Kathua victim's father welcomes SC decision on trial, says he has full faith in judiciary

The father of an eight-year-old girl who was gangraped and killed in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district today welcomed the Supreme Court decision to transfer the case to Pathankot and said he has full faith in the judiciary. The grieving father, belonging to a minority nomadic community which earns its livelihood by raising cattle, also said he has full faith in the government. Germany hunting 'Nazi grandma' as she skips jail

German police are hunting an 89-year-old grandmother convicted on several occasions for Holocaust denial, after she failed to turn herself in to serve her prison sentence. Ursula Haverbeck, dubbed "Nazi-Oma" (Nazi grandma) by German media, was convicted in October on eight counts of incitement and sentenced to two years in prison. But she did not report to prison to serve her sentence by the April 23 deadline. "After the convict failed to report to the relevant penal institution within the deadline, prosecutors in Verden on May 4, 2018 issued an order to execute the sentence and have charged police with its implementation," prosecutors said in a statement. Newly-married woman abducted

A newly-married woman was allegedly abducted by unidentified persons after beating up her husband when the couple was returning home from dinner in Panchvati area of Nashik on May 5, police said today. The alleged incident occurred near Lamkheda farm when Rokan Pokar (25), originally from Gujarat but currently settled in Nashik, was returning home on a motorcycle along with his wife, said Mhasrul police station incharge Subhashchandra Deshmukh. He said when the couple passed the farm, around 10 kms away from their house, a car came from behind and blocked their way. "Two men sitting in the car got down and assaulted Pokar and bundled the woman into their car before fleeing," Deshmukh said. On the basis of a complaint lodged by Pokar, police have fanned out teams to trace his wife, he added.

SC transfers Kathua case; rules out CBI probe

Supreme Court on Monday transferred the Kathua gangrape and murder case to Pathankot Court and also ruled that the matter does not warrant a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry.As per the top court, day-to-day hearings would take place in the matter along with in-camera proceedings, under the Pathankot district judge, with no scope for adjournment.Earlier in the day, the Jammu and Kashmir government told the Supreme Court that they were ready for fair trial in the case involving the alleged rape and murder of a minor in Kathua in January.Gopal Subramanian, a senior Supreme Court lawyer, appearing for the state of Jammu, told the apex court that the state was only concerned with the investigation and a fair trial. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today said the Supreme Court decision to shift the trial of the Kathua gangrape and murder case to Pathankot would boost the morale of the state police, which had left "no stone unturned" to ensure that the eight-year-old's family gets justice. Cop dies as assailants open fire in court complex to free accused

Assailants opened fire inside a court complex in Bhiwani district today during a failed bid to free a kidnapping accused, killing a Haryana police head constable, police said. Head constable Bhagirath sustained a bullet injury and died in the incident. Police nabbed two assailants while two others managed to escape, Superintendent of Police, Bhiwani, Ganga Ram Punia said over phone. The senior police official said that three to four armed persons barged into the court complex in Siwani town and opened fire as soon as the kidnapping accused, Jai Kumar alias Bhadar, and one more accused, Sunil, were about to board a prison van after being produced in court. "When the two were being escorted by the policemen towards a prison van in the court complex, 3-4 armed assailants opened fire in a bid to free Kumar ," he said. Court orders FIR against AAP leader for remarks against Gandhi,Nehru

A city court today directed the Delhi Police to register an FIR against Aam Aadmi Party leader Ashutosh for allegedly making "vulgar" statements against Mahatma Gandhi and former prime ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Jawaharlal Nehru in a blog in 2016. The court's direction came on a complaint seeking lodging of an FIR against Ashutosh for writing a blog with serious allegations against the former leaders to defend an ex-AAP MLA, whose name had cropped up in a sex scandal. Miscreants loot Rs 15 L from cashier of petrol pump in Rajasthan

Two motorcycle-borne miscreants today robbed Rs 15 lakh from the cashier of a petrol pump in Rajasthan's Churu district, police said. The cashier, Mahendra Kumar Sharma (48), along with his father Jagdish Sharma (60), was on his way to the petrol pump from his house in the Bidasar area when the accused hurled chili powder at them and robbed their bag containing Rs 15 lakh in cash, they said. Man attempts suicide in Kishtwar; stable

