SNDP Yogam office-bearers accused of SHG funds fraud in Ker

A case was today filed against SNDP Yogam General Secretary Vellappally Natesan and his son Thushar Vellapally, whose political outfit is part of the NDA, for allegedly swindling Rs 1.54 crore using fake self-help groups, police said. SNDP is a social organisation of the numerically strong backward Ezhava community in the state and Thushal Vellappally is its vice-president besides heading the Bharat Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS), a key partner of the BJP-led NDA. The case was registered based on a complaint from Divakaran and Sudharshan, both native of Chengannur in the district, police said. Six other SNDP local unit officer-bearers including Ratheesh Kumar, Anil P Sreerangam and K K Maheshan, have also been named as accused in the FIR, police said. Delhi court holds ex-diplomat guilty of spying for Pakistan's ISI

Former diplomat Madhuri Gupta, who had served at the Indian High Commission in Islamabad, was today convicted by a Delhi court for passing on sensitive information to Pakistan's ISI. Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma held the former diplomat guilty under various provisions of the Official Secrets (OS) Act for the offences of spying and wrongful communication of information protected under the law. The court would hear arguments on the quantum of sentence to be handed down to Gupta tomorrow. The court noted that the e-mails "passed on by the accused were categorically sensitive information which could have been useful to the enemy country which were strategically very important for the foreign policy of the country and its secrecy was of utmost important". Delhi court convicts diplomat for espionage

A Delhi Court on Friday convicted former Indian diplomat Madhuri Gupta in connection with an espionage case.She was the first woman diplomat to be arrested for espionage by the special cell of Delhi Police in 2010.Gupta was accused of leaking classified information to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).Earlier in 2016, the Delhi High Court charged Gupta under the stringent provisions of the Official Secrets Act which entailed a maximum punishment of up to 14 years.The court had set aside a Delhi trial court's order of January 2012, in which the diplomat was provided for a punishment of only three years.Gupta was arrested on April 22, 2010, by Delhi police's Special Cell from Islamabad, where she was posted as Second Secretary (Press and Information) of the Indian High Commission.As per reports, she was involved in a relationship with Jamshed, an ISI official, whom she planned to marry.

CBI probe in TN gutkha scam to ensure fair probe: SC

The Supreme Court today upheld a Madras High Court verdict ordering a CBI probe into the multi-crore rupee gutkha scam in which a minister and top state police officers and officials are alleged to be involved. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra dismissed an appeal filed by E Sivakumar, who was an officer in the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department at the time of the scam. He had moved the top court challenging the April 26 high court order. The apex court said the high court has "cogitated" over all issues in detail and the probe was transferred to the CBI to ensure fair investigation in the case. The case relates to an Income Tax Department raid in the offices, residences and godowns of a gutkha (a tobacco product) manufacturer in Tamil Nadu in 2016. A diary seized then allegedly listed bribe payments made to various officials. Man arrested for extorting money posing as sales tax dept official

A 42-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attempting to extort money from his acquaintances using international phone numbers and posing as an officer of the Sales Tax Department, the police said today. Three persons had been receiving text messages and videos on their WhatsApp numbers from an international number with the sender was claiming to be an official of the Sales Tax Department. The sender claimed that the complainants had committed tax irregularities by misdeclaration and not paying taxes, the police said. The sender also sent images and videos of government files to establish his credentials as a government official. Later, he started demanding a large amount of money from the complainants to settle the issue. Police zeroed down on the location of the suspect. ABVP, law students move HC challenging CLAT-2018

The Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and two law students today approached the Delhi High Court challenging the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) held recently and seeking direction to appoint an independent body for conducting the examination afresh. The plea sought quashing of the CLAT-2018, claiming mismanagement and incompetency of the national law universities in conducting the examination on a rotational basis. The petition, filed through advocate Namit Saxena, sought the court's intervention against the "inconsistent, negligent, sub-standard and inefficient implementation" of CLAT which was held by its working committee, implementation committee and the National University of Advanced Legal Studies on May 13. The exam is conducted for the purpose of admission to undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in law offered at premier national law schools of the country. Punjab CM orders crackdown against illegal travel agents

