SC asks Swamy to mention his Ayodhya plea after verdict on whether mosques are integral to Islam

The Supreme Court today asked BJP leader Subramanian Swamy to mention his plea, seeking enforcement of his fundamental right to pray at the disputed site in Ayodhya, after it pronounces its verdict on the question of whether mosques are integral to Islam. On July 20, the special bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra reserved its order on a plea by Muslim groups of the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute seeking reconsideration by a larger bench on the observations made by it in a 1994 verdict that a mosque was not integral to Islam. M Siddiq, one of the original litigants of the Ayodhya case who has died and is being represented through his legal heir, had assailed certain findings of the 1994 verdict in the case of M Ismail Faruqui holding that a mosque was not integral to the prayers offered by the followers of Islam. Haryana moves SC seeking early hearing of SYL row

The Haryana government today moved the Supreme Court seeking early hearing in the matter related to its row with Punjab over the Satluj-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal. The matter was mentioned before a bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud. The bench asked Haryana's counsel to approach the apex court registry for listing of the matter before an appropriate bench. The apex court had earlier granted the Centre time to explore the possibility of an amicable solution to the SYL canal row between Punjab and Haryana. On July 11, the apex court said it was obligatory for Punjab and Haryana to respect and execute its orders on the SYL canal issue. The controversial 1981 water-sharing agreement came into being after Haryana was carved out of Punjab in 1966. Pakistani-origin man behind Toronto mass shooting: Canadian police

The gunman who killed two persons and injured 13 others in a deadly mass shooting in Canada's largest city Toronto has been identified as Pakistani-origin Faisal Hussain, according to the police. Hussain, 29, was suffering from psychosis and was getting professional help, Canada's public broadcaster CBC News reported. A resident of Toronto, Hussain worked in a grocery store. On Sunday, he opened fire in Toronto's vibrant Greektown neighbourhood, killing a 10-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman. Thirteen people were also injured in the shooting, some with potentially life-altering injuries. Later, Hussain died after a brief exchange of gunfire with the police on Danforth Avenue. It was not immediately clear whether he shot himself dead or was killed by the police. The motive behind the shooting, rare in Toronto, was also not immediately knwon. Barmer: 2 arrested in Dalit man lynching case

The Rajasthan Police has arrested two people in connection with Dalit man's lynching incident in Barmer.22-year-old Khetaram was beaten to death by a mob on Tuesday for allegedly having an affair with a Muslim woman in Rajasthan's Barmer.Meanwhile, Barmer Deputy Superintendent of Police Surinder Kumar said, "The victim succumbed to severe injuries. Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident."According to police, the post-mortem report revealed that the deceased was severely beaten and that the attackers also tried to strangulate him.Further investigation in the matter is underway.

Delhi: 13 children hospitalised after consuming mid-day meal

At least 13 children and a helper at an Anganwadi center in Uttam Nagar were hospitalised on Tuesday allegedly after consuming mid-day meal here.The children allegedly complained of vomiting and lost consciousness, after which they were rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.Rice and boiled gram were served to the children and pregnant women, which was supplied by Akriti Self Help Group, based in Uttam Nagar's Deepak Vihar.According to the police, the pregnant women who consumed the same meal did not complain of any uneasiness.47-year-old Anita, who is a resident of Hastal Vihar in Uttam Nagar, has been running this Anganwadi center for the past 11 years.The center has 46 children and 13 pregnant women.A case was registered in connection with the incident.No person has been arrested yet.The investigation is underway.

US liquor heiress charged in New York 'sex slave' case

An American heiress to a liquor fortune was arrested and charged today in connection with a secretive society of women sex slaves, before being released on a USD 100 million bond, US prosecutors said. Clare Bronfman, 39, a philanthropist and former equestrian show jumper, is the daughter of Edgar Bronfman, the late Canadian chairman of liquor giant Seagram whose net worth was estimated at USD 2.6 billion. Bronfman appeared before a judge in Brooklyn, New York and was released with an ankle bracelet after prosecutors argued she was a flight risk. She was a member of the executive board of Nxivm, a purported self-help group accused of presiding over a secretive society of women sex slaves that shot to notoriety for its initiation rites branding them with the founder's initials. She is accused of using her wealth to fund Nxivm, and is charged with racketeering conspiracy, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years, and identity theft with a statutory maximum sentence of 15 years. Actor Bill Cosby who was earlier convicted in a sexual assault case, might be classified as a 'sexual predator.'According to Page Six, Sexual Offenders Assessment Board of Pennsylvania has recommended labeling Cosby as a 'sexually violent predator.'The Montgomery County District Attorney has requested a hearing so that a judge can decide if the 'Fat Albert' actor should be classified as a sexually violent predator.Cosby, 80, was convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault for drugging and sexually assaulting former Temple University basketball administrator Andrea Constand in a Philadelphia suburb in 2004.The former comedian faces a sentence of 10 years on each count.The comedian first went to trial last year, and the case ended in a mistrial after the jury failed to deliver a verdict.

