Five persons were arrested while they were trying to decamp with firearms from the premises of a court here, the police said today. The arrest took place late last night near the civil court premises where a patrol team of Kotwali police spotted the five men who were in possession of a gun and a rifle, Superintendent of Police Gaurav Mangala said. He said during interrogation the arrested persons, from whom a motorcycle was also seized, revealed that they had stolen the firearms from the court warehouse where they entered through its window. They were sent to judicial custody, the SP said.
Three men, who were on the run after allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl, have been arrested from Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh, police said today. The accused have been identified as Ajay, Nishu and Shashi. They were absconding since April 26 when they, along with two minors, allegedly raped the teen in a forest, near Palampur, in Himachal Pradesh. The minors were apprehended on April 28. The accused spent a night in Kapurthala district of Punjab, before fleeing to Gorakhpur, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Kangra Santosh Patial said. The three accused, in their twenties, worked as labourers and were being brought to Dharamsala, he added. With this, all the accused in the case have been nabbed, the SSP said, adding that none of the accused was known to the victim. The accused had attacked the victim and her male friend while they were returning home from the Garh Mata temple. They had allegedly beaten up the girl's friend, dragged her into the forest and raped her.
A woman allegedly abducted by a man a few days ago, was rescued and her kidnapper was arrested, police said today. Acting on a complaint filed by the family members of the woman, the police registered a case, said Abid Bhukhari, the SHO of Chanderkot police station. Various teams were formed to trace the kidnapper. The accused, identified as Jagdeep Raj, was arrested last evening from Lakhanpur belt of Kathua district, the SHO said. The police also seized the car in which Raj was travelling, he added.
A group of naxals allegedly shot dead a 45-year-old man in Horekasa village in Gadchiroli district, police said today. The incident took place late last night, they said. The victim, Pandurang Pada, a resident of Horekasa in Dhanora tehsil was asleep in his house when around nine naxals stormed in and tried to take him into the forest area forcibly, a statement issued by Gadchiroli police said. His family members raised an alarm, following which residents of the village gathered outside their house. All of them requested the rebels to leave Pandurang. However, the naxals, who were armed, forcibly took him into the forest area and shot him dead there, police said. On hearing the gunshots, some villagers went to the site, only to find Pandurang lying dead. Police said they are yet to ascertain the motive behind the murder.
A 35-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly hacked to death by an unidentified person in Uttar Pradesh's Mahoba district, police said today. The incident took place yesterday in Gyodi village which comes under the jurisdiction of Khanna police station, SP N Kolanchi said. Girija was attacked while she was working in the cattle shed at the house of a former village head, he said. The axe used in the crime was found lying near the body, the SP said, adding that a case was registered.
Fourteen persons have been arrested in connection with the alleged rape and killing of an 18-year-old woman by setting her on fire in Chatra district yesterday, a top district official said today. The victim, who suffered severe burn injuries in the incident, was declared "brought dead" by doctors when she was rushed to a nearby hospital yesterday, police said. "So far, 14 persons involved in the incident have been arrested since last night," Deputy Commissioner of Chatra Jitendra Kumar Singh told PTI. A massive hunt was on to nab six others, including the main accused, Dhanu Bhuiyan, he said, while exuding confidence that all of them would be arrested soon. The bodies of a man and a woman were found inside a car parked along the Jaipur-Delhi highway in Shahpura area today, a police officer said. The car's engine was on and the bodies were lying on the front seats of the vehicle, said Virendra Singh, the SHO of Shahpura police station. "Prima facie, the man and the woman committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance. The bodies are being shifted to a nearby hospital for postmortem," Singh said. Circle officer Bhag chand said that the man has been identified as Sunil Sharma, aged around 25 years, while efforts are on to identify the woman.

The Uttar Pradesh Police said today it has arrested a man and seized illicit liquor worth Rs seven lakh from his truck in Kairana town in Shamli district. The vehicle was intercepted at a check-post in the town last evening, Circle Officer Rajesh Tiwari said, adding that the liquor was hidden inside fruit crates. A man has been arrested in connection with the incident, he said. During interrogation, the man told the police that the liquor was smuggled from Haryana to Uttar Pradesh. The Shamli district administration has launched a drive against illicit liquor ahead of Kairana Lok Sabha bypoll on May 28.
A four-year-old girl was allegedly tortured with a hot iron rod by her parents' friend here as punishment for not eating, the police said today. The child was admitted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, they said. The incident took place two days ago, but it came to light yesterday when locals informed the police. The victim's mother said she and her husband had left their daughter at their friend's house for the summer vacation so that she could play with his baby. A three-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 20-year-old man in Bhosari in Pune earlier this week.The accused was arrested by the police on the same day (May 2) and a case has been registered by the police under the POCSO Act and Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with other relevant sections.The accused has been remanded to three days of police custody by the court.The incident happened around 3:30 pm on Wendesday, when the victim was playing outside her house. The Madras High Court has allowed the termination of pregnancy of a 14-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped five months ago by a man known to her. When a petition from the Child Welfare Committee in Chengalpet came up for hearing recently, Justice T Raja directed the dean of Chengalpet Medical College and Hospital to terminate the pregnancy of the girl and preserve the foetus. The parents of the girl had approached the Kancheepuram collector with a complaint that their daughter was raped about five months ago, following which the Child Welfare Committee had stepped in. The girl was subsequently admitted to the Christ Faith Home for Children at Manapakkam in Chennai. At that time, a doctor's report had confirmed that the girl was raped. She was then taken to the Chengalpet Medical College and Hospital and a case was registered. The railways will conduct an enquiry against three senior officials for allegedly taking bribes of up to Rs 3 lakh from the operators of Yatri Ticket Suvidha Kendra (YTSK), which were launched by the national transporter in 2014 to expand its ticketing system, sources said. The Northern Railway officers, one of whom is a senior divisional commercial manager in New Delhi, face termination if found guilty of corruption, the sources added. Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani received a complaint on Thursday, alleging that the three officers had demanded bribes for issuing licences, when all of them were posted in Delhi, for the modernisation of and running YTSKs. A US court today sentenced to life imprisonment a Navy veteran who yelled "get out of my country" before killing Indian engineer Srinivas Kuchibhotla in a racially motivated hate crime at a bar in Kansas City last year. A federal judge in Kansas sentenced Adam Purinton to nearly 78 years in prison as part of a plea agreement reached in March. Purinton would not be eligible for parole until after he turns 100, KSHB reported. In March this year, Purinton, 52, had pleaded guilty to the charges of murdering Kuchibhotla. Purinton was charged with first-degree murder of Kuchibhotla, 32, and two counts of attempted first-degree murder in the shootings of his friend, Alok Madasani, and a bystander, who chased Purinton after he fled the Austin's Bar and Grill in Olathe city on February 22 last year. The official said the truck coming from Kathua district was intercepted on a highway in Gagwal area.
