Former Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn has been indicted in the United States over his alleged role in the German auto giant's 'dieselgate' scandal, court papers showed today. Winterkorn's indictment brings the US criminal case to the uppermost levels of Volkswagen, which pleaded guilty last year to lying to American environmental regulators about emission control systems. "The indictment unsealed today alleges that Volkswagen's scheme to cheat its legal requirements went all the way to the top of the company," US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in a statement. Prosecutors say Winterkorn knew of the company's emissions cheating as early as May 2014 but decided to continue with the fraud, the Justice Department said in a statement. A police officer has been booked by the Ernakulam central police for allegedly sexually abusing a minor girl here, an official said today. The officer was charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) on the basis of a complaint by the girl's parents, the police said. The girl alleged that the officer, an assistant sub inspector from neighbouring Kottayam district, grabbed her wrist without her permission when she was in an elevator of a building here on Monday. The police said that the accused officer is a relative of the girl. A preliminary investigation is launched in the incident, they said, adding no arrest has been made so far.
Director Roman Polanski and comedian Bill Cosby have been expelled from the membership of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The Board of Governors of AMPS met on May 1 and voted to expel Cosby and Polanski in accordance with their Standards of Conduct, according to a release. "The Board continues to encourage ethical standards that require members to uphold the Academy's values of respect for human dignity," the Academy said in a statement. Both Cosby and Polanski have faced sexual harassment and rape charges for years. Cosby, 80, was recently found guilty of three charges of aggravated sexual assault in a retrial brought against him by Andrea Constand. The interim order was passed on appeals filed by the three family members of the former finance minister challenging the April 12 order of Justice T S Sivagnanm refusing to restrain the Income Tax (IT) authorities from sanctioning any prosecution for alleged economic offences against them. The three alleged that the actions of the IT officials were politically motivated and vindictive. Seventy-five capsules containing cocaine were found inside the abdomen of the Bolivian national who had died here sometime after he was detained by the customs officials on suspicion of drug smuggling, police said today. The accused, identified as Salomon Edgar Vaca Arambel, 49, was intercepted by the customs officials at the Delhi International Airport after his arrival from Addis Ababa on April 27. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Airport) Sanjay Bhatia said the Bolivian national was detained after receiving information that he was allegedly carrying drugs. His body was preserved in the mortuary at Safdarjung Hospital for autopsy, Bhatia said adding 75 capsules containing cocaine weighing 519 grams were recovered by the autopsy surgeon from his abdomen. The viscera of Arambel has been preserved and an autopsy report is awaited. The Himachal Pradesh government today shifted two senior police officials out of the Solan district following the Kasauli shooting incident, officials said. The state government also decided to confer the 'Himachal Gaurav Puruskar' on Assitant Town Planner Shail Bala Sharma, who was allegedly shot dead by a man when she was leading a demolition drive against illegal construction in Kasauli in Solan district. A 55-year-old man allegedly raped a minor girl in lower Assam's Kokrajhar district, police said today. The incident, which took place yesterday, came to light after the six-year-old girl narrated her ordeal to her mother, they said. The girl's mother lodged a complaint at Kokrajhar police station, following which the accused was arrested, the police said. Meanwhile, women wings of the Bodoland People's Front (BPF) took out a protest rally today in Kokrajhar town. A 24-year-old man was arrested today for his alleged involvement in the killing of a criminal and his associate in Dwarka over a property dispute, police said. The accused, Arjun Dalal alias Monu, was nabbed this afternoon from Dwarka on the basis of a tip-off, they added. Hyderabad Police on Thursday arrested a Madrasa teacher for sexually abusing six minor children.Speaking to ANI, Venkateshwarlu, Circle Inspector of Asif Nagar police station said all six children, between the age group of six to eight years, were rescued and sent for counselling."On May 1, a father approached the police station and filed a complaint stating his minor son was sexually abused by moulvi (Teacher) in Madrasa. A 51-year-old visitor from Maharashtra died today at the Gulmarg tourist resort of Kashmir after complaining of stomach pain, police said. Anil Pandurang Shinde, who was staying at a hotel in Gulmarg, complained about stomach pain in the early hours hours and was shifted to a local Primary Health Centre, a police spokesman said. He said Shinde was declared brought dead by the doctors at the health centre. The body of the deceased has been shifted to sub-district hospital Tangmarg for further legal formalities, the spokesman said, adding inquest proceedings have been initiated to ascertain cause of death.

The man accused of killing a woman officer leading a demolition drive against illegal construction was nabbed today in Mathura, police said. In a bid to change his appearance, Vijay Singh shaved his moustache and trimmed his hair but he was caught sitting near a temple, they said.