Alwar lynching a case of custodial death, suggests Kataria

1 more arrested in Gauri Lankesh murder case

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested one more suspect in connection with the Gauri Lankesh murder case.Rajesh (50) was arrested from Madikeri district of Karnataka on July 23 and was sent to police custody till August 6.Earlier, the SIT had arrested two more suspects in connection with the murder case.Amit and Ganesh were arrested from Hubli on Sunday and were produced before the third Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) court on Monday.The court had also sent them to police custody till August 6.Earlier six people, including Parshuram Waghmare, K. T. Naveen Kumar alias Hotte Manja, Amol Kale, Manohar Edve, Sujeeth Kumar alias Praveen and Amit Degvekar were arrested in the case.Gauri Lankesh was shot dead outside her Bengaluru residence on September 5 last year.

Blatant reliance on social media needs to be checked by citizens themselves: CJI

Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra today said the blatant reliance on social media needs to be checked by citizens themselves in order to ensure peace and order in the society. The Chief Justice said there was a surge in mob lynching incidents recently based on "viral texts on social media" leading to "mobocracy". The CJI was delivering the presidential address at a function organised by the International Law Association (ILA), where eminent jurist N R Madhava Menon delivered a lecture on Courts, Media and Fair Trial Guarantee. Woman, grandson killed as car gets crushed between buses

An elderly woman and her grandson died after their car was sandwiched between two buses in northeast Delhi's Nand Nagri this afternoon, police said. The accident took place around 11.30 am when Lilavati (75) and her grandson Amit Garg (30), were on their way to the District Magistrate's office, they said. Their hatchback car was crushed between a cluster bus that rammed into it from behind and a DTC bus which was moving ahead of it. The impact of the accident was such that the car was completely mangled and the doors were jammed. With the help of locals, the police tried to pull the injured out of the car. It took them approximately 20-25 minutes to take the injured out of the car, the police said. Goa temple priest booked in second molestation case

A woman today accused a priest of the Mangueshi Temple in Goa of molesting her, the second such complaint against him in a week, police said. The woman, in her 20s, filed a complaint against the priest with the Ponda police, accusing him of molesting her, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Ponda) Mahesh Gaonkar said. The priest has been booked under IPC section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), he said. According to the complainant, the priest tried to kiss her near the sanctum sanctorum of the temple while she was on a visit to the famous shrine in Ponda taluka, about 20km from Panaji. The alleged incident took place last month, but the complaint was filed today. Last week, another woman had filed a similar complaint against the priest, police have said. The first incident also allegedly took place last month. In this case, the complainant is a US-based woman of Goa origin, they said.

HC allows nine petitioners to file I-T returns sans Aadhaar

The Madras High Court today allowed nine petitioners to file their Income Tax returns manually without quoting Aadhaar number for the assessment year 2018-19. A division bench of Justices M M Sundresh and Anand Venkatesh passed the interim order noting that since the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar itself was yet to be decided, the petitioners could be allowed to file I-T returns without the Aadhaar. However, it made it clear, "If the Supreme Court decides to uphold the constitutionality of Aadhaar, then the petitioners would have to file revised return quoting Aadhaar." The Supreme Court had on May 10 reserved its verdict on a batch of pleas challenging the constitutional validity of the Centre's flagship Aadhaar scheme and its enabling 2016 law after a marathon hearing that went on for 38 days spanning four-and-half months. A Vijayawada-based civil contractor has been arrested for allegedly calling up Chhattisgarh Congress president Bhupesh Baghel by posing as Naxal leader Ganapathi and offering "support" of ultras for upcoming assembly elections, police said today. The person, identified as Bhaskar Rao, was arrested yesterday from his native place in Andhra Pradesh with the support of the AP police, Raipur Additional Superintendent of Police Prafulla Thakur told PTI. "As per preliminary investigation, Rao had no Maoist links and was a civil contractor. Prima facie he was also found to be a worker of the Congress party," Thakur said. Private tutor sentenced to six-months imprisonment for beating boy

A Bidhanagar court today sentenced a private tutor to six months imprisonment for beating a three-and-a-half-year-old boy. The tutor, Pooja Singh, had beaten the boy at his home in Lake Town area in the northern fringes of Kolkata on July 22, 2014, following which a video of the incident had become viral. Justice Shubra Som Ghoshal sentenced her to six-months imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on her today. The court, however, granted her bail.

No decision yet to handover Bowring institute case to ED:IT

The Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (Goa-Karnataka region) B R Balakrishnan today said it has not yet been decided to handover the case relating to seizure of cash and valuables from three lockers of the Bowring institute, an elite club, to Enforcement Directorate. Club secretary Srikanth has said I-T sleuths on being alerted by the club on Friday had seized the valuables. The bags in the lockers reportedly contained about Rs 3.90 crore, gold bars weighing about 650 grams, a Rolex watch and another watch valued to be around Rs 35-40 lakh.
