A CBI court here today awarded life imprisonment to two persons for murdering a man 17 years ago allegedly for marrying a Muslim in Kasargod district. Balakrishnan was murdered on September 18, 2001 near the Chandragiri bridge in Kasaragod. A Delhi court today denied bail to journalist Upendra Rai, arrested by the CBI for his alleged involvement in dubious financial transactions. Special CBI Judge Santosh Snehi Mann denied the relief to Rai noting that the investigation was at its initial stage. The court noted the CBI's submission that the time period was very less to complete investigation as the magnitude of the crime was very large. The CBI also told the court that if he was granted bail, Rai could tamper with the evidence. In his application, Rai had claimed that no purpose would be served by keeping him in further custody. He had claimed he was not required for further custodial interrogation since the CBI's plea for this was rejected by the court on May 9. Four members of a family were today found dead at their rented house near Ettumanoor in the district, police said. The deceased have been identified as 42-year-old Sinoj, his wife Nisha (35) and two sons, aged 12 and seven, they said. Preliminary investigations suggest that Sinoj hanged himself after killing his wife and sons, police said. While his 12-year-old son's body was found hanging from a bathroom window, bodies of his wife and younger son were found lying in a bed in the bedroom. Their relative, a differently abled boy, was with them when the alleged incident occurred in the early hours today, but he was not aware about it, police said. Five people were arrested on the charges of betting on the IPL match between Hyderabad and Bengaluru here in the district, police said today. Acting on a tip-off, police yesterday arrested Mohammad Aslam, Surendra Singh, Narayan Singh, Surendra and Sarvesh for betting in the IPL match last night, SHO (Kotwali) Mahaveer Singh said. A 21-year-old man was today arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a minor girl here, police said. The accused Ajith Kumar was in love with the 17-year-old victim for the past one year and misbehaved with her by promising to marry her, they said. The girl's mother lodged a complaint with the all-woman police, who booked a case against Ajith Kumar under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012 and arrested him.

The Jammu and Kashmir State Vigilance Organisation (SVO) has registered an FIR against alleged irregularities in issuance and renewal of arms licences by authorities across the state. Arms licences issued and renewed between 2012 and 2016 would be looked into, an SVO officer said. A complaint was received that claimed licences were being issued by the district authorities in lieu of monetary considerations and in connivance with private persons, he said. "The licensing authorities have brazenly flouted the norms, procedure and rules governing the subject in lieu of monetary considerations by abuse of their official positions as public servants, which in turn, discloses commission of criminal misconduct by them," the officer said.

The Supreme Court collegium has favoured "further deliberation" and "broad-based consideration" of names of Chief Justices of various high courts before sending its decision reiterating the elevation of Uttarakhand Chief Justice K M Joseph as a judge of the top court. The resolution of the May 16 collegium meeting, uploaded on the apex court website today, stated that there was need for deliberation on bringing the judges from the high courts, which are not represented, to the Supreme Court. Two brothers have been sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court in connection with a murder case of 2010. Additional Districts Sessions judge Ombir Singh has held Afser, Bholi guilty of killing Naseem under section 302 of the IPC. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 each on the accused persons. A minor girl was allegedly beaten to death by her stepmother over a family dispute at Hath Choya village in the neighbouring Shamli district, police said today.
