2 minor girls raped in UP

Two minors girls were allegedly raped in Rampur and Amroha districts of Uttar Pradesh, police said today. In both cases, the accused are aged about 11-12 years and have been apprehended. The incidents took place yesterday. In Rampur, a seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped in a forested area about 30 km from the district headquarters. In Amroha, a five-year-old girl was allegedly raped. Police have lodged separate cases and took the girls for medical examination.

Teenage girl raped in Chhattisgarh; two held

A 17-year-old girl attending a marriage was allegedly raped by two persons, including her relative, at a secluded spot near the venue of the function in Chhattisgarh's Durg district after they lured her into taking a ride in an SUV, police said today. The incident comes three days after a minor was allegedly raped and killed in Kabirdham district of the state. Both the accused, identified as Bhuneshwar Nishad and SUV driver Trilochan Janghel, have been arrested, a senior police officer said. Durg Superintendent of Police Sanjeev Shukla said that accused Nishad is related to the victim from the side of her paternal aunt. "The girl, who hails from Chhuikhadan area in Rajnandgaon district, had arrived along with the 'barat' for marriage of her relative in Durg on Saturday," he said. Novel tool can spot potential child rapists in online chatrooms

Scientists have developed an algorithm that can help identify potential sex offenders in online chatrooms, especially the ones who are most likely to set up face-to-face meetings with children. Law enforcement officers are often inundated with cases involving the sexual solicitation of minors - some interested in sexual fantasy chats, with others intent on persuading an underage victim into a face-to-face meeting. The Chat Analysis Triage Tool (CATT), developed by researchers at Purdue Polytechnic Institute in the US, allows officers to work through the volume of solicitations and use algorithms to examine the word usage and conversation patterns by a suspect. Data was taken from online conversations provided voluntarily by law enforcement in the US. "We went through and tried to identify language-based differences and factors like self-disclosure," said Kathryn Seigfried-Spellar, assistant professor Purdue Polytechnic Institute. Asst project manager of 0disha govt undertaking arrested in DA

An assistant project manager of Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation Ltd was arrested by vigilance sleuths for allegedly possessing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income, officials said today. Bikram Keshari Malla was arrested yesterday after vigilance sleuths found that he was in possession of assets of over Rs 1.21 crore, which is 302 per cent of his total known sources of income, they said. The Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation Ltd is a state government undertaking. Malla's three storied house at Lingaraj Vihar in Bhubaneswar, a double storied building in Rayagada, house at native village Malikeswarpur in Kendrapara district, office chamber here and a rented house of a relative here were searched simultaneously on March 31, 2017, the sources said. In course of the search Malla was found in possession of disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs 1,21,54,887, which is 302 per cent more than his known sources of income. A

Merchant navy officer arrested for stalking DU student

A 25-year-old merchant navy officer was arrested for allegedly stalking and harassing a Delhi University student, the police said today. The incident was reported from southeast Delhi's Amar Colony and the man was arrested on Friday, they said. The student claimed that the man met her at a park a few months ago and had asked for her phone to make a call as his phone's battery was out of charge. He also convinced the girl to share her number and started messaging and calling her, the police said. When she ignored him, he started sending her threatening and vulgar messages, following which she approached the police.

Prez gives nod to Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance

President Ram Nath Kovind has given assent to promulgation of the Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance, 2018, giving authorities powers to attach and confiscate the proceeds of crime and properties of economic offenders like bank fraudsters or loan defaulters fleeing the country. The ?Fugitive Economic Offenders Ordinance, 2018 is aimed at deterring economic offenders from evading the process of law by remaining outside the jurisdiction of Indian courts, an official statement said. "The need for the Ordinance has arisen as there have been instances of economic offenders fleeing the jurisdiction of Indian courts, anticipating the commencement, or during the pendency, of criminal proceedings," it said without naming anyone. The law is aimed at quickly recovering losses to exchequer or public sector banks in cases of frauds like the alleged USD 2 billion fraud by fugitive jeweller Nirav Modi. Woman killed while trying to board moving train in MP's Morena

A 45-year-old woman died after she fell, and was run over, while trying to board a moving train here, railway police said. "The woman, identified as Taramati from Maharashtra's Deothan area, came under the train while she was trying to board the Sampark Kranti Express yesterday afternoon," Harcharan Lal, in charge of the railway police station here, said. He said that the train, which had just started moving when the victim attempted to board it, severed her head. "She had alighted at the station to get water and moments later the train started moving. She tried to board it but slipped and fell down and the train ran over her," the official said. He informed that the victim was part of a group of 150 pilgrims who were on their way to Haridwar. A case has been registered and further investigations were underway, Lal added.

