in Kottayam.One of the four priests surrendered on July 12.

A Special CBI court here today awarded death sentence to two police officers in connection with the custodial death of a 26-year-old man in 2005. Assistant Sub-Inspector K Jithakumar and Civil Police Officer S V Sreekumar were the first and second accused in the case. CBI Special Court judge J Nazer sentenced the two to death and ordered them to pay a fine of Rs two lakh each. This is believed to be the first time that capital punishment has been awarded to two serving police officers in Kerala. Three other accused in the case, T K Haridas, E K Sabu and Ajit Kumar have been sentenced to undergo three years imprisonment each for destruction of evidence and conspiracy. The third accused K V Soman had died during the pendency of the case, while another accused, V P Mohanan, was acquitted by the court earlier. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on all the given accused. According to the prosecution, Udayakumar, was taken into custody in connection with a case of theft and had died .
The Tamil Nadu government produced in the Madras High Court a video clip of Jayalalithaa from an event in July 1980 which it said disproved a woman's claim of being late chief minister's biological daughter. State Advocate General Vijay Narayan submitted a copy of the video before Justice S Vaidyanathan. He said though the petitioner claimed that she was born to Jayalalithaa on August, 14, 1980, the video of the former chief minister participating in the 27th FilmFare award function just a month earlier did not show her being in an advanced stage of pregnancy. Narayan was presenting his arguments on the petition filed by the Bengaluru-based woman, who claimed that she was born to Jayalaithaa and given in adoption. She was seeking a DNA test to prove her parentage. The woman had filed the petition months after Jayalalithaa's death in December 2016, claiming that her foster father had revealed about her mother just before his demise. A Hisar court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping an 11-year-old girl in this district. Additional District and Sessions Judge Dr Pankaj sentenced Vikram, a resident of Amroha in Uttar Pradesh, to life in prison yesterday after finding him guilty of raping the minor at a locality in Hisar last year. The court also slapped a fine of Rs two lakh on Vikram. Of this, Rs one lakh is to be given as a compensation to the victim. According to the prosecution, the family of the victim was originally from Madhya Pradesh and living in a rented accommodation in a colony here. On July 5 last year, the accused barged into the girl's house and raped her when she was alone as her parents were out for some work. The girl alleged that the accused threatened her of dire consequences if she revealed the matter to anyone. She narrated her ordeal to the parents after which her mother lodged a police complaint. Five men aged from 22 to 41 were charged today over a suspected acid attack on a three-year-old boy in Britain. The boy was taken to hospital with serious burns to his arm and face following the attack outside a store in Worcester, central England, on Saturday. He has since been discharged but the long-term implications of his injuries are not yet known. Three men from London, aged 26, 25 and 22, and two men from Wolverhampton aged 41 and 39, were charged with conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm, West Mercia Police said. Suspects are usually publicly identified when they are charged, but the police said that they would not be naming them, "for legal reasons". The men were due to appear at Kidderminster Magistrates' Court later Wednesday.
Three sisters were found dead in east Delhi's Mandawali area, police said today. They were aged two, four and eight respectively and were declared brought dead by the hospital yesterday, they added. They were brought there by their family members and the hospital authorities informed the police about their deaths. The police, however, have ruled out any foul play as no injury marks were found on their bodies, a police officer said. It seemed to be a case of natural death, he said, adding that the bodies were sent for postmortem and an inquiry ordered in the case. Their father was unemployed and the family was financially weak.

Eight people have been sentenced to death and 88 jailed for life over the sorcery-related killings of seven men and children in Papua New Guinea, a report said today. The frenzied murders happened in April 2014 in the Pacific nation's Madang province, with the National Court hearing a "berserk" crowd used bows and arrows, knives and axes to kill the victims.
