The Delhi High Court today dismissed the Centre's plea challenging Vodafone's move of initiating international arbitration against India under the India-UK Bilateral Investment Protection Agreement (BIPA) in connection with a tax demand of Rs 11,000 crore under a retrospective law of 2012. The high court, however, granted liberty to the government to raise the issue of "abuse of process" before the India-United Kingdom BIPA tribunal. A 24 year-old woman from Kerala has been rescued after being under "illegal confinement" in a house here following her mother's objection to her relationship with a Muslim youth, police said. Hailing from Thrissur in Kerala, the woman was kept under illegal confinement at the rented house of a local BJP leader for the last one year, they said adding a case had been registered against her mother. Police rescued the woman last week following investigations after she posted a video on the social media about her plight two months ago. The woman, whose father had died a few years ago, had fallenin love with a Muslim youth, which was opposed by her mother, who brought her to Mangaluru and left her in the 'care' of the BJP leader last year, police said. Goa Polices Special Investigation Team (SIT) today questioned Govindraj Dempo, son-in-law of former chief minister Digambar Kamat, in connection with a mining scam it is probing. Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Karthik Kashyap said, "Dempo was questioned about shell companies both in India and abroad with accounts linked to foreign banks." He said that Dempo, a businessman, was questioned for two hours. The SIT, set up by Goa Police's Crime Branch, is investigating a complaint filed in July 2013 by the state Mines and Geology department. The complaint sought to fix criminal liability on those involved in illegal mining, as pointed out by various committees, including the Justice M B Shah Commission appointed by the Centre. The Crime Branch had registered an FIR in August 2013 against those named in the reports prepared by the Shah Commission as well as other committees. The Revenue Intelligence Directorate today seized gold weighing more than 5 kg from three NRIs at the Biju Patnaik International Airport here, official sources said. The market value of the seized gold is an estimated Rs 1.82 crore and was being carried in their footwear. Two Turkmenistan nationals have been arrested by officials of the Customs department for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valuing about Rs 95 lakh at the Delhi airport. The duo were intercepted after their arrival from Turkmenistan on Saturday. "Their personal and baggage search resulted in recovery of gold weighing 3.05 kgs, in the form of multiple gold rings interwined and crudely given the shape of chains, ingeniously concealed in a black cloth which was further wrapped on the waist line and around the neck of the two passengers," the Customs department said in a statement. The value of the seized gold is Rs 94.9 lakh. They have also admitted to having smuggled another 2.65 kgs of gold worth Rs 1.77 crore on their visits in the past, it said. A Delhi court today held ousted AAP MLA Devinder Shehrawat guilty of flouting election regulations during the campaign for 2013 assembly polls. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal convicted Shehrawat saying the prosecution was able to prove the case beyond reasonable doubts. The court has fixed May 14 for argument on the quantum of sentence. The police had filed an FIR on October 7, 2013 alleging that it had recovered several pamphlets bearing Shehrawat's name and photographs seeking votes, but no name of the publisher was mentioned in them. The case was registered under section 127A of Representation of the People Act, which says that no person shall print or publish any election pamphlet or poster which does not bear on its face the names and addresses of the printer and the publisher. A man who fled after stabbing to death his pregnant wife was arrested from Ambad area here, police said today. The incident took place on May 3 and the accused had been at large since then, an official said. Sariputra Punjaram Shinde (25), a construction worker hailing from Parbhani district, was arrested yesterday night following a tip-off that he would visit his house situated in Cidco's Pandit Nagar locality in Ambad here, an official said.
