Ker HC rejects anticipatory bail pleas of 3 priests in sexual

The Kerala High Court today dismissed the anticipatory bail applications of three priests of Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church accused of sexually assaulting a woman. The priests, Abraham Varghese alias Sony varghese, Job Mathew and Jaise K George, had approached the court soon after the Crime Branch wing of Kerala Police slapped rape charges against four of the five Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church priests, including them, in the case. Dismissing their bail pleas, Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan said serious allegations had been raised against the accused. If anticipatory bail was granted at this stage, it would adversely affect the investigation, which was at a preliminary stage, the court said. Earlier, the court had directed the police to produce the complaint of sexual harassment of the woman, filed by her husband and other documents related to the case. 8-year-old boy dies in dog attack in UP

An 8-year-old boy died after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs here, officials said today. The incident took place in Nandosi village under Ceebeeganj police station when the boy was going to a temple yesterday. On hearing the shrieks of the boy, people rushed towards him and chased away the canines, but the severely injured child breathed his last at a private nursing home, they said. District Magistrate Birendra Kumar Singh has sought a detailed report on the incident from ADM, Sadar. The latest incident has brought back memories of the death of 13 children in such attacks in Sitapur district in the last six months.

Nigerian held with heroin in Punjab's Phagwara

A Nigerian national was arrested and 8 grams of heroin was seized from his possession near Law Gate Maheru colony here, the police said today. Alex Junior Obomanu, 20, presently living in a rented accommodation in the colony, 7 kilometres from here, is a former student of a private university in the area, Station House Officer (SHO), Satnampura police station, Inspector Narinder Singh Aujla said. Obomanu was arrested under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said. He was produced before a court here yesterday which sent him to judicial custody till July 24, Aujla said. The Nigerian Embassy in Delhi, the office of the External Affairs Ministry and the District Departmental office of the Foreigners Registration Office (FRO) were informed about his arrest, the SHO said. Aujla said the police were verifying whether Obomanu carried a valid visa or if he was overstaying.

Vera Farmiga, John Leguizamo to star in Ava DuVernay's 'Central Park Five'

Vera Farmiga and John Leguizamo have come aboard the cast of Ava DuVernay's project "Central Park Five". The limited series by Netflix, will be written and directed by DuVernay. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will also feature Michael Kenneth Williams in a pivotal role. The four-episode show is based on the case of five teenagers of colour who were wrongly convicted for the rape of a jogger in 1989. When they are exonerated after 25 years, they sue the city for their time in prison. Retired captain sent to jail for 7 yrs in 2006 Navy War Room leak case

A Delhi court today awarded seven-year rigorous imprisonment to retired captain Salam Singh Rathore in an offshoot of the 2006 Navy War Room leak case, saying he had committed the offence against national security. Special CBI Judge S K Aggarwal handed down the jail term to Rathore for the offence of spying under the Official Secrets Act. The judge convicted the accused under Section 3(1) C of the 1923 Official Secrets Act, but acquitted another accused, Commander (retired) Jarnail Singh Kalra, in the case. The court, while awarding the sentence, considered the submission of the prosecutor that several secret documents were recovered from the possession of Rathore which he could not account for.

Anganwadi worker puts chilli powder in toddler's mouth

In a horrific incident, an attendant at an Anganwadi centre allegedly put chilli powder in the mouth of a kid to stop him from crying.The incident reportedly took place on Monday in Krishna district's Bhushanagulla village in Andhra Pradesh.The victim's mother, as part of the daily routine, left her son at the centre. The toddler was refusing to go to the Anganwadi centre, but his mother dropped him there while he was still crying.After failing to calm down the child, an attendant named Kumari started shouted at him before she stuffed the boy's mouth with the chilli powder.The locals and parents of children in the centre have complained to the officials.

Denied hearse van, MP man takes mother's body on motorcycle

In yet another case of lack of medical facilities, a man was forced to carry the body of his mother on a motorcycle for post-mortem.The woman, identified as Kunwar Bai, died on Monday due to a snake bite. Her family then informed a district hospital in Mohangarh for a post-mortem to be conducted.However, the hospital allegedly denied sending a hearse van for the deceased.Thereafter, Kunwar Bai's son and her relatives brought her body on a motorcycle to the hospital for the post-mortem to be conducted, a video of which was widely circulated on social media.An official of the district administration has demanded an inquiry into the matter."I was not aware of this incident, however, I have asked for an inquiry into the matter. Bareilly: Triple Talaq victim dies after month-long torture

A Triple Talaq victim, who was allegedly thrashed and confined to a room without food for a month by her husband, died during medical treatment on Tuesday.According to Razia's sister, the victim, who has a six-year-old child, got divorced from her husband over the phone. Subsequently, she was locked inside the room without any food or water and was thrashed by her husband for dowry."After locking her for a month in the house, he left her at a relative's house. I got her home as soon as I was informed. We went to the police to report the incident. However, the police didn't register any case," she said.Founder of NGO Mera Haq, Farhat Naqvi, told ANI that Razia's husband Nahim was married before and that he tortured his first wife in the same way."Razia was admitted to the district hospital. SC hearing on Section 377 to continue today

The Supreme Court on Wednesday will continue hearing a batch of petitions against Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which criminalises homosexual activities.During the previous hearing on Monday, a five-judge Constitutional bench had refused to adjourn the hearing after the Centre sought more time to file its reply.The Centre requested the court to adjourn the hearing and sought four weeks to file its reply to the petitions.The bench, led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, however, refused and listed it for today.Earlier in 2009, the Delhi High Court had decriminalised Section 377, but the order was later set aside by a Supreme-Court bench.Section 377 deals with "unnatural offences," and holds "whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to ten years, and shall also be liable to fine.