A 20-year-old man today attempted suicide by trying to slit his throat with knife in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district, police said. One Hassan Sheikh, son of Jamal Sheikh, hailing from West Bengal, temporarily residing near Bazar Masjid Kishtwar, attempted to cut his throat with a vegetable cutter, Senior Superintendent of Police Kishtwar Abrar Choudhary told PTI. He ruled out rumours of a murder. His younger brother, who was present at the spot, intervened and prevented him from slitting his throat by snatching the knife from his hand, the SSP said. On the alarm of the boy, people and police reached the spot and shifted Sheikh to a district hospital Kishtwar, where doctors treated upon him, he added. Acid thrown from taxi at passerby, six injured

Six persons, including five women in their early 20s, were injured when some unidentified persons allegedly threw some chemical, supposedly acid, at them from a moving taxi last night at Panditia Road in the southern part of the city, police said today. The victims were passersby and the incident took place around 9.30 pm last night, the police said. Locals chased the yellow taxi but the riders including the driver escaped leaving the vehicle behind, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said. "They (people in the car) attacked the people indiscriminately and randomly and no one was the target, in particular," he added. UP encounters killings: 50 down and still counting...

Undeterred by allegations of "fake encounters" by the opposition, the Uttar Pradesh Police under Yogi Adityanath's chief ministership has killed 50 dreaded criminals in as many encounters in the past over one year, officials said. The 50th case of a criminal being shot dead in an encounter, since the BJP government came to power last March, was on May 3 when notorious criminal Rehan, who was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 was gunned down in Muzaffarnagar district, they said. Rehan, an active member of Mukeen Kala gang, had 15 serious criminal cases against him, police officials said. Court extends journalist's CBI custody by 2 more days

Journalist Upendra Rai, arrested for his alleged involvement in dubious financial transactions, would remain in CBI custody for two more days, with a Delhi court today extending his remand. Special CBI Judge Santosh Snehi Mann extended the custody of Rai, who was produced before the court on the expiry of his three-day CBI remand, after the agency said he was non-cooperative and evasive in his replies. Public prosecutor Manoj Shukla, while seeking a seven-day remand, said some secretive and sensitive documents were recovered from him which were not supposed to be in the possession of a common man. He needs to be interrogated regarding procurement of these documents, the CBI's counsel said, adding that several new facts have come to light during the last three days which were to be probed. A departmental enquiry can be initiated against a judicial officer if there was verifiable material to substantiate the allegations, in the absence of a written complaint and an affidavit, the Bombay High Court has said. A division bench of Justices R M Savant and S V Kotwal on May 4 dismissed a petition filed by a civil judge (junior division), Asif Tahasildar, challenging an order of July 15, 2017 issued by the high court registrar, initiating departmental enquiry against him on two different charges. The first charge was for allegedly misusing the official position to cause wrongful gain for oneself and loss to the state exchequer, when Tahasildar was a civil judge in Jalna district. The second enquiry was initiated after Tahasildar allegedly assaulted a person and threatened to imprison him in a false case, when he was a judge in Kolhapur. Condition of Pakur rape victim stable

The condition of the minor girl, who was allegedly raped and set on fire by her neighbour in Pakur district, is stated to be stable as she was shifted to the Bokaro General Hospital. The condition of the girl is stable, who suffered 70 per cent burns, acting civil surgeon B K Singh said. The Supreme Court today vacated the stay on the trial of the Kathua gangrape and murder case and transferred it outside Jammu and Kashmir to Pathankot in Punjab. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra directed that the trial in the case should be held in-camera and ordered that the trial be fast-tracked and conducted on a day-to-day basis to avoid any delay. Thane civic body gets no HC relief over waste dumping matter

The Bombay High Court has refused to grant any relief to the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) that had challenged a local court order denying it permission to dump solid waste at a private plot of land. Justice Mridula Bhatkar, presiding over the appeal filed by the TMC, also rapped the civic body for persisting with the said litigation even though a civil judge and the district court in Thane had found that the corporation had illegally been dumping solid waste at the site. In an order passed last week, Justice Bhatkar reminded the corporation that it was a "public body" that must adopt a "citizen-friendly approach," and not act as a "hostile", private litigant when it came to issues of public interest. Farmer tied to tree, shot at in UP over money dispute

A farmer was tied to a tree and shot at in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district allegedly over some money dispute, police said. The farmer, 45-year-old Lokesh Kumar was shot at yesterday in Kutub Garh village in Shamli. He was shifted to a hospital in serious condition, they said. Police have registered a case against four people -- Rajesh, Dhiman, Rajkumar and one unidentified person who went absconding. The victim's son, in his complaint, alleged that the four miscreants opened fire on Kumar after tying him to a tree. Police suspect past enmity and monetary dispute behind the incident.
