Accident case: HC orders Rs 10.25 lakh compensation to retired teacher's kin

The Madras High Court has observed that the dismissal of an accident claim plea by a tribunal in Namakkal citing lack of territorial jurisdiction to award compensation, was more shocking than the mishap itself and ordered Rs 10.25 lakh be paid to the family of the victim, a retired teacher. Justice S Vimala made the observation while allowing an appeal by the family of the victim against the dismissal of the petition by the principal district judge in Namakkal. "It is clear that the claims tribunal at Namakkal ought not to have dismissed the claim petition even though a specific defence has been taken by the insurance company with regard to the lack of territorial jurisdiction," the high court judge said. In the absence of the insurance company showing any prejudice, the dismissal was unwarranted, she said. "The dismissal of the claim petition is more shocking than the accident itself," she added. Man held with 15 live bullets at Mangalore airport

A passenger was apprehended by the CISF today for allegedly carrying 15 live bullets at the Mangalore airport in poll-bound Karnataka, a senior official said. Fifteen live rounds of 0.32mm were seized from the baggage of P Ismail, a resident of Dakshina Kannada district, during the security check, the official said. Ismail was handed over to the police since he could not produce any documents for carrying the ammunition, he added. The man was supposed to take a flight to Nagpur.

CBI registers case against unidentified UPPSC officials

The CBI today registered an FIR to look into alleged irregularities in the upper subordinate examination conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission (UPPSC) in 2015, officials said today. The agency had received a recommendation from the state government to initiate a probe into the examination in which several allegations such as flouting of rules, favouritism and preferential treatment to some castes among others were levelled. The CBI had registered a preliminary enquiry to look into the alleged irregularities in the examination conducted by the Allahabad-based UPPSC between 2012 and 2017, they said. Based on the collection of prima facie material, the agency today registered an FIR against unidentified officials of the UPPSC and others in connection with the 2015 examination for upper subordinate staff in charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating and corruption. The sources said more FIRs could be registered by the agency in connection with the matter.

Man throws stone at 2-yr-old son for playing near railway crossing, dies

A two-year-old boy was killed allegedly after his father in a fit of rage threw a stone at him when he was playing with his siblings near a railway crossing in Slem Tabri locality here, police said today. Chotey Lal (42) last evening saw that his four children were playing near the railway track and in a fit of rage, he started throwing stones on them. His three daughters ran away, but a stone hit his son Moti's head and he died on the spot, police said. According to eyewitnesses, when the accused came to know that his son died he tried to commit suicide by jumping before a running train. But his neighbours caught hold of him and informed the police. He along with the members of his family are living in the nearby slums, police said. A case of murder was registered against Lal and he was arrested, the police added.

Herald case: Swamy, Rahul Gandhi accuse each other of delaying trial

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and Congress president Rahul Gandhi today accused each other in a Delhi court of wasting its time and delaying the trial in the National Herald case. Complainant Swamy and the accused, including Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi, traded charges before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal who was hearing arguments on applications moved by the BJP MP seeking certain documents from the Congress party. Three, including woman, daughter convicted for smuggling marijuana

Three persons, including a woman and her daughter, were convicted and sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment for smuggling marijuana. Additional Sessions Judge K M Sojitra yesterday sentenced Mumtaz Memon, her daughter Ruksana Pathan, and Munna Sheikh to 10 years in jail for smuggling marijuana, said additional public prosecutor H R Joshi. He said that Judge Sojitra also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each of them. If they failed to pay the fine, they would have to undergo an additional one year in prison, he added. Memon and her daughter were apprehended on February 22, 2014 from on board the Swaraj Express at Vadodara railway station with 26 kilograms of marijuana, he said. The two, at the time, were travelling from New Delhi to Bharuch in Gujarat and were supposed to deliver the consignment of contraband to Sheikh in Ankleshwar town, about 100 kilometres from here, Joshi said. SBCA to discuss KM Joseph's non- elevation on May 7

A General Body Meeting (GBM) of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) will be convened on May 7 to discuss the issue of Uttarakhand High Court Chief Justice KM Joseph's non-elevation to Supreme Court and removal of SCBA President Vikas Singh from office.This comes after the Supreme Court collegium could not reach a consensus on the elevation of KM Joseph. HC directs TN govt to appoint new members in JJBs in 32 dists

The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to proceed with the appointment of new members in Juvenile Justice Boards in all 32 districts, based on its new rules in consonance with the Model Rules of the Union government within four months. A division bench of justices Huluvadi G Ramesh and M Dhandapani gave the direction on three petitions filed by S Srinivasa Raghavan and C Anandaraj. The petitioners sought a direction to restrain the Director of Social Defence, Chennai, from appointing the members to the Boards without forming the selection committee as per the Model Rules Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015. Pvt bank employee, son killed in mishap

A private bank employee and his son were killed on the spot while his wife and daughter were seriously injured when the car in which they were travelling rammed into a roadside tree near here early today,police said.
