Convict commits suicide in Faridkot jail

A 65-year-old convict, lodged in Modern Jail Faridkot, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ventilation grill in his barrack, officials said today. The incident took place last night, they said, adding that the deceased was identified as Gurjain Singh. He was serving life imprisonment in a murder case, the police added.

Minor girl raped by neighbour in Hyderabad

A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by his neighbour in her aunt's house here, police said today. The incident happened yesterday when the 25-year-old man barged into a bathroom and allegedly sexually assaulted her, they said. Based on a complaint lodged by the victim, a case was registered on charges of rape, wrongful confinement and other provisions besides under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, they added. The accused, working at a private hospital, is being questioned, police said.

Man arrested with 4.880 kg of charas

A man was arrested today for allegedly supplying drugs and 4.880 kg of charas was seized from his possession, police said. The accused was identified as Jitender, a native of Karsog in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, they said. Acting on a tip-off, the Special Task Force (STF) today nabbed the accused from Sonepat, the police said. A case under the NDPS Act was registered against him, they said, adding that a probe in the matter is underway.

Ranchi baby selling racket: Police find the fourth child

Jharkhand Police said today that they have found the fourth child "given away for free" by a woman who worked as a nun for a shelter home run by Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity in Ranchi. The police statement came a day after the woman "confessed" about having sold three children and giving away the fourth for free to different persons. Superintendent of Police Aman Kumar told PTI that the fourth child was traced in Ranchi today. He declined to give details, saying the matter was "highly confidential". Yesterday, Senior Superintendent of Police Anis Gupta said sister Konsalia of the charity has confessed to the crime and said she had "sold" the three kids to three persons. The West Bengal police arrested Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) leader Tarun Sen for allegedly demanding money from a student for admission.Sen is a leader of TMCP, the student wing of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) and was the former general secretary of Bagdogra College.He was arrested on Saturday night and booked under Sections 341, 325, 384, 379, 506, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Woman allegedly raped in her home, dragged to temple premises and burnt alive: police

A woman was allegedly burnt alive inside a temple premises after she was raped by five persons in her house in a village in the Rajpura area in Sambhal district, police said today. The incident took place on Saturday at about 2.30 am when the victim, about 30-years of age, was in her house with her daughter, they said. Five persons barged into the house and raped her according to the complaint, police officials said. The five accused later dragged her to a hut in a temple premises and burnt her alive, said Gunnaur Circle Officer Aqil Ahmad, quoting from the complaint lodged by the victim's husband. The hut, where the woman was burnt alive, was used to perform 'yagna and havan', SHO, Rajpura, Arun Kumar told PTI. Woman, her paramour arrested for killing husband

A 48-year-old man was allegedly killed by his wife and her paramour in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, police said today. The matter came to light after the deceased's brother lodged a complaint with the police seeking intervention to resolve the missing case of Rishi Pal. Acting on the complaint, the police registered an FIR. Pal used to give tution to Ajay Kumar's (22) children. The police said Kumar used to visit the deceased's house daily and subsequently developed illicit relations with Pal's wife Anita (34). Anita and her paramour Kumar were arrested for killing Pal and produced before a local court which sent them to police custody till July 20, they said. During interrogation, the accused confessed to their crime, the police said. Pal's body was found from the courtyard of Kumar's house in Haryana, they said.

Man killed after argument over donation amount to renovate temple

Six men allegedly choked to death a 52-year-old man in Rajasthan's Baran district after an argument over the donation amount for renovation of a community temple, a police officer said today. He said the six men have not been arrested yet as the matter was being investigated. The incident happened last evening in Nayagaon village, which has a majority of members from the Meena community. The quarrel broke out after the community members argued over the amount the community members should contribute to renovate the temple. The body of Dhanraj Meena has been handed over to his family after postmortem at a government hospital, he said.

Minor girl raped in Phagwara

A 13-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a man here, police said today. Inspector Baldev Singh Randhawa, Station House Officer (SHO), Government Railway Police (GRP), Jalandhar told reporters here that the accused, a resident of local Preet Nagar colony, was arrested. He was booked under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the SHO said. The victim belonged to the Sugar mill colony, he said. Her parents were blind and they made their living by begging, GRP officials said. They said the victim alleged that the accused took her to his room and allegedly forced her to drink liquor. He then accused took her to the bushes near the railway station and allegedly raped her, police said. The girl was admitted to the local civil hospital and got medically examined, they said.

J&K administration orders committees for screening of special police officers

The J&K administration has ordered constitution of district-level official committees for screening of special police officers (SPOs) engaged during the past six years. According to an order issued by the state Home Department, each committee will be headed by the concerned Deputy Commissioner with concerned district SSP and Dy Superintendent of Police (CID-SB) as members. These committees shall assess and screen the SPOs engaged during the past 6 years, with regard to their selection, antecedents and performance, the order said adding the committees shall submit their report to the Home Department within one month.

Teenager found dead in hostel

A 16-year-old boy was found dead inside his school hostel room in suspicious conditions in Kelwada town of Baran district today, an official said. The deceased, identified as Yashwant Kirad, was a class 10 student in a private school here, SHO of Kelwada police station Vijendra Singh said. He was a a resident of Khurrakheda in Guna district of Madhya Pradesh. The matter came to light when his roommates tried to wake him up in the morning but there was no response from him, Singh said. Kirad was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was declared brought dead by doctors. According to the doctors, silent heart attack is likely to be the reason behind the death as no injury marks on the body were visible. However, the exact cause of the death could not be ascertained.

Sexual harassment case: HC asks AI to replace panel chief on air hostess' complaint

The Delhi High Court has asked Air India to replace the chairperson of its panel looking into the sexual harassment allegations by an air hostess against one of its senior officials following which the national carrier agreed to bring in a new person. The complainant had claimed that the panel chairperson was close to the official accused of misconduct. Air India agreed to replace the chairperson of its internal complaints committee (ICC) after the high court made it clear that it would otherwise stay the proceedings before the panel. "The counsel for respondent 1 (Air India) states that if petitioner has any apprehension against current chairperson of the ICC, respondent 1 shall without going into the apprehension and in the petitioner's interest, appoint another eminent lady as the chairperson of the ICC," Justice Vibhu Bakhru said. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Sunday clarified that no proposal was made to set up Shariat courts in all districts across the country."We have never talked about setting up Shariat courts in all districts across the country. Female flight attendant commits suicide in Delhi: Police

A female flight attendant allegedly committed suicide after jumping from the terrace of her residence in South Delhi's Hauz Khas, police said today. On July 13, the victim, who is in her 40s, allegedly jumped from the terrace of her house. Her husband immediately rushed her to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead, the police said. The deceased was married for seven years and used to live with her husband in Hauz Khas, it said. The body has been sent for postmortem, the police said, adding that a case has been registered and her family members are being questioned.

Daily wager found dead on road, cops suspect murder

A 40-year-old daily wager was today found dead on the road near Chamahandi area in Odisha's Ganjam district, police said. The circumstantial evidences suggest that B Enketeswar Patra, who worked at a construction in the district, was stoned to death, inspector in-charge of Chamakhandi police station, Chitta Ranjan Behera, said. Prima facie, it seems personal enmity was the reason behind his killing, he said.
