Gram sachiv arrested for accepting bribe

A gram sachiv was arrested today for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000 in Rajasthan's Sriganganagar district, an official said. Acting on a complaint lodged by Surendra Kumhar, officials at the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested the accused, identified as Sukhpal Singh, said ASP Rajendra Dhindhoriya. According to the complainant, Singh had demanded the bribe from him for mutating a piece of land belonging to his father in his name, Dhindhoriya said. A case was registered against Singh under the Prevention of Corruption Act, he said.

Body of 25-yr-old bearing stab wounds found in Rajasthan

The body of a 25-year-old man bearing stab wounds was found at a farm in Amer area here today, police said. The deceased, identified as Mukesh Kumar Saini (25), had injury marks caused by a sharp edged weapon in the stomach and the head, Amer police station SHO Narendra Kumar said. He said the body was handed over to the kin of the deceased after postmortem and a case of murder lodged against unidentified accused. Three suspects were being interrogated in this connection, the SHO added.

2 woman teachers convicted of sexual assault on 5-yr-old girl in Bihar

A court here has convicted two woman teachers of a renowned English-medium school for "unnatural sexual act" with a five-year-old girl student. The order was passed yesterday by Special POCSO judge Ravindra Nath Tripathi, who fixed July 20 as the date for deciding the quantum of sentence for Nutan Joseph and Indu Anand. Special Public Prosecutor Suresh Chandra Prasad said the two women have been held guilty under relevant sections of the IPC as well as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Joseph and Anand were arrested in November, 2016, after the girl's parents lodged a complaint against them at Mahila Thana here. According to the FIR, the parents had said that the two teachers asked their 5-year-old girl to undress in a classroom and then sexually assaulted her. A medical test conducted on the minor also confirmed the assault.

Sharif, daughter set to arrive in Lahore to face arrest in graft case

Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam are set to be arrested today after their arrival here from London following their conviction in a corruption case described by Pakistan's embattled former prime minister as a "blind revenge" amid a crackdown on his party activists. Sharif, 68, the supremo of the Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz, and Maryam stopped over in Abu Dhabi on their way to Pakistan from London. Sharif and Maryam are expected to land at Lahore's Allama Iqbal International Airport at 6.15 PM (local time) via Abu Dhabi on Etihad Airways flight EY243, the Dawn reported. Security has been tightened and all roads leading to Punjab's capital city have been blocked to prevent PML-N supporters to reach there. Travel to and from the airport had reportedly been restricted. Rape case: Delhi HC stays registration of FIR against BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain

The Delhi High Court today stayed a trial court order directing the Delhi Police to register an FIR against BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain on a woman's complaint alleging rape. Justice A K Pathak issued notice and sought the response of the alleged victim and the police on Hussain's plea, challenging the trial court's order passed yesterday. The Delhi-based woman had, in January, moved the trial court, seeking registration of an FIR against Hussain on her allegation of rape. The high court, which was initially not inclined to stay the trial court order, later said, "The operation of the trial court's July 12 order to remain stayed till the next date of hearing i.e December 6." A magisterial court had, on July 7, ordered registration of an FIR against Hussain, saying a cognizable offence was made out in the complaint of the woman. This was challenged by the BJP leader before a sessions court, which had dismissed his plea. Hussain moved the high court today, seeking a stay on or quashing .

Thief returns stolen gold ornaments with an apology note

: A man who stole gold ornaments from a house here returned it two days later with an apology letter. The thief had gained entry into the house in Thakazhi panchayat when the family was away attending a relative's on Tuesday. The intruder broke open the back door and took away the valuables--a finger ring, earring and a locket kept in the almirah. When the family returned, they realised the house was burgled and immediately informed the police. However, by then the thief seemed to have second thoughts about his misdemeanour and returned the ornaments to the owner with an apology letter, pleading not to get him arrested. "Please do not get me arrested. Pardon me. I am sorry. The mistake I have committed is due to my extreme conditions," he said in the letter. Police said no case has been registered as the man has returned the gold.

