Ernst & Young partner settles complaint over sexual assault
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Ernst & Young has reached a settlement with Jessica Casucci, a partner who accused the firm of failing to act when she reported that she was sexually assaulted by another partner, the firm said Thursday.
Former Volkswagen CEO Winterkorn indicted in US over 'Dieselgate'
Former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn has been indicted in the United States over his alleged role in the German auto giant's 'dieselgate' scandal, court papers showed today. Winterkorn's indictment brings the US criminal case to the uppermost levels of Volkswagen, which pleaded guilty last year to lying to American environmental regulators about emission control systems. "The indictment unsealed today alleges that Volkswagen's scheme to cheat its legal requirements went all the way to the top of the company," US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement. Prosecutors say Winterkorn knew of the company's emissions cheating as early as May 2014 but decided to continue with the fraud, the Justice Department said in a statement. In the summer of 2015, months before the scandal broke, Winterkorn chaired a "damage table meeting" at Volkswagen's headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany where engine development staff delivered a presentation on how the company was deceiving US regulators
Police officer booked for allegedly sexually abusing minor
A police officer has been booked by the Ernakulam central police for allegedly sexually abusing a minor girl here, an official said today. The officer was charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) on the basis of a complaint by the girl's parents, the police said. The girl alleged that the officer, an assistant sub inspector from neighbouring Kottayam district, grabbed her wrist without her permission when she was in an elevator of a building here on Monday. The police said that the accused officer is a relative of the girl. A preliminary investigation is launched in the incident, they said, adding no arrest has been made so far.
Bill Cosby, Roman Polanski booted out of Academy
Director Roman Polanski and comedian Bill Cosby have been expelled from the membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Board of Governors of AMPS met on May 1 and voted to expel Cosby and Polanski in accordance with their Standards of Conduct, according to a release. "The Board continues to encourage ethical standards that require members to uphold the Academy's values of respect for human dignity," the Academy said in a statement. Both Cosby and Polanski have faced sexual harassment and rape charges for years. Cosby, 80, was recently found guilty of three charges of aggravated sexual assault in a retrial brought against him by Andrea Constand. Polanski has admitted to having sex with a 13-year-old girl after plying her with champagne and pills in 1978 at actor Jack Nicholson's house. Madras HC dispenses with personal appearance of Chidambaram's 3 family members before IT officials
The Madras High Court today ordered dispensing with the personal appearance of former Union minister P Chidambaram's wife Nalini, his son Karti and daughter-in-law Srinidhi before Income Tax authorities in connection with notices issued against them under the black money act. The interim order was passed on appeals filed by the three family members of the former finance minister challenging the April 12 order of Justice T S Sivagnanm refusing to restrain the Income Tax (IT) authorities from sanctioning any prosecution for alleged economic offences against them. The three alleged that the actions of the IT officials were politically motivated and vindictive. When the appeals came up before the summer vacation bench of Justices V Bharathidasan and N Seshasayee, it dispensed with their personal appearance before the IT authorities. ED summons: Nalini files appeal against order dismissing her petition
Former Union minister P Chidambaram's wife Nalini Chidambaram today filed an appeal in the Madras High Court challenging its order dismissing her petition against Enforcement Directorate summons asking her to appear as a witness in its money laundering probe in the Saradha chit fund scam. When the appeal by Nalini Chidambaram, a senior advocate, against the April 24 order of a single judge bench came up, vacation bench, comprising Justice V Bharathidasan and Justice N Seshasayee, said it would hear the matter tomorrow if time permits. 75 cocaine capsules found from Bolivian's abdomen
Seventy-five capsules containing cocaine were found inside the abdomen of the Bolivian national who had died here sometime after he was detained by the customs officials on suspicion of drug smuggling, police said today. The accused, identified as Salomon Edgar Vaca Arambel, 49, was intercepted by the customs officials at the Delhi International Airport after his arrival from Addis Ababa on April 27. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Airport) Sanjay Bhatia said the Bolivian national was detained after receiving information that he was allegedly carrying drugs. His body was preserved in the mortuary at Safdarjung Hospital for autopsy, Bhatia said adding 75 capsules containing cocaine weighing 519 grams were recovered by the autopsy surgeon from his abdomen. The viscera of Arambel has been preserved and an autopsy report is awaited. Earlier, the customs officials had received inputs that Arambel would be arriving in an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, .