The Punjab government has directed top civil and police officials to identify unregistered travel agents and take stern penal and legal action against them. Orders in this regard were issued by Punjab Home Secretary N S Kalsi on the chief minister's directive, an official spokesman said today. Top officials have been directed to crackdown on illegal travel agents through a series of measures to ensure strict compliance with laws and legislations governing the licensing and operations of such agents, he said. The measures include regularly updating the list of all the licensed and registered travel agents and conducting their physical verification at least once every year, the spokesman said. UP police sets up cybercrime coordination cell

The Uttar Pradesh Police has set up a coordination cell in compliance with the Union home ministry advisory to check cybercrime. The state cybercrime coordination cell will be led by an inspector general of the special task force (STF), said Praveen Kumar, deputy inspector general (law and order). The district-level cybercells will be constituted under the ASP (crime) or deputy superintendent of police (crime), Kumar told media persons here. 18 UP cops transfered over 'bribe rate card'

The Uttar Pradesh police today shunted out 18 personnel from their Noida crime branch and ordered an inquiry after a WhatsApp message "exposed" their "bribe rate card". The allegations raised in the message are "serious", Deputy Inspector General (Law and Order) Pravin Kumar said. Kumar was asked by reporters at his daily briefing here to comment on the WhatsApp message circulating on social media, which purportedly carried details on how bribes in a particular case were to be shared. The DIG said the superintendent of police (city) has been ordered to look into the matter in detail. The person from whose phone the message appeared to have been sent has denied doing so, Kumar said. Delhi HC sets aside EC decision disqualifying MP minister

The Delhi High Court today set aside the Election Commission's (EC) decision to disqualify Madhya Pradesh minister Narottam Mishra on charges of paid news, saying there was no proof to show he incurred expenses, directly or indirectly, on news articles favouring him. A bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Sunil Gaur allowed the plea of Mishra, the state Minister of Public Relations, Water Resources and Parliamentary Affairs, challenging the poll panel's June 23, 2017 decision disqualifying him. The EC had also held him guilty of filing wrong accounts of election expenses relating to the articles and advertorials in the media during the 2008 assembly polls in the state. The poll panel's order had come on a complaint by Congress leader Rajendra Bharti, who had contested against Mishra in the elections in which the BJP leader had won. Rajasthan served NHRC notice over alleged brutalities against Dalits

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Rajasthan government over alleged police brutality against Dalits in the wake of the April 2 nationwide shutdown, a spokesperson said today. The right's panel took suo moto cognizance of media reports alleging that several Dalits, falsely implicated in criminal cases, were jailed with no provision of bail even after six weeks of confinement. Several incidents of abuse of power by the police on women and children were reported from the state, the panel said. Citing media reports, the commission said a CRPF jawan, posted in Srinagar, who had come to attend to his sick mother, was allegedly dragged out of his house by the police on April 2. The Enforcement Directorate has summoned at least four members of absconding diamantaire Nirav Modi's family, including his father and brother, and his US-based business partner in connection with a money laundering case linked to the over USD 2 billionPNB fraud, officials said today. The family members are required to be questioned as a number of financial transactions and Nirav Modi's businesses are linked to them, they said. Punjab cop arrested for bribery

Sleuths of the vigilance bureau today arrested an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police from Tarn Taran town while accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000, an official spokesperson said. ASI Angrej Singh, posted at the Sarai Amanat Khan police station, was arrested red handed based on a complaint filed by Mandeep Singh of Boosey village, he added. The complainant had approached the bureau, alleging that the accused was demanding Rs 5,000 for his help in a case, the spokesman said, adding that he had previously handed over Rs 1,500 to the ASI as bribe. After verification, a trap was laid and the accused ASI was arrested while accepting the bribe of Rs 3,000 from the complainant, he said. Kasauli firing: Magisterial probe indicts police for lapses

The magisterial inquiry into the deaths of an assistant town planner and a PWD employee during a demolition drive in Kasauli has indicted the police for lapses, sources said. The 133-page report was submitted by Secretary (Youth Services and Sports) Dinesh Malhotra, who headed the panel, to Additional Chief Secretary (Home) B K Aggarwal.
