Woman motorcycle coach ends life by hanging herself

A 27-year-old woman motorcycle coach allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence in suburban Goregaon, police said today. The woman, Chetna Pandit, used to stay with her brother, who was not at home when the incident took place last night, a senior police official said. "At the time of the incident, her brother had gone out. But when he returned home, he found her hanging and alerted the police," senior inspector of Dindoshi police station Rajaram Vanmane said. A suicide note was recovered from the spot, police said. "The note said that she was a very ambitious woman, but since she was unable to achieve her goals she was taking the extreme step. It also mentioned that nobody should be held responsible for her death," police said. A case of accidental death has been registered and further investigation into the case is underway, police said.

No step taken by Govt to check Delhi's groundwater depletion: SC

The Supreme Court today came down heavily on the Centre, the Delhi government and their civic bodies for not taking any step to tackle the "serious problem" of groundwater depletion in the national capital. The apex court perused a NITI Aayog report which said that various authorities were passing the buck and shying away from their responsibility. "You are doing nothing to reduce water consumption, there is no plan for recharge and preservation of groundwater," a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta said. It asked the Centre for immediate, intermediary and long term measures to check the depletion of Delhi's groundwater. The apex court had on May 8 expressed grave concern on "over-exploitation" of groundwater in most parts of Delhi and asked the authorities to avert a crisis, saying the situation was "semi-critical". It had then perused a report filed by the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) on the status of groundwater level in Delhi from May 2000 till May 2017 and said .

Kerala HC rejects pre-arrest bail pleas of 3 priests accused of rape

The Kerala High Court today rejected the anticipatory bail petitions of three priests of a church accused of raping a woman, ruling that the charges against them were serious and the relief, if granted at an early stage of investigation, will adversely affect its progress. The priests--Abraham Varghese alias Sony, Job Mathew and Jaise K George-- had approached the court soon after the crime branch of Kerala Police slapped rape charges against four of the five Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church priests, who were accused of sexually exploiting the victim. Dismissing their bail pleas, Justice R Vijayaraghavan of the Kochi bench of the court said allegations against them were serious and that their release at a time when the probe was at a preliminary stage would hamper its progress. Earlier, the court had directed police to produce before it the complaint of sexual harassment of the woman filed by her husband and other documents related to the case. In their bail applications, the priests .

Retd Captain gets 7 yrs rigorous jail in 2006 Navy War Room leak case

A Delhi court today awarded seven-year rigorous imprisonment to retired Captain Salam Singh Rathore in an offshoot of the 2006 Navy War Room leak case, saying he did not deserve leniency as he has committed an offence against national security. Special CBI Judge S K Aggarwal handed down the jail term to Rathore for the offence of spying under the Official Secrets Act, saying the documents found in his possession belonged to Defence Ministry and were "directly or indirectly useful to the enemy in one way or the other". The other accused in the case - Commander (Retd) Jarnail Singh Kalra- was acquitted by the court. While awarding the sentence to Rathore, the court considered the submission of the prosecutor that several secret documents were recovered from the possession of Rathore which he could not account for. HC acquits man of 'unsound mind' in murder case

The Bombay High Court has acquitted a 41-year-old man in a murder case, observing that he was of an "unsound mind" and could not be held liable for his actions. A bench of Justices B R Gavai and Sarang Kotwal took into consideration the man's acquittal in another case in which he was charged with murder in 2001, after he pleaded that he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. The court rejected the prosecution's argument that if the man was acquitted, he might commit a third murder. The bench had last month acquitted the man, a resident of Mira Road in the neighbouring Thane district, while hearing a petition filed by him. The man had challenged an order of the Thane sessions court sentencing him to life imprisonment in 2013. While quashing and setting aside the sessions court's order, the high court said, "...the appellant was incapable of knowing the nature of the act by reason of unsoundness of his mind and thus, is entitled to benefit of section 84 (act of a person of ...

Michael Jackson was 'chemically castrated' by Joe Jackson, alleges doctor

Michael Jackson was "chemically castrated" by his father and Jackson family patriarch, Joe, to maintain his high-pitched voice, the singer's controversial doctor has alleged. Conrad Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in Michael Jackson's death in 2009 following which he spent two years in prison, made the allegations in a video released by The Blast. He called Joe, who died last month at the age of 89, "one of the worst fathers to his children in history". Murray, 65, claimed that Michael confided in him about the "many sufferings at the hands of his father" and said he hopes that the late patriarch is finding "redemption in hell". "The fact that he was chemically castrated to maintain his high-pitched voice is beyond words," Murray said in the video clip. "I would not shed a single tear for the passing of this cruel and evil man," he added. In 2010, Joe Jackson had filed a lawsuit for wrongful death against Murray, but he later dropped the suit.

Surviving member of German neo-Nazi murder cell jailed for life

The only surviving member of a German neo-Nazi cell behind a string of racist murders was today sentenced to life in prison, capping a mammoth trial that began in May 2013. Beate Zschaepe, 43, was found guilty of 10 counts of murder in deadly shootings of nine Turkish and Greek-born immigrants as well as a German policewoman carried out by a trio known as the National Socialist Underground (NSU). Although life imprisonment in Germany typically means 15 years behind bars as prisoners are often released for good conduct, Zschaepe would not be eligible for parole as judge Manfred Goetzl imposed the maximum sentence due to the "exceptional severity of the crime". Police say the NSU's two male members -- Zschaepe's former lovers Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Boehnhardt -- carried out their killing spree from 2000 to 2007, before they died in an apparent suicide pact following a bungled bank heist in 2011. Meanwhile Ralf Wohlleben, a former member of the far-right NPD party and accused of having ...

Seoul grounds Korean Air dynasty's academic flight

Korean Air's chairman was disqualified from heading an academic foundation by the government today and his son stripped of his degree in the latest woes to assail the dynasty. Cho Yang-ho's wife and daughters were already being investigated over alleged assaults, smuggling and illegal hiring of foreign housekeepers. The two younger women, who held management positions at Korean Air, became viral sensations for temper tantrums dubbed the "nut rage" and "water rage" scandals online. And the flag carrier's 69-year-old patriarch was himself grilled by prosecutors late last month over alleged tax evasion and other crimes. Today the education ministry withdrew its approval of Cho as head of the Jungseok-Inha School Foundation, which controls Inha University in Incheon, citing a spate of irregularities. It also asserted that the school's admission and graduation of Cho's son Cho Won-tae, now the Korean Air president, were flawed and cancelled his bachelor's degree. The son was allegedly ...

Man-eater leopard shot dead

A female leopard suspected to be a man-eater was shot dead in the early hours today in Motichur range of Rajaji Tiger Reserve in Uttarakhand, an official said. Aged about 6-7 years, the female leopard was shot dead at around 3.30 am when it was spotted walking with a limp near Khand village where people displaced by the Tehri dam reside, RTR Director Sanatan Sonkar said. On close examination its right paw was found to be severed which made it walk with a limp, he said. The disability may also have been the reason why the big cat had become a man-eater instead of hunting in the forests for prey, Sonkar said. The RTR authorities have a strong suspicion that the female leopard killed today had claimed a number of victims in villages neighbouring the reserve. The order to kill the suspected man-eater leopards was issued by the then wildlife warden DVS Khati through a letter dated May 21, 2018, which also authorised Dehradun resident Prashant Singh as the hunter for the purpose, Sonkar ...
