2 sentenced in murder of Chinese grad student in Los Angeles

A woman was sentenced to life in prison for the beating death of a University of Southern California graduate student from China, and a co-defendant was given a term of 15 years to life. Alejandra Guerrero, 20, was sentenced yesterday on a first-degree murder conviction in the 2014 attack on 24-year-old engineering student Xinran Ji. Her prison term is without possibility of parole. Guerrero was one of four people accused of taking part in the fatal attack on Ji as he walked home after a late-night study session. Guerrero and Andrew Garcia, 22, who was sentenced last year to life in prison, got out of a car to beat Ji with a wrench and a baseball bat while co-defendant Jonathan Del Carmen, 23, remained in the car. Doctor shot dead over old enmity in Bulandshahr

A doctor was gunned down allegedly by three bike-borne assailants, including his brother-in law, over an old enmity in Kakod town of the district today, police said. Dr Mukesh was examining a patient in the morning when the assailants came and fired bullets at him, SP (city) Praveen Ranjan said. He was rushed to a Noida hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. An FIR has been lodged by the deceased's wife Manju, naming three persons, police said.

Bajrangi killer to be shifted to Fatehgarh jail from Baghpat

Sunil Rathi, the alleged killer of mafia don Munna Bajrangi, will be shifted from Baghpat District Jail to Fatehgarh Central Jail on an administrative ground, an order issued by the UP government said. The state government's move comes following reports from the Baghpat district jail authorities to shift Rathi to another jail, a senior UP Police official said. On July 9, mafia don Prem Prakash Singh, alias Munna Bajrangi, was shot dead, hours before he was to be produced in a local court in Baghpat in a case of extorting money from a former BSP legislator, police said. Bajrangi was reportedly killed by Rathi, who is lodged in Baghpat jail since July 31 last year, officials said. Four jail officials, including the jailor and the head warden, were suspended in connection with the incident. 51-year-old Bajrangi was listed as an accused in 40 criminal cases, including those of murder and extortion. Woman, held hostage by 'jilted lover', rescued after 12 hours

A 12-hour hostage drama ended this evening when the city police rescued a model who was held captive after holding talks with her jilter lover who held her captive in an apartment here, demanding that she marry him. The 26-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital around 7 pm as she had suffered minor injuries, police said. Police negotiators used a hydraulic ladder to talk through a window to Rohit Singh, who held the woman hostage in her fifth-floor apartment in the building in Misrod area. Two arrested after man thrashed to death during theft bid in Burari

Two men were arrested for allegedly thrashing a 31-year-old suspected thief to death in North Delhi's Burari, the police said today. Birbal fell down stairs only to be caught red-handed and thrashed to death allegedly by a mob in a failed theft attempt on July 11. The accused, identified as Khurshid (24) and Feroz (25), were arrested today. They are related to the owner of the house in which Birbal had allegedly entered for stealing. Efforts are on to identify the others who were involved in thrashing Birbal, the police said. Birbal's post-mortem was carried out and a report is awaited. 5 Guru Satam aides arrested for threatening builder in Mumbai

Five people, who police claimed were aides of fugitive gangster Guru Satam, were today arrested for allegedly threatening a builder and trying to extort money from him. Police identified the five, arrested by the Anti Extortion Cell of the Mumbai Police's Crime Branch, as Amol Vichare, Bharat Solanki, Rajesh Ambre, Bipin Dhotre and Dipak Lodhia. "We have recovered two revolvers, five live cartridges and 11 mobile phones from the accused. The builder was receiving threat calls from abroad in the name of Guru Satam for the last few years," said Dilip Sawant, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime). He said that gang members started visiting the builder's construction site after he began ignoring these threat calls. Scribe molestation case: Cop suspended, probe ordered

The district police has suspended a trainee sub-inspector who allegedly asked for a "hug" from a female journalist when he visited her home for police verification for her passport renewal. District police chief Vaibhav Krishna said an FIR will be lodged against trainee SI Devendra Chaudhary and further action taken if he is found guilty. The journalist, who lives in Vasundhara Colony of Sahibabad, took to Twitter to complain that the policeman asked for a hug after saying, I have done your verification. Now what will you give me?. The accused policeman had gone to the journalist's home for police verification yesterday morning when the alleged incident happened. 'Child sale racket': Court sends nun to 4-day police remand

Sister Konsalia and Anima Indwar, arrested in connection with the alleged "sale" of babies by Nirmal Hriday, a shelter home run by the Mother Teresa-founded Missionaries of Charity, were sent to a four-day police custody by a court here today. Chief Judicial Magistrate Shwaymbhu sent the two to police custody. A senior police officer said they took Sister Konsalia and Indwar into remand for further interrogation. "We have taken them into remand for four days for questioning," the officer said. Sister Konsalia was arrested on July 5 for allegedly "selling" a child born to a minor inmate of the home to a couple from Uttar Pradesh. Indwar was arrested on July 4. Both of them were in judicial custody. Meanwhile, the police said the fourth child allegedly "sold" by the home was yet to be traced. The third of the four children allegedly "sold" by the shelter home, who was rescued by the police from Simdega on Wednesday, was handed over to his adoptive parents yesterday.

Vyapam scam: ED files first charge sheet against mastermind, board officials

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today filed a charge sheet in the Vyapam scam case of Madhya Pradesh against alleged mastermind Dr Jagdish Sagar, two officials of the exam board and others under the anti-money laundering law, officials said. Apart from middleman Sagar, Dr Vinod Bhandari who is the ex-chairman of Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS), and Vyapam officials Dr Pankaj Trivedi and Nitin Mohindra have been named as accused in the 2,505-page prosecution complaint filed before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court here, the agency said. Yadav-era gold coins from 12th century found in Chhattisgarh

Gold coins belonging to the 12th century have been found during earth-digging for a road construction in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district, officials today said. A pot containing 57 gold coins, a silver coin and a gold earring was unearthed on July 10 during the construction of a road between Korkoti and Bedma villages, district collector Neelkanth Tekam said. Korkoti Sarpanch Nehrulal Baghel today handed over the pot and its contents to him, he said. The pot, buried few feet underground, was discovered by a woman labourer, following which other workers informed the villagers, Tekam told PTI. As per the preliminary investigation, the coins date back to the 12th and 13th century. The inscriptions on the coins are in a script which was prevalent during the time of Yadav dynasty which ruled over Vidarbha (presently in Maharashtra), he said. Man killed, friend injured after motorcycle skids over pothole

A man was killed and another injured after the motorcycle they were travelling on skidded over a pothole in Sanpada in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, police said. The incident happened at around 1:30am today on the Thane-Belapur highway. "Shani Vishwakarma (27) and his friend Kamlesh Jadhav were travelling on a motorcycle when it hit a pothole and skidded. Both of them fell and received serious injuries," said Suraj Padvi, senior inspector, Sanpada police. He added that the two were rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared Vishwakarma, a resident of Ulwe, dead on arrival. Jadhav is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, he said. An accidental death report has been registered and further investigations were underway, the official added.

Ranchi court awards death sentence to man for triple murder

A court here today awarded death sentence to a man for killing his father, step mother and step brother in 2014. The court of additional judicial commissioner Rajiv Anand had convicted Nitesh Kumar Sahu for the triple murder on July 10 and today pronounced that he should be hanged till death. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 5000 on Sahu. On the intervening night of July 12 and 13, 2014, Sahu axed his father Shivnandan Sahu, step mother Kunti Devi and five-year-old step brother to death at Lahana village under Ratu police station in Ranchi district.