Four arrested in Chhattisgarh for betting during IPL match

Four persons were arrested in Chhattisgarh"s Bastar district for allegedly betting during an IPL match that was held yesterday, a senior official said. "Four persons were arrested yesterday night while they were betting online on a match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab from an apartment in Jagdalpur's Housing Board Colony," Kondagaon Additional Superintendent of Police, Maheshwar Nag, told PTI. He added that police had received a tip-off about an online betting racket, involving IPL matches, in Kondagaon town. A police team had also visited Visakhapatnam in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh on April 20 to nab some of those involved, the official said. Minor girl gang-raped in UP

A minor girl was allegedly gang-raped by three men on the pretext of giving her a job in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao.The victims said that the accused were a close friend of his family and offered help in finding a job after her father jailed his mother on false charges."My father got my mother lodged in jail on false charges. I was all alone after that and was looking for a job. One of a family friend offered to help me in finding a job. 29 gold bars seized

29 gold bars weighing one kg each were recovered from a person who was arrested from Muallungthu, about 17 km from here, a Customs official said today. The gold bars seized yesterday were worth over Rs 916.80 lakh, Deputy Commissioner of Aizawl Customs Division James Guite said. One Hualzidinga (55), a resident of Mizoram-Myanmar border town of Champhai was arrested. It was suspected that gold bars were smuggled in from Myanmar.

Man booked for trying to rape minor

An FIR was today registered against an unidentified person for allegedly trying to rape a 11-year-old Dalit girl in Baniyather area, police said. The incident took place this morning when the man caught the girl when she was returning home after attending a marriage function in the village, Circle Officer Onkar Singh said. When the girl resisted, he tried to strangulate her, he said. The girl managed to flee and reached her home after which an FIR was registered against the man. The girl has been admitted to a hospital. Police is probing the matter and trying to ascertain the identity of the accused.

Man gets 10 yrs imprisonment for abducting, raping minor girl

A court in Baghpat district has sentenced the head of a local mosque to 10 years of imprisonment for abducting and raping a 15-year-old girl in 2016. Additional District and Sessions Judge Ramesh Chand yesterday also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on Rihan. He was held guilty for rape and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, according to government lawyer Surender Yadav. The girl was abducted and raped by the man in a village in Baghpat district on January 19 2016. The accused belongs to Muzaffarnagar district, he said.

President Kovind promulgates ordinance to strengthen POCSO Act

President Ramnath Kovind on Sunday promulgated the ordinance to strengthen the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.In the wake of an increase in incidents of rape of minors, the Union Cabinet on Saturday approved a number of measures to amend the POCSO Act.As per government sources, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the promulgation of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018, for effective deterrence against commission of rape, thereby instilling a sense of security among women and especially young girls in the country.The ordinance seeks death penalty for the rapists of girls below 12 years of age and stringent punishment for perpetrators of rape particularly of girls below 16 years.The minimum punishment in case of rape of women has been increased from rigorous imprisonment of 7 to 10 years, extendable to life imprisonment. In case of rape of a girl under 16 years, minimum punishment has been increased from 10 to 20 years, .

Stringent anti-rape ordinance promulgated

President Ram Nath Kovind today promulgated the criminal law amendment ordinance, paving the way for providing stringent punishment, includingdeathpenalty, for those convicted of raping girls below the age of 12 years. The President's nod to the ordinance came after theUnion Cabinet's approval yesterday for tightening the law against people involved in rape, following public outcry over cases of sexual assault and murder of minors in Kathua and Surat and the rape of a girl in Unnao. "Whereas Parliament is not in session and the President is satisfied that the circumstances exist which render it necessary for him to take immediate action. BSNL officer sexually harasses woman on bus, arrested

A woman was allegedly sexually harassed by an official of a government telecom company on a Dehradun-bound bus, following which he was arrested here, police said today. The man is a BSNL officer based in Noida and was arrested last evening. He was beaten up passengers after the woman accused him of sexually harassing her, Circle Officer (CO) Rajiv Kumar Singh said. The woman is an engineer with a private firm. The CO said the incident took place on a bus going to Dehradun from Delhi. The man was arrested after passengers handed him over to the police in an area under the Mansurpur police station, he said. The matter is being investigated, police said.

SFIO to fill 14 senior level posts

The Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) plans to hire 14 people at senior levels, including assistant directors. In a public notice, the white collar crime probe agency has sought applications for filling up seven posts of Assistant Director (Investigation), two of Assistant Director (Law) and five of Senior Prosecutor. Tentative place of posting could be Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Hyderabad, according to the notice. The SFIO, which comes under the corporate affairs ministry, has a total of 133 sanctioned positions. The probe agency is a multidisciplinary organisation having experts for prosecution of white collar crimes and frauds under the companies law.
