A man allegedly shot dead his father and younger brother over inequal distribution of land in Saharsa district of Bihar today, police said. His sister-in-law and nephew were also injured in the incident. The incident occurred at Situaha Dih village under Salkhua police station when the man identified as Mantu Yadav alias Vinod Yadav shot dead his father Hardeo Yadav (80) and his younger brother Ashok Yadav (45), Salkhua police station SHO Tarun Kumar Tarunesh said. A Pakistani man has been sentenced to 18 years in jail by an anti-terrorism court for hurling shoe at a judge, the first such sentence in the country's history. The convict Ijaz Ahmed, a resident of Muzaffargarh, about 400 km from Lahore, had hurled a shoe on senior civil judge Zahid Qayyum during a hearing on March 20. Ijaz, an undertrial suspect in a robbery case, threw the shoe while complaining that he was being languished in the jail despite bail but was not being released due to absence of written release orders. After the incident, Ahmed was booked under terrorism and other sections of the Pakistan Penal Code. ATC Judge Khalid Mehmood Malik also imposed a fine of Rs 3 million on the convict. The death toll in a gas cylinder blast in the Giaspur locality here rose to 11 today, an official said. Pawan Kumar (35) succumbed to burns this morning at the CMC hospital here, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) (South) Dharm Pal said. Kumar had suffered 75 per cent burns, Pal added. The cooking gas cylinder had exploded in the residence of Ashok Kumar Yadav (58) in Samrat Colony of Giaspura last week, injuring 35 people. Yadav, his wife Sunita (40) and son Raj (13) succumbed to injuries at the CMC hospital later. Residents of houses neighbouring Yadav's are among the dead. Yadav's two daughters Kajal and Pooja are undergoing treatment at a hospital here and are in a critical condition. Twenty others are being treated at various hospitals and five of them are in a critical condition, the ACP said.
A 17-year-old was charged on Sunday over a gruesome power-drill attack in Northern Ireland that left a woman with "grave injuries", police said. The 38-year-old victim is in a critical condition, suffering from a severe head injury following the attack in Strabane, County Tyrone, at around 2.00 am (0100GMT) yesterday. "A 17-year-old male has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent, possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and theft of a drill," said the Police Service of Northern Ireland. "This was a brutal attack and the injuries sustained by the victim are extremely grave," said the PSNI's Brian Reid. The suspect is expected to appear at Omagh magistrates' court on Monday.

Former Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has been summoned to depose before the Lokayukta tomorrow in connection with the renewal of mining leases in the state. Goa Foundation, an NGO, had filed a complaint with Lokayukta, Justice (retd) P K Misra, and had alleged that the renewal of these mining leases appeared to be the result of "corrupt acts". "Parsekar has been summoned by the Lokayukta to appear before it and depose in connection with the case filed against him," a senior Lokayukta official told PTI today. The complainant urged the Lokayukta to probe the circumstances that led to the renewal of 88 mining leases in the state to various private firms, including a multinational company, between November 1, 2014 and January 12, 2015. The 88 mining leases renewed during this period had an annual production capacity of 44 million tonnes, the NGO stated in its complaint. The Bombay High Court has held that a citizen's right to seek administration of a deceased person's estate in accordance with the latter's will must be protected. No straitjacket formula can be fixed for deciding a time limit to move courts for such administration (management of estate and distribution of assets), it observed. The court passed the judgement on May 4 when a full bench comprising Justices S C Dharamadhikari, A A Sayyed, and K R Sriram was hearing a suit filed by a city resident seeking administration of the estate left behind by his mother. The petitioner had approached the court alleging that his father and other relatives hid his mother's will for five years after her death, and sought the court's help in getting what was rightfully his share. The expenditure incurred by the government in contesting cases in the Supreme Court has gone up from nearly Rs 11 crore in 2011-12 to Rs 42.40 crore in 2017-18, Law Ministry data shows. According to the data, submitted to a Parliamentary committee, in the financial year 2011-12, the ministry had paid Rs 10.99 crore as 'professional fee' to law officers and lawyers which are on its panel to represent the government in the Supreme Court. In 2012-13, the 'expended budget' on professional fee went up to Rs 11.73 crore and Rs 14.47 crore in 2013-14. In 2016-17, the figure stood at 32.06 crore, much higher than previous fiscals. In 2017-18 (upto February 22), the government had spent Rs 42.40 crore as professional fee. Officials pointed out that since there are not many law officers, sensitive cases are also being handled by senior advocates who are on the law ministry panel. The Delhi High Court has stayed the proceedings in a criminal complaint lodged against app-based taxi service provider Uber for allegedly operating taxis without licence and charging excess fare from passengers. The order by Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva came on Uber's plea seeking quashing of the complaint and the summons issued to it in the matter by a trial court. The court also issued notice to the NGO, which had lodged the complaint, and sought its response to the company's petition by August 20. NGO Nyaya Bhoomi lodged the complaint against both Uber and ANI Technologies, which provides cab services under the name of Ola. In its complaint, it sought recovery of Rs 91,000 crore from the two app-based taxi service providers for allegedly overcharging passengers. Ola has already moved the high court seeking quashing of the complaint and the summons issued to it by the trial court on July 31, last year. Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju says he was on the verge of being impeached when he was in the Allahabad High Court in 1992 after he ordered the reinstatement of a teacher whose appointment was cancelled by school authorities in Uttar Pradesh. A BSF jawan allegedly shot dead three colleagues with his service weapon before committing suicide today at a border outpost at Maguruli in Unakoti district, about 180 km from Agartala, police said. S P (Special branch), Shankar Debnath said the BSF jawan opened fire on three others including a head constable before killing himself. The incident happened at around 1 am. The head constable died on the spot. One of the injured jawans succumbed to injuries at Unakoti district hospital and another jawan, who was shifted to ILS Hospital in Agartala, also died, Debnath told PTI. He said investigation is on and a detailed report is awaited. When contacted, a highly placed BSF official confirmed the incident.
Two girls have dropped out of a government-aided school alleging sexual harassment by a youth at a village in neighbouring Shamli district, the police said today. The girls, who are sisters and students of Class 9, alleged they were harassed by the accused a number of times on their way home from the school in Simbhalka village, Circle Officer Ashok Kumar said. The parents of the girls, aged 16 and 17, in a complaint filed with the police said their daughters stopped going to school a few days ago following repeated incidents of sexual harassment, he said. The police have registered a case against the accused, Sudhir Kumar (22), and arrested him. In another incident, a juvenile allegedly tried to rape a two-year-old girl in the Jhijhana police station area, according to Station House Officer MS Gill. The incident occurred yesterday.
