A woman constable was severely injured after a police team was pelted with stones when it reached a village in the district to arrest an accused in a cow slaughtering case, police said today. The incident occurred last evening when the team had gone to arrest accused Dilshad in Tawli village here, SHO Kushalpal Singh said. Villagers began pelting stones at the police personnel to free Dilshad, Singh said, adding that Constable Suvati sustained severe injuries in the incident. A case was registered under sections 147, 148, 149, 336, 332, 353 and 333 of the IPC against 37 people, of whom 17 were named, in connection with the attack, the SHO said. Accused Dilshad was arrested and sent to jail, he added.
A man and a woman who were allegedly in a relationship committed suicide by jumping before a running train in Karauli district of Rajasthan today, police said. Kallu Meena (25) and Rekha (20), both residents of different villages in the district, jumped before Janshatabdi Express near Sikroda railway station. The bodies were shifted to a local hospital's mortuary for postmortem, SHO of Hindaun Sadar Police Station Ramveer Singh said. He said that primary investigations reveal that they were in a relationship for some time. The matter is under investigation.
Two African nationals, allegedly involved in an online fraud were arrested here today, police said. A press release from the cyber crime wing of police said the accused Prince Kanyinda from Congo and Marwan Abdul Kareem from Sudan had allegedly hacked e-mails and sent phishing mails seeking money. Based on a complaint from one Chandra Sekhar, the duo was held. The complainant said his e-mail ID was hacked and mails were sent to his clients asking them to deposit money in banks. The victim said one of his clients had deposited Rs 50,000 in the hackers' bank account through a nationalised bank. Further, the hackers had created a dummy e-mail, he added. During investigation, the police seized many bank passbooks, ATM cards and mobilephones, among others, from the two Africans.
A local court here held two accused guilty in the killing of former MP Liyakat Ali Khan's nephew and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Additional District Sessions Judge Arvind Kumar Ray also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on accused Ramesh and Inderpal after holding them guilty under section 302 of the IPC last evening. According to government lawyer Mohd Anjum Khan, Haroon, nephew of former Member of Parliament Liyakat Ali Khan, was stabbed to death over a land dispute on November 27, 2002. Police had registered a case of murder against four accused -- Ramesh, Inderpal, Shafat and Suresh -- in this connection. Suresh and Shafat died during the pendency of the case.
The police today arrested Atul Singh, brother of a BJP MLA, in connection with the gangrape of an 18-year-old woman and the custodial death of her father in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao district, as an SIT was formed to probe the incident. A plea was also moved in the Supreme Court for a CBI probe in the matter. "The Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Additional Director General (ADG) of Police (Lucknow zone) will go into the entire gamut of issues involved in the incident," ADG (Law and Order) Anand Kumar told a press conference here. A plea was moved in the Supreme Court today seeking a CBI probe into the gangrape of a minor girl in Uttar Pradesh allegedly by a BJP MLA and his associates and the death of her father in police custody yesterday. The petition filed by advocate Manohar Lal Sharma alleged that the rape victim's father was tortured and killed in police custody at the behest of the "ruling party". Sharma, in his PIL, has sought a direction to the CBI for probe and prosecution under various provisions of IPC against the alleged kidnapping and rape of a minor girl in July last year "by the BJP MLA and his companion and custodial death of her father via torture" on April 9. A livestock development officer was arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 150, which he demanded for treating a farmer's injured bull in Buldhana district, around 500 kilometres from here, police said today. Dr Ramesh Bajirao Pacharane, a class-I officer had demanded the bribe from a 31-year-old farmer, an official said. The complainant, who hails from Dhad village in Buldhana, had gone to the livestock development office at Jambhrun Road in Buldhana to treat his bull, he said. Pacharane demanded Rs 150 bribe from him to treat the animal, an official said. Thereafter, the farmer approached the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) unit in Buldhana to complain against the officer. A trap was laid and the doctor was arrested red-handed while accepting the bribe. An investigation into the case is on.
A journalist with an English daily was allegedly assaulted by two persons in a case of road rage in the early hours here, police said today. Bramhashankar Tripathi, a journalist with Lokmat Times and secretary of the Press Club Of Nagpur, told police that a car coming from the wrong side dashed his two-wheeler on Katol Road when he was returning home around 1 am. As he fell, Saurabh Thakur (27) and Sanket Kuhite (26) got out of the car and allegedly roughed him up. After Tripathi lodged a complaint, a case was registered under sections 279 (rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of IPC, said an officer of the Sadar police station here. The half-naked body of an unidentified woman, aged around 25 years, was found in a farm in Amer area in the city, police said today. According to the preliminary investigations, the woman was strangulated to death last night. A bag containing a saree and other clothes was also found near the body, police said, adding that efforts were on to identify the woman. The body was spotted by locals who informed the police following which it was shifted to SMS hospital's mortuary, they said.
The district authorities has today cancelled the licence of fair price shop in a village here after a 75-year-old woman was allegedly beaten to death over her objection at being given less ration, police said today. The victim, Ashia, had gone to get ration from the fair price shop in Firozabad village on April 6. She had objected to being given less ration, following which, the accused owner and his relatives allegedly confronted her and beat her to death, Circle Officer Mohd Rizwan said. A postmortem report pointed to head injuries as the primary cause of death, he said. The accused were still at large and a search was underway to nab them, Rizwan added.