Illegal constructions were carried out in Cong rule: Himachal CM

Kasauli killing: SP, DSP shifted out of Solan; award for victim Shail Bala
The Himachal Pradesh government today shifted two senior police officials out of the Solan district following the Kasauli shooting incident, officials said. The state government also decided to confer the 'Himachal Gaurav Puruskar' on Assitant Town Planner Shail Bala Sharma, who was allegedly shot dead by a man when she was leading a demolition drive against illegal construction in Kasauli in Solan district. The state government shifted Mohit Chawla, Superintendent of Police, Solan, and Romesh Sharma, DSP, Parwanoo, as a fall out of the shooting incident, officials said. Minor girl raped by 55-year-old man in Assam
A 55-year-old man allegedly raped a minor girl in lower Assam's Kokrajhar district, police said today. The incident, which took place yesterday, came to light after the six-year-old girl narrated her ordeal to her mother, they said. The girl's mother lodged a complaint at Kokrajhar police station, following which the accused was arrested, the police said. Meanwhile, women wings of the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) took out a protest rally today in Kokrajhar town. Along with the women wings of BPF, several other organisations have also condemned the incident and demanded stringent punishment to the accused.
Man arrested for Dwarka killings
A 24-year-old man was arrested today for his alleged involvement in the killing of a criminal and his associate in Dwarka over a property dispute, police said. The accused, Arjun Dalal alias Monu, was nabbed this afternoon from Dwarka on the basis of a tip-off, they added. Yesterday, Sandeep alias Mental (36) and his associate, Pawan Maan alias Ponny (29) were shot in Bamnoli village while on their way to the Dwarka court for a hearing in one of the cases in which Sandeep was an accused. Some of the accused had come in a car and the others on a motorcycle. The police analysed CCTV recordings and interrogated several people. Madrasa teacher held for sexually abusing six minors
Hyderabad Police on Thursday arrested a Madrasa teacher for sexually abusing six minor children.Speaking to ANI, Venkateshwarlu, Circle Inspector of Asif Nagar police station said all six children, between the age group of six to eight years, were rescued and sent for counselling."On May 1, a father approached the police station and filed a complaint stating his minor son was sexually abused by moulvi (Teacher) in Madrasa. Immediately, we registered an FIR and took up the investigation," he said.He added, "We got to know that the teacher has sexually abused six minor children in Madrasa. A Delhi court today said it has no objection to the issuance of passport to 1997 Uphaar fire tragedy convict Sushil Ansal as the matter had nothing to do with the ongoing trial against him in a case of tampering of evidence. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sherawat, while hearing an application of Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT) that Ansal's passport number quoted in his plea was different from the one he had earlier mentioned before the court in 2008, said that the objection can be taken into consideration by the passport authority. The Madras High Court today allowed the Income Tax department to proceed with its inquiry based on a show cause notice issued to former union minister P Chidambaram's son Karti and other directors of a company under the black money act. A bench of justices V Bharathidasan and N Seshasayee, however, directed the Principal Director of Income Tax (Investigation), Chennai, to grant a due and proper opportunity to Karti and other directors of the Chess Global Advisory Services Private Limited for presenting their case. Passing interim orders on a petition by the company and the directors, including Karti, seeking to quash the April 13 show cause notice issued by the department, it posted the matter to June 5 for further hearing. Maharashtra tourist dies at Gulmarg after complaining of stomach pain
A 51-year-old visitor from Maharashtra died today at the Gulmarg tourist resort of Kashmir after complaining of stomach pain, police said. Anil Pandurang Shinde, who was staying at a hotel in Gulmarg, complained about stomach pain in the early hours hours and was shifted to a local Primary Health Centre, a police spokesman said. He said Shinde was declared brought dead by the doctors at the health centre. The body of the deceased has been shifted to sub-district hospital Tangmarg for further legal formalities, the spokesman said, adding inquest proceedings have been initiated to ascertain cause of death.
Charge sheet filed in Kathua rape case had discrepancies: Citizens' group
A citizens' group which conducted an individual probe into the Kathua rape incident today claimed that the charge sheet filed by the Jammu and Kashmir Police in the case had discrepancies and the investigation was botched-up. Kasauli killing: Man who shot woman officer held in Mathura
The man accused of killing a woman officer leading a demolition drive against illegal construction was nabbed today in Mathura, police said. In a bid to change his appearance, Vijay Singh shaved his moustache and trimmed his hair but he was caught sitting near a temple, they said. Police had yesterday released Singh's photograph and offered a reward of Rs 1 lakh for clues. "The accused was arrested from Mathura in a joint operation by Himachal and Delhi Police.
