A man fell down stairs only to be caught red-handed and thrashed to death allegedly by a mob in a failed theft attempt in North Delhi's Burari area, the police said today. The incident took place yesterday when two men allegedly entered the house of a Burari resident at around 1:30 pm. "Two men allegedly entered a house in Burari for theft. However, as the duo executed their plan, the house owner returned and caught them red-handed," a senior police officer said. "The owner then raised an alarm when the two men tried to escape. During the melee, one of them, identified as Birbal, slipped from stairs as he tried to run towards the roof of the building," he said. The police would now ascertain whether three members of the family, whose hands were found loosely tied with rope, hanged themselves after tying others or they tried to free themselves. The bodies of 10 members of the family were found hanging from an iron mesh attached to the ceiling on July 1, while that of Narayan Devi was found lying on the floor in another room of the house. Six alleged drug peddlers, including a policeman, were arrested and over 75 kg of poppy seized from them in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said today. The policeman along with an associate were arrested after 50 kilograms of poppy straw was recovered from their vehicle at the Murgi Chowk in Gangyal area of Jammu this afternoon, the police officials said. They said a police team was busy checking when a private vehicle coming from Narwal towards Kunjwani Chowk tried to break the 'naka' but was chased and stopped. A 17-year-old boy allegedly hanged himself while video chatting with his girlfriend on Whatsapp at Baruipur area in South 24 Parganas district, police said today. The boy, a class XI student, took this step last night probably after quarrelling with his girlfriend during the chat, he said adding that the boy used to stay in a rented accommodation. "As he did not come out in the morning, his friends broke open the door and found him hanging from the ceiling. They informed us. The boy was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead on arrival," the officer said. A complaint against the girl has been lodged by the family members of the boy, he added.
The police today booked ten members of a village community in the neighbouring Bundi district for allegedly declaring a five-year-old scheduled caste girl an "outcast" and depriving her of proper food, care and shelter, an official said. West Bengal CID has busted a sex racket and rescued five minor girls from a guest house in Konnagar in Hooghly district, a senior officer said today. Two managers of the guest house, and two pimps - a man and a woman - were arrested in this connection, he said. "We have received information that commercial sexual exploitation involving minor girls was being carried out in a guest house at Konnagar. The Law Ministry is learnt to have forwarded names of 69 candidates to the Supreme Court collegium for appointment as high court judges. According to established procedure, the high court collegiums send names of candidates shortlisted by them to the Law Ministry, which in turns forwards these to the SC collegium for a final call. The Law Ministry attaches IB reports about the candidates before forwarding the names to the SC collegium. The 69 names have been recommended by collegiums of 23 high courts. Once the recommendations reach the SC collegium, it will take a final call and going by precedents, nearly 40 per cent of the names recommended by high courts are rejected by it. This year, 34 judges have been appointed in the 24 high courts. In 2016, 126 high court judges were appointed, which the government claims was the highest since independence. Average appointments of high court judges have been 86 per year.
Four Myanmarese nationals, including three women, suspected to be Rohingyas, were arrested in West Bengal for allegedly entering India illegally, police said today. The four were arrested yesterday by officers of Habra police station from the state's North 24 Parganas district, police said, adding that two children were accompanying them. According to police, the group was seen roaming suspiciously in the Maslandapur bus sand area here on Tuesday afternoon. Upon detaining them, the police found out that they had crossed the border illegally and immediately arrested the four adults under The Foreigners Act. Police today arrested a woman, her paramour, and his friend in connection with the killing of her physically-challenged husband here. Body of Sheikh Rashid was found by the roadside in Kalamb Chowk on March 18. Sheikh's wife had alleged that he was mowed down by a vehicle. On a tip-off, police today arrested Firoza Bano (40), her paramour Mohd Aizaz Mod Qureshi (29) and the latter's friend Imrajuddin Sadikuddin Sayed (42), a police official said. A 40-year-old woman was allegedly raped in a jungle in Birbhum district, police said today. The incident happened under the jurisdiction Mohammad Bazar police station area yesterday when the woman had gone to the forest to collect dry leaves, the police said. She was found in the forest in an unconscious state today, a police officer said, adding, she was later admitted to Suri hospital. The tribal woman and her family lodged a complaint of rape with the police, the officer said. "Three persons were arrested on the basis of the compliant," a senior police officer said. A 15-year-old tribal girl was allegedly raped by two men in an empty railway coach at Katni railway station, police said today. The accused, identified as Shivam (26) and Yashwant (27), have been arrested, a police official said. According to police, the teenager was "sold" to Shivam for Rs 25,000 by her maternal aunt. Katni's Government Railway Police station assistant sub-inspector Harinarayan Trivedi said the girl was living with her aunt in Sidhi town following a tiff with her mother. Lt Governor Anil Baijal today directed the Delhi Police to regularly monitor crimes against minors, including an analysis of quality of prosecution in such cases. Baijal also advised the force that security audit of IT system must be regularly conducted so as to prevent any misuse of data. The directions were issued at a law and order meeting, chaired by Baijal, to review crime situation in the national capital. The meeting was attended by Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik, special commissioners and joint commissioners.
