A 35-year-old woman committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance allegedly due to harassment over demand for dowry in Muzaffarnagar's Shahpur town, police said today. Fehmida Begum took the extreme step yesterday after a dispute over the phone with her husband Javed, SHO, Kushalpal Singh said. The police registered a case against Javed and three others for abetment of suicide under section 306 of IPC (abetment of suicide). According to the complaint lodged by the deceased's brother, Javed had been pressuring Begum to demand more dowry from his in-laws. Javed stayed in Odisha for his business-related work. The accused is absconding and further probe into the case is on, police said. In a separate incident, a minor girl was allegedly sexually harassed by a youth when she was alone at her house in Gharidolat village under Kandhla police station limits in Shamli district. Ahead of the wedding season, illegal banquet halls and wedding farm houses in Ghaziabad have come under the scanner of the National Green Tribunal which has sought an action taken report from the authorities against them. A bench headed by acting Chairperson Justice Jawad Rahim directed the Ghaziabad Development Authority to file a detailed affidavit on the issue by July 7. The order came after the green panel was informed that there were 106 banquet halls which were operating without taking No Objection Certificate from the department concerned. "The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) is directed to file statement of the action taken against the banquet halls operating illegally in addition to the reply already filed in this case," the bench said. A man was killed allegedly by his son after an altercation in Bihar's Nawada district, the police said today. Baleshwar Manjhi (45) was beaten to death allegedly by his son Jitu Manjhi (20) after an altercation over some issue at Bajra Musahri village last night. After killing his father the son buried the body in a field of neighbouring Dhurihar village, they said. The police reached the spot and exhumed the body of the deceased from Dhurihar village and sent it to sadar hospital for post-mortem. The accused, Jitu Manjhi was absconding, they said.

The Karnataka Government on Monday filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court, claiming the latter released more water to Tamil Nadu than what was allotted to it, while settling the dispute over Cauvery river water.The matter will be heard on Tuesday (May 8).On February 16, a three-judge Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices Amitava Roy and A.M. Khanwilkar pronounced the judgement on the Cauvery Water Dispute between the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala and the UT of Puducherry.The bench directed Karnataka to release 177.25 TMC of water, instead of the 192 TMC to Tamil Nadu.
A court today posted for May 22 the hearing in the case of the juvenile accused in the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Kathua. Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) A S Langeh fixed the hearing for May 22. Earlier on April 25, the juvenile presented himself before the court amid heavy security. CJM Langeh had then asked the juvenile whether he had received copies of the charge sheet from the crime branch, to which he replied in the affirmative. The CJM court had dismissed the bail plea of the accused juvenile. The Supreme Court on Monday quashed the law passed by the Uttar Pradesh government granting permanent residential accommodation to former chief ministers of the state.The apex court, in its order, said that former chief ministers of the state were not entitled to government bungalows.While striking down the law, the Supreme Court said that Section 4(3) of Uttar Pradesh ministers (salaries, allowances and miscellaneous provisions) Act, 2016 was unconstitutional. The law was passed in August 2016, by the then Akhilesh Yadav-led state government.The law was then challenged by the NGO Lok Prahari in the top court.

Three persons were today killed after their motorcycle rammed into a stationary truck on the Etawa Khatoli state highway near Keshavpura village in Kota district, police said. The deceased were identified as Giraj Saini, Sugrave Saini and Ramhate Joshi and, all around 29 to 30 years of age, and residents of Khatoli town, Station House Office at the Etawa police station Sanjay Royal said. The bodies were handed over to the family after postmortem, he said. A 3-year-old girl was killed allegedly by her aunt in a village in Haryana's Yamunanagar district, with police suspecting it to be a case of child sacrifice. The incident took place yesterday when the accused woman, who is married and has two children, allegedly pierced a knife through the girl's throat, resulting in her death, police said. "During our investigations so far, the accused woman told us that she used to have dreams that evil spirits had gripped her. She also told us that in her dreams someone told her to make child sacrifice in order to get rid of evil spirits," they said. A 28-year-old man was stabbed to death allegedly by a disc jockey in west Delhi's Punjabi Bagh area following a quarrel over playing a song, police said. The incident took place around midnight in a restaurant at club road between a group comprising nine persons and restaurant staff over playing of a song, Vijay Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (West), said. A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped and set on fire in Kankarbona area of Pakur in Jharkhand.The victim has been admitted to West Bengal's Malda Hospital and is in a critical condition.The girl was alone at her uncle's residence when a man from the village entered her house and attacked her. As the girl resisted the rape attempt, the accused poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze. An air hostess of Air India has alleged that she was molested by the pilot of the Ahmedabad-Mumbai flight.The pilot allegedly molested the air hostess on May 4.According to the police, "A scuffle broke out between the complainant and the pilot onboard. The woman then approached the Sahar police station in Mumbai and lodged a case".Based on her complaint, the police registered a case against the pilot under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC.Further investigations are underway.
