Three persons, including a fitness centre owner in Mumbra, have been booked on the charge of culpable homicide after a 12-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool, police said today. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, they said. "The boy, Ayan Khan, had gone to Future Fitness Gym and Swimming Pool along with his cousin. However, he drowned while swimming in the deeper part of the pool," police said. The gym and swimming pool is owned by Aziz Faruqi. Along with Faruqi, the caretaker of the swimming pool Huzoor Khan alias Lal and trainer Sayyed Hussain have also been booked under IPC section 304 (2) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). The case was registered following a complaint lodged by the minor's aunt. None of the accused have been arrested so far in this connection, police said adding that further investigation is on.

A Thane court acquitted a driver in a case of alleged killing of a dubbing artist from the film industry in 2013, while giving him benefit of doubt. District Jugde P P Jadhav, in his order last week, observed that the prosecution failed to prove the charges under IPC section 302 (murder) against Sonu Singh (33). The prosecution told the court that the deceased, Seema Maison, her husband and their son lived in an apartment in Mira Road area of the district. Singh worked as a driver in a company where Maison's husband worked. On January 2, 2013 the dubbing artist did not go to work as she was unwell and informed her husband about it. Her husband, the complainant in the case, asked the driver to visit the former's house and enquire about the artist, as he was unable to reach her on mobile phone. The Delhi High Court today granted bail to lawyer Rohit Tandon, who is in jail in connection with a money laundering case post demonetisation, and another accused in the case, saying trial in the matter was likely to take time. Justice Mukta Gupta granted the relief to Tandon and co-accused Raj Kumar Goel, a data entry operator, subject to their furnishing a personal bond of Rs 5 lakh each with two sureties of the like amount to the satisfaction of the trial court. The order came on Tandon's plea challenging the trial court's order denying him bail on the grounds that he is alleged to have been involved in a "white collar crime" with other co-accused in a "well-planned" manner. Goel has been accused of engaging in earning profits by routing money into various accounts by using forged documents. Both have been in custody for more than one year and four months, the high court noted in its order.
A 53-year-old business man was shot dead by an unknown person at Dharmapuri temple town in neighbouring Jagtial district, police said today. The incident occurred last night when Podeti Satyanarayana Goud was proceeding to Mumbai after attending a function in the district last night, they said. The deceased, who runs a liquor business in Mumbai had come here to attend a function. While returning in his car, he was shot dead by unidentified man at about 10.45 pm, police said. Based on a complaint from his friend, a case of murder was registered. Goud was a Congress party worker, they said adding efforts are on to arrest the culprit.

Customs officials have seized 52 gold biscuits valued at Rs 269 lakh from Mizoram and arrested two Myanmar nationals in this connection, a senior customs official said. Superintendent of the anti-smuggling unit of the Aizawl customs division, L H Haokip said, acting on a tip-off, the customs officials intercepted a car at Seling customs checkgate on Tuesday and seized the gold bars, weighing eight kilogramme, from the possession of the two persons. The Seling customs checkgate is located 40 kilometre from the state capital. The two persons were identified as David Muangpi (23) and Somkhankap (19) -- residents of Sanmeuh Kawlpi and Tahan areas of Myanmar respectively. A 40-year-old man, who sustained severe burn injuries after an ambulance he was sleeping in caught fire in south Delhi's Sheikh Sarai area, succumbed today, police said. Two men, Rahul and Guddu, were charred to death on the intervening night of May 7 and 8, they added. Subodh was admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital with over 90 per cent burn injuries and died, police said. The three persons were employees of the Rana Ambulance Service in Khanpur, police said, adding that they would burn egg trays to keep mosquitoes at bay and it was suspected that the fire started from the trays. Police had said a case was registered against unidentified persons in connection with the incident.
A local court today sentenced M Bhanu Kiran, the prime accused in a case relating to the murder of a faction leader, and three others in a 2009 case for possession of illegal country made firearms, to one year simple imprisonment. The Gujarat High Court today adjourned the pronouncement of quantum of sentence of three convicts in the 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre case, after they prayed for an opportunity to make fresh arguments. The division bench of Justices Harsha Devani and A S Supehia kept the matter for hearing on June 15 after the convicts made a submission that they were not properly represented, and needed their lawyers to argue afresh on the quantum of sentence. P J Rajput, Rajkumar Chumal and Umesh Bharwad had been acquitted by the special SIT trial court along with 29 others in the verdict in 2012. However, the high court, while hearing appeals, found these three guilty, while it upheld the acquittal of 29 others. It had reserved the order on quantum of sentence for these three today.
