Customs arrests five men for smuggling gold at Delhi airport

Five men have been arrested by the customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valuing Rs 60 lakh at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here. The accused were arrested in two separate cases booked by the customs on Sunday and Monday. In first case, three persons were intercepted after their arrival from Sharjah on Sunday. In their personal and baggage search, three gold bars weighing about one kg, were recovered from them. The accused were carrying one gold bar each, a statement issued today by the customs said. The trio were arrested and the gold was seized. In another case, two passengers were held after their arrival from Dubai on Monday. They were carrying two gold plates which were pasted beneath the luggage trolley with double-side adhesive tape, the statement said In both the cases five persons were arrested and gold valued at Rs 60 lakh was seized, it added.

Sweden charges Chinese with spying on Tibetan refugees

Swedish prosecutors today charged a 49-year-old Chinese man with espionage for allegedly gathering intelligence on Tibetan refugees in Sweden and Norway for China. The man, identified in the charge sheet as Dorjee Gyantsan, is accused of infiltrating the Tibetan community to pass information on their personal and political activities to Chinese officials in exchange for money. His lawyer, Mikael Soderberg, told AFP his client -- who faces up to four years in prison -- denied all charges. Dorjee acquired resident status as a refugee in Sweden in the early 2000s, and posed as a supporter of Tibetan independence, prosecutors said. He also attended Tibetan anti-China protests in Norway, and covered a visit of the Dalai Lama to Norway as a reporter for the pro-Tibetan Voice of Tibet, in order to collect information on Tibetan refugees. Kathua chargesheet: 8-year-old raped again before being stoned to death

The eight-year-old girl allegedly raped by six men, who had held her in captivity in a small village temple in Kathua district for a week in January, was kept sedated and sexually assaulted once again before she was bludgeoned to death, reveals the chargesheet in the case. The abduction, rape and killing of the Bakherwal girl was part of a carefully planned strategy to remove the minority nomadic community from the area, reveals the 15-page chargesheet filed by the Jammu and Kashmir Police's Crime Branch in the chief judicial magistrate's court here Monday. Student kills self after caught 'copying'; principal booked

A 19-year-old student, who allegedly jumped off the fourth floor of his college here yesterday apparently after he was found copying during an examination, succumbed to his injuries today, police said. Police have booked principal of MIT Nursing College and a teacher for allegedly abetting the suicide of Sachin Wagh who was caught for alleged copying during B.SC (Nutrition Biochemistry) examination yesterday by the invigilator and the principal of the college who asked him to call his parents. A police official said Wagh allegedly jumped off the fourth floor of the college fearing that his parents might reprimand him. Indrani back to jail from hosp, fears threat to life

Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the killing of her daughter Sheena Bora, today said she feared threat to her life. Mukerjea expressed the apprehension while being taken back to the Byculla prison after her discharge from J J Hospital today. Mukerjea, who was admitted in the state-run J J Hospital for the treatment of a suspected drug overdose, was brought back to the jail, Inspector General (Prisons) Rajvardhan Sinha told PTI. Her health condition is better, the hospital's dean Dr S D Nanandkar said. While she was being taken back to the jail, a reporter asked her at the J J Hospital whether she feared a threat to her life. "Yes," she replied without saying anything else, as the police rushed her out of the hospital to take her to the prison. Kathua rape-and-murder case: NC takes out protest march demanding exemplary punishment

On a day the Jammu High Court Bar Association (JHCBA) struck work demanding a CBI probe into the Kathua rape-cum-murder case, workers of the National Conference (NC) staged a march here today, demanding exemplary punishment to those involved in the crime. Led by former MLA Bimla Luthra, a group of mostly women activists took out the march from the party headquarters towards the civil secretariat, but were stopped by police after some distance, a party spokesperson said. Marriage without consent: SC wants security for K'taka woman

Unnao rape case: MLA's wife seeks narco test, CBI probe

Two days after the father of a woman, who alleged rape by a BJP MLA, died in custody in Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh, the politician's wife today demanded a narco test on her husband and the survivor. The 18-year-old woman, who had tried to kill herself outside the Chief Minister's house here, on the other hand alleged that she had been confined to a hotel room by the district administration and her uncle was killed by the MLA's brother and henchmen, who later also killed her father. She said, "I want justice, why are they pressuring me for an apology? Do they want my (another) uncle to be killed too?" Court dismisses complaint against Smriti Irani