The Kerala Government today informed the Supreme Court that there were around 1,165 child care institutions in the state, out of which 790 were registered and 165 had closed down. The state told a bench comprising justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta that 42 such institutions do not wish to continue, while 89 are unregistered. The court was hearing a PIL filed on the basis of a 2007 newspaper report which had alleged that orphanages in Tamil Nadu's Mahabalipuram, which were run by the NGOs as well as government institutions, were reportedly involved in systematic sexual abuse of children. The Supreme Court today rebutted the Centre's defence that collection of biometric details has not infringed the right to privacy of the citizens even if these were collected before the enactment of a law on Aadhaar in 2016. While the government referred to verdicts in two earlier cases relating to privacy and said the top court had then held that privacy was not a fundamental right, the apex court bench said the question of privacy was "irrelevant" in these cases. A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra has been persistently asking the Centre what would be the status of the biometric details collected between 2010 and 2016 as there was no enabling law empowering the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to collect personal details for Aadhaar registrations. The Delhi Police has recovered a huge haul of heroin worth Rs 125 crore and arrested four members of a gang that operated internationally, an official said today. The four arrested accused include a national of Nigeria and two of Afghanistan, DCP (Special Cell) PS Kushwah said. "A total of 29 Kg of fine quality heroin valued at around Rs 125 crore has been recovered from the arrested accused. "The entire network of international narco-syndicate originated from Afghanistan and terminated in Europe through Nigerian traffickers with its trail through Pakistan, J&K and Delhi as a transit point," he said. Special Cell was working on information that some persons from Kashmir have been visiting Delhi and supplying consignments of heroin to people of Afghan origin who had migrated to India. Police has detained a hardcore criminal after authorities slapped the Public Safety Act (PSA) against him and sent him to jail in the city. The district magistrate has slapped the PSA against criminal Paramjit Kumar alias Jangi of R S Pura and was detained by the police and later sent to the Kot Bhalwal jail, a police official said. The accused was involved in six different cases, including attempt to murder and illegal possession of weapons in various police stations in the R S Pura belt since 2011, he said. A dossier was prepared by the police and submitted to the district magistrate, the official said.
The Delhi High Court today directed national carrier Air India to release the salary of a pilot, who was grounded in 2016 after being allegedly tested positive for alcohol consumption before and after flights on two occasions. Justice Rajiv Shakdher asked the airline why it had withdrawn the full salary of the pilot and how could he sustain in such circumstances. "Why no part of his salary has been paid since January 2017. You cannot withdraw the full salary. He has to have something to sustain. Release it," the judge told Air India. The pilot's flying licence was taken away but he has not been terminated from services yet and was still an employee of the airline, his counsel said. The court issued notice to the airline and the Director General Civil Aviation (DGCA), seeking their responses by May 15, the next date of hearing. Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram's son Karti was today questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Aircel Maxis alleged money laundering case, officials said here. Karti was questioned for the first time by the ED in connection with the case which is related to the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval granted in 2006 by his father. It is suspected by the ED that an alleged payment of Rs 26 lakh was made by Aircel Televentures Limited to ASCPL, the firm allegedly linked to Karti, within a few days of the FIPB approval, they claimed. The agency said it is investigating "the circumstances of said FIPB approval granted by the then finance minister (Chidambaram)". A sessions court today directed the CBI to file its second charge sheet in the murder case of a seven-year-old boy at a private school in Haryana by May 14, after the probe agency sought more time. Additional Sessions Judge Jasbir Singh Kundu granted time to the CBI after taking note of a fresh plea of the agency stating that the investigation was underway and it needed two more months to complete the probe. The CBI also told the court that it was currently investigating the role of the management of the private school and would submit the report, once the exercise is completed. The court, however, refused to grant two months time and directed the CBI to file the report by May 14. Judges of the Supreme Court and the 24 high courts are set to get enhanced dearness allowance, months after they received a nearly two-fold salary hike. According to a Law Ministry order issued on April 5, Supreme Court and high court judges will get 7 per cent DA with effect from January 1. So far, they were getting 5 per cent DA. The hike in their allowance is in line with the DA, members of all-India services get, from time to time. The judges will also get an enhanced furnishing allowance as the government has decided to amend the rules in this regard. The furnishing allowance of Supreme Court judges will be doubled from the existing Rs 5 lakh. The furnishing allowance was last revised in 2009. Till now, Supreme Court judges and chief justices of high courts were paid Rs 4 lakh for furnishing of their homes and offices. In January, the salary of Supreme Court and high court judges was hiked nearly two-folds. The Chief Justice of India will now get a monthly salary of Rs 2.80 lakh,
Excise officials have recovered gold bars weighing around 9.5 kg from three persons during a raid at a hotel in the city, a senior official said. The three persons, members of an Uttar Pradesh-based gang involved in gold smuggling, have been arrested, he said. Acting on a tip-off about the gang members, Central Excise, Kolkata, officers conducted a raid at the hotel on Zakaria Street yesterday night, and recovered the gold bars with a market value of about Rs 3.15 crore, he said. "As per our initial investigation, the trio were here to supply this consignment to someone in the city or an outsider visiting this region. We are still probing into the matter," the official added.
