The Supreme Court today termed as "very serious" the charges in the Kottiyoor sex scandal in Kerala involving the alleged rape of a minor by a Catholic priest. The observation of a bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan came on a plea by two doctors and a hospital administrator seeking stay of a criminal trial against them. The bench posted the matter for further hearing on July 26 and said the orders on stay of trial plea will be passed on that day. The two doctors and a hospital administrator have been charged under the provisions of the POCSO Act for allegedly covering up the crime, not reporting it to the police after they had come in contact with the minor rape victim and destroying of evidence. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia today alleged that the BJP was pressuring the IAS officers to "stall" the payment of bills to lawyers who have appeared for the Delhi government in the Supreme Court. Two trials opened in Tunisia today over the killings of protesters during the 2011 revolution, part of a process aimed at redressing rights abuses under the toppled regime. Judges will rule on the guilt of deposed president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, his former interior minister Rafik Belhaj Kacem and high ranking security officials. The trials are the first cases under the mandate of Tunisia's Truth and Dignity Commission to centre on protesters killed during the revolution that sparked the Arab Spring uprisings. The Supreme Court today said that steps were being taken to make judicial appointments and fill up the vacancies in the higher judiciary. A bench of Chief justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud observed that the apex court collegium has been taking steps in this regard. On July 2 also, the apex court, while hearing a petition filed by the Madras Bar Association, had made similar observations saying that "some progress" has been made in relation to judicial appointments. The bench was today hearing the PIL filed by Youth Bar Association of India seeking directions to the apex court and the Calcutta High Court collegium to fill up vacancies in that high court. The bar body had also sought filling up of vacancies in other high courts and in the apex court. The plea said that due to non-appointment of judges, the fundamental rights of speedy justice, equality and life and personal liberty of the citizens, were being violated.
A plea was today moved in the Supreme Court against the alleged attempt of the Uttar Pradesh government to withdraw around 131 cases related to the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots including those involving serious offences like attempt to murder. The plea filed by Shamli resident Imran alleged that the cases sought to be withdrawn include those in which UP minister Suresh Rana, former Union minister Sanjiv Balyan, MP Bhartendu Singh, MLA Umesh Malik and ruling party leader Sadhvi Prachi are accused. Senior journalist Kalpesh Yagnik died today after suffering a cardiac arrest here, family sources said. He was 55. Yagnik, group editor of popular Hindi daily 'Dainik Bhaskar', left behind his mother, wife and two daughters. His mortal remains were consigned to flames at the Tilak Nagar crematorium here. According to the sources, Yagnik suffered a heart attack last night at his office. He was rushed to a hospital where he died during treatment in the early hours of today. A district court today sent three doctors to jail for three years for filing a wrong postmortem report which suggested that a girl had died of hanging when she was strangled. The 14-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree on the campus of the Nighasan police station on June 10, 2011. Dr S P Singh, Dr A K Agrawal and Dr A K Sharma were then posted at the district hospital in Kheri where the first postmortem was conducted. In their report, the doctors described ante-mortem hanging to be cause of death. However, the case was handed over to the CB-CID and a fresh postmortem was carried out by a team of four doctors from Lucknow. The second postmortem established ante-mortem strangulation, which suggested murder instead of suicide as the likely cause of death. Later, an FIR was lodged against the doctors by a CB-CID inspector. A charge sheet was filed against them in the court of chief judicial magistrate in August 2014. The Supreme Court today stayed three orders of the Delhi High Court granting parole and bail to an accused facing trial in the sensational 2008 murder case of TV journalist Soumya Viswanathan. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan issued notice and sought the reply of accused Ravi Kapoor on a plea of Delhi Police challenging the high court orders. Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh, appearing for the police, said the accused was a dreaded criminal and had been awarded death by the trial court in a murder case which was later commuted to life sentence by the high court. The Supreme Court today sought the response of the Jharkhand government and the Tata Steel company on a plea seeking to declare the steel city of Jamshedpur as a municipality. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra issued notice to the state government, Tata Steel and Jamshedpur Utilities Services Ltd (JUSCO) on a PIL filed by social activist Jawaharlal Sharma, who alleged that the city was being run as a "personal property" by the private firm. The bench, which also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, however said the notice would not come in the way of the state government taking a decision in the matter. Three people were arrested with 16 kg of opium worth Rs 1 crore in Rajasthan's Nagaur district today, police said. At least 16 packets of opium, weighing 1 kg each, were found in a tool box of a truck at a check post near Parbatsar, SP (Nagaur) Anil Deshmukh said. The truck driver, identified as Hakim Khan, and his helper Ayub Khan had brought the narcotic substance from Jharkhand and were on their way to deliver it to Hazari Lal Soni in Phalodi town, he said.