A Delhi court today rejected a complaint against Union Minister Smriti Irani for allegedly furnishing false declarations to the Election Commission of India (ECI) at the time of filing nominations for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal dismissed the complaint noting that complainant Renu Gambhir, vice president of Socialist Party (India) Delhi Pradesh, has not appeared before the court on several dates, due to which her testimony has remained incomplete. Sharif fears he may be jailed

Pakistan's ousted premier Nawaz Sharif today claimed that the infamous Adiala Jail was already being prepared for him and alleged that three members of the joint investigation team (JIT) formed to probe his family's business dealings abroad were his "worst political opponents". Sharif, 68, made the remarks after appearing before an accountability court in Islamabad in a corruption case concerning his family's Avenfield properties, Dawn reported. Prashant Bhushan's plea to transfer defamation case against him by Amit Sibal dismissed

A Delhi court today dismissed a plea of advocate Prashant Bhushan seeking transfer of a defamation case, filed against him by former union minister Kapil Sibal's lawyer son Amit Sibal, to a magisterial court which was hearing it earlier. The matter had later been shifted to a special designated court at the orders of the Delhi High Court. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Samar Vishal, whose court was designated exclusively to deal with criminal cases involving politicians, rejected Bhushan's application saying it did not have the jurisdiction to transfer the case. "This court does not have the jurisdiction to transfer the case to any other court. The application is dismissed," the ACMM said. A 19-year-old man, who allegedly jumped off the fourth floor of his college here yesterday apparently after he was found copying by authorities during an examination, succumbed to his injuries today, police said. Sachin Wagh was caught for alleged copying during BSC (Nutrition Biochemistry) examination yesterday by invigilator and principal of MIT College who asked him to call his parents to the college, an official said. Fearing that his parents may reprimand him, Wagh allegedly jumped off the fourth floor, he said, adding that the student was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital with multiple fractures. Meanwhile, MIT College Director Munish Sharma denied allegations that authorities were pressing Wagh to pay fees. "The student concerned had paid the entire fees months back," he said.

HC notice to police on techie's plea against death sentence

The Madras High Court today ordered issuance of notice to police on an appeal filed by a 23-year-old techie against the death sentence awarded to him by a lower court in connection with the rape and murder of a minor girl here last year. A division bench of Justices S Vimala and Ramathilagam issued notice to the inspector of Mangadu police station. A Mahila court in Chengalpattu had on February 19 convicted S Dhasvanth in the case of rape and murder of seven-year-old girl. He had lured the child, into his flat at Mugalivakkam here, using a dog and strangled her to death after raping her. The accused then dumped the body in travel bag and later burnt it on a highway. A charge sheet was filed against Dhasvanth and the lower court convicted Dhaswanth for the offence. Stating that the trial court judge grossly erred in finding the accused guilty based only on conjunctures and surmises not amounting to evidence, the 23-year-old techie filed the appeal.

Submit names of closed industries around Kaimoor Wildlife Sanctuary: NGT to UP

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has granted the "last opportunity" to the Uttar Pradesh government to file an affidavit stating the names of closed industries near Kaimoor Wildlife Sanctuary (KWLS) in Sonbhadra district. A bench headed by Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore directed the District Magistrate of Sonebhadra to be present before it on April 20, along with relevant records. 4 men decamp with valuables from NRI's locker; bank mgr held

Four men posing as 'brothers' of an NRI allegedly opened his safe vault at a nationalised bank here and decamped with valuables worth about Rs 12 lakh after producing his fake death certificate and will, the police said today. The police has arrested the bank's manager and one of the impostors in connection with the incident. The impostors allegedly opened the locker in January this year but the offence came to light in February when the NRI, settled in USA, visited the bank for opening his safe vault, Deputy Commissioner of Police Manish Singh told PTI. Two bodies found in separate incidents

In separate cases, two bodies were today recovered from different areas under Thane police commissionerate, an official said. In the first case, headless body of a man was recovered from Jawsai village, while in the second one, a 26-year-old man was allegedly found murdered in Uttar Shiv in Dahisar area, police said. "In the first incident, the Ambernath police recovered the highly decomposed torso of a man aged around 40, on the hillock in Jawsai village," Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. After a search, the police found the severed head lying at a distance. The body has been sent to a government hospital for post-mortem, she said. An offence under IPC sections 302 and 201 was registered in connection with the incident.