Man kills self under pressure from retired IAS to get demonetised notes worth Rs 10 cr exchanged

A former sugar mill manager allegedly shot himself after being pressured by a retired IAS officer to get demonetised currency notes worth Rs 10 crore exchanged in a village in Shamli district, police said today. The incident occurred in Badhev village under the Adarsh Mandi police station area last evening, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shalok Kumar said. The victim, Vijay Singh (51), left a suicide note accusing brother-in-law and retired IAS officer Vinod Kumar Pawar of putting pressure on him to get the demonetised notes exchanged, he said. According to the suicide note, the victim had helped the accused exchange demonetised notes worth Rs 50 lakh earlier, the ASP said, adding that he also alleged that Pawar had forcibly captured a piece of land belonging to Singh's mother. The pistol used in the suicide was seized and the note sent to handwriting experts for verification, the ASP said. Egypt court sentences 37 over illicit human organ trade

An Egyptian court has sentenced 37 people to prison terms ranging from three to 15 years for illegally trafficking in human organs. The rulings yesterday in Cairo Criminal Court, reported by the state-run Al Ahram newspaper, sentenced six people to 15 years, 11 to seven years and 20 to three years. The sentences can be appealed. Three people were acquitted. An investigation found that doctors, medical workers and intermediaries were involved in multiple incidents of illicit organ transplants and harvesting of human organs. The probe found that the defendants exploited poor Egyptians who sold their organs. Egypt prohibits the sale of human organs under a 2010 law but some Egyptians, driven by poverty, offer to sell theirs to make ends meet.

Coal scam: Naveen Jindal faces additional charges

A special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday ordered framing of additional charges against industrialist and Congress leader Naveen Jindal for alleged abetment of bribery in the Amarkonda Murgdangal coal allocation case.Abetment of bribery is a punishable offence under Section 12 in the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, with imprisonment for a term of six months to five years.The court has also ordered framing of charges against Nihar Stock Ltd Director BSN Surya Narayan, Mumbai Essar Power Ltd executive vice chairman Sushil Maroo and Jindal Steel and Power (JSPL) advisor Anand Goel under section 120 (B) of the Indian Penal Code (criminal conspiracy).Earlier, the CBI special court had framed charges against Jindal and others for alleged bribery in the case pertaining to irregularities in the Jharkhand coal blocks.An additional charge sheet was filed later against Narayan, Maroo, Goel and Gurgaon based Green Infra's Sidharth Madra, and Mumbai-based K. NCLAT directs Jaypee Infratech RP to submit status report

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) today asked the resolution professional (RP) of Jaypee Infratech to submit details on the progress of the insolvency resolution process of the debt-ridden firm. A two member bench of the appellate tribunal, headed by Chairman Justice S J Mukhopadhaya, has asked the RP to list out the stage of the corporate insolvency resolution process. "RP would file a reply with details of resolution plan including the stage at which it is in currently," said NCLAT. It has also asked to answer whether any plan is with the RP or the committee of creditors (CoC), and whether that particular plan has been accepted or rejected. The appellate tribunal was hearing a batch of petitions filed by several banks. 2 held for rape-and-murder of women in Assam trains

The prime accused and his accomplice in the rape-and-murder case of two women on board two trains in Assam have been arrested, the police said. The main accused, Bikash Das, was held from Tinsukia Railway Station yesterday evening, while his accomplice Bipin Pandey was arrested from Dibrugarh-Bangalore Express at Banipur Station in the early hours today, the police said. Unidentified people demand extortion money from ashram head in UP

A head of an ashram here has alleged that she has received an extortion demand of Rs 1 crore, police said today. On the complaint of Mahashakti Pith ashram chief Sadhvi Yogniman Rajaneshvari, a case was registered yesterday at Bhopa police station, Superintendent of Police (SP), Rural, Ajay Sahdev, said. The complainant said she has received a letter in which the sender demanded Rs 1 crore and threatened to kill her if she failed to pay the amount, he said. The sender is yet to be identified, the SP said, adding that this is the second letter the sadhvi has received. Last month, she had lodged a complaint, saying unknown people had demanded she pay extortion money by June 15, police said. The matters are being investigated, Sahdev said.

UP: Man, sons sentenced to life imprisonment for murder

A court here has sentenced a man and his two sons to life imprisonment for murdering his brother four years ago. Additional District and Sessions Judge Umesh Chand last evening also imposed a fine of Rs 8,000 each on Harpal Singh and his sons Magan Kumar and Sogan Kumar, holding them guilty under sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Rishipal Singh was shot dead over a land dispute at Datiyana village in Muzaffarnagar district on August 9, 2014, according to the prosecution. Rishipal's son Sonu had lodged a complaint against them at Chapar police station.

Pakistan is expected to file a second counter-memorial in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on July 17, on the conviction of retired Indian naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was sentenced to death in April last year on charges of espionage and terrorism.Pakistan's top attorney, Khawar Qureshi, had briefed caretaker Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk last week, sources told The Express Tribune.Attorney General for Pakistan, Khalid Javed Khan, and other senior officials also attended the meeting.