Ex-Panama President Martinelli hospitalised before hearing

The family and lawyers for former Panama President Ricardo Martinelli called again for his release from jail after he was hospitalised for a second time since his extradition from the United States last month. A judge suspended a hearing yesterday at which Martinelli was supposed to appear. His wife, Marta de Martinelli, said he was hospitalised Monday evening with high blood pressure and other problems. She said the stress of pre-trial confinement and the hearings are jeopardising his health. So far the courts have not agreed to free him pending trial. Martinelli was president from 2009 to 2014 and is facing charges of illegally intercepting communications and embezzlement among others. He denies any wrongdoing.

8-yr-old raped in Amethi

An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped by some unidentified persons in Hardoiya village here, police said today. The minor was admitted to a nearby hospital, but due to lack of medical facility she was later referred to Trauma Centre in Lucknow. Her condition is stated to be critical, the police said. On the complaint of her grand father, the police have lodged an FIR against some unidentified persons and investigation is on, the Station House Officer at Musafirkhana, PN Singh, said. In a separate incident, a 24-year-old man was allegedly shot dead by two assailants in Pichhuti village today. Manjeet Singh was attacked when he was out to attend nature's call, the police said. On complaint of family members of the deceased, an FIR was lodged against two persons, the police said, adding that the accused will be arrested soon.

HC stays criminal defamation proceedings against journalist

The Delhi High Court today stayed the criminal defamation proceedings initiated by BJP spokesperson Tajinder Singh Bagga against a journalist. According to the counsel for journalist Swati Chaturvedi, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva granted the interim relief to the scribe, who has sought quashing of the criminal proceedings against her by Bagga. Advocate Pranav Sachdeva, appearing for Chaturvedi, said the court has stayed the trial court proceedings. Chaturvedi was summoned by the trial court as accused in the matter on May 17 and was asked to appear before it on July 12. Bagga had filed a defamation complaint against Chaturvedi for her tweet on his appointment as a BJP spokesperson.

Customs seizes gold worth over Rs 2 crore at Mumbai airport

Customs officials have seized gold worth over Rs 2 crore at the international airport here in the last two days and arrested four persons, including two Sudanese women. Acting on specific inputs, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs intercepted an Indian passenger Hafiz Abdurrub upon his arrived from Dubai by a spicejet flight today, the Customs said in a release. The officials recovered crude gold bars weighing 1.936 kg which were concealed in his undergarments. During his interrogation, Abdurrub spilled beans on his accomplice Sheq Irfan. The AIU sleuths found three gold bars weighing 1 kg each from the pocket of Irfan's trousers, it said. The collective value of seized gold from the two passengers was Rs 1,37,95,455, it said. Similarly, search of two Sudanese women passengers resulted in the recovery of 12 gold bars, concealed in their private parts yesterday. The women had arrived from Sharjah by an Air Arabia flight. Orissa HC reserves order on convicted IAS officer's plea

The Orissa High Court today reserved its order on a petition filed by convicted IAS officer Vinod Kumar seeking quashing of a non-bailable warrant issued against him by a vigilance court in a corruption case. On July 6, Kumar had challenged in the high court the conviction order and issuance of the warrant against him. He had stated that the lower court had passed its judgement without hearing him. Justice J P Dash after hearing the petitioner reserved the order, which is likely to be pronounced on July 19. Till then, the high court gave an interim protection to Kumar directing the vigilance police not to arrest him. The special vigilance court in Bhubaneswar recently found Kumar guilty of financial irregularities to the tune of Rs 55 lakh during his tenure as managing director of Odisha Rural Housing Development Corporation in 2000. Woman catches bag snatcher, hands him over to police

In an act of bravery, a 22-year-old woman caught a thief trying to steal items from her bag and handed him over to the police in east Delhi's Pandav Nagar area, an official said today. CBI arrests 2 from Ajmer in connection with economic offence in Mumbai

Two persons have been arrested by the CBI from Ajmer in connection with a case related to economic offences in Mumbai, police said today. Those who were arrested have been identified as Anil Kumar Toshniwal and Anil Kumar Sharma, Ajmer police said. It was a case related with economic offence lodged under relevant sections including 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC, the police said. Two persons have been arrested by a CBI team which came from Mumbai. The team had sought assistance from the local police which was provided, SP Ajmer Rajendra Singh said.
