Court dismisses plea against 7-day jail term for cutting trees

The Mumbai Sessions Court has upheld the order of a magistrate's court, sentencing a city resident to a week in prison for cutting four trees in his residential society in 2014. The magistrate's court in suburban Dadar had convicted Sadashiv Kamble, a former secretary of the residential society, under the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act for completely chopping a jamun, a coconut, a guava and a gulmohar tree in 2014, whereas he only had the permission to trim the trees. "The appeal is dismissed. Judgment and order by Metropolitan Magistrate, 41st Court, Dadar, is confirmed," Additional Sessions Judge M B Datye said recently, while dismissing Kamble's appeal against the conviction. The magistrate's order that had also slapped a fine of Rs 2,000 on Kamble did not require any interference, the judge noted. Two dead as dumper truck hits motorcycle

Two persons riding a motorcycle died after they were ran over by a dumper truck last night at suburban Malad, police said today. The incident around 11.30 PM at Madh-Marve Road, when a speeding truck hit their motorcycle from behind near INS Hamla, an official said. The duo, identified as Roshan Singh (23) and his friend Kiran Kharat (23), were rushed to a hospital by locals, where they were declared dead before admission. Police have arrested the dumper driver for rash and negligent driving under various sections of the IPC, the official said.

Woman held with 15 kg cannabis in Wadala

A 27-year-old woman was arrested by Anti-Narcotics Cell of crime branch for allegedly carrying 15.4 kg cannabis worth Rs 3.07 lakh in suburban Wadala, police said today. Zeenat Shaikh, a resident of suburban Andheri, was nabbed by Worli unit of ANC in front of SIWS College on Sewri-Wadala road yesterday, an official said. Shaikh allegedly came to supply the ganja to another person, but he didn't show up, he said. A case was registered under the Narcotic Drug and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said, adding that Shaikh was arrested after questionning.

Video of 'tipsy' woman arguing with cops goes viral

A woman was today booked for alleged drunken driving with a video of her friend picking up a quarrel with police over their action going viral. Both women were allegedly found in an inebirated state. Police said the woman, travelling in the rear seat of a car driven by her friend, stepped out when the vehicle was stopped at around 1 AM during a special drive against drunken driving. She started arguing with them over a breathalyser test being conducted on her friend and also chased away a camera man of a local TV channel. Police said media are usually informed of their drives against drunken driving They said the woman driver was found to have consumed alcohol above the permissible limits while her friend too was in an inebriated state. A case was registered against the driver, but not against the woman, police said.

3 persons arrested for raping and uploading video clip

Three persons were arrested today in connection with raping a teenage girl in Kalahandi district and uploading the video clip on social media, a senior police officer said. The arrests were made on the basis of an FIR lodged by the girl with the police at Junagarh regarding the incident that had taken place on March 17, said Superintendent of Police, Madkar Sandeep Sampat. As per the FIR, the 17-year-old girl was returning home from a temple on March 17 evening when the accused Chitaranjan Guru (24) along with Makund Guru (20) and Susanta Pradhani (19) gagged her and took her in a bike to a secluded place near Junagarh. While Chitaranjan Guru raped her, the other two accused persons had shot the video, the FIR said. Woman alleges rape by BJP MLA, tries self-immolation near UP CM's house

An 18-year-old woman today tried to immolate herself near Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's residence, after alleging that she was raped by a BJP legislator. The woman alleged that she was raped in June last year by Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the MLA of Unnao district's Bangermau constituency, around 90 km from Lucknow. She also accused the Unnao police of not taking any action and registering a case on her complaint, Vijay Sen Singh, in-charge of the Gautampalli police station, said. 9 Crime branch cops booked for kidnapping, extortion in Guj

Nine police officials, including an inspector of the Amreli unit of the Crime Branch, were booked by CID (Crime) today for allegedly kidnapping a builder and extorting cryptocurrency and cash from him. "The CID has registered an offence against nine police officials of Amreli Crime Branch, including its inspector Anant Patel, and have formed an SIT. JJ Hospital doctors confirm medicine overdose in Indrani's case

State-run JJ Hospital authorities today confirmed that Indrani Mukerjea, arrested in August, 2015 for allegedly killing daughter Sheena Bora, had received an overdose of medicines. They added that she was stable now and put the onus of finding out how she might have been administered an overdose of medicines on the police. Mukerjea was brought to the JJ Hospital at around 11:15 pm on Friday from the Byculla Jail in south Mumbai in a "semi-conscious" state and was admitted to the Critical Care Unit, doctors said. "It is a case of drug overdose. She was on anti-depressants. I asked her which tablets she had taken, but she did not reply. I will be asking her again. BGSBU dismisses sexual harassment complaint against prof after inquiry

The Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) in Rajauri district of Jammu and Kashmir today quashed the allegations of sexual harassment against a professor after an inquiry, saying the charge was apparently an attempt to dent the image of the varsity. An inquiry was conducted over accusations of associate professor Asgher Ali Shah sexually harassing a girl student even as the complainant was anonymous and there was no evidence in support of the allegations, the university said in a statement. On March 16, a typed letter was sent by post to several faculty members of the university and a copy of it was also received in the office of the vice-chancellor. The letter was anonymous, simply mentioning students of BGSBU with no name, no address and no contact numbers and containing allegations of sexual misconduct against Shah, the university said in the statement. Bike-lifter killed in accident: Police

A 24-year-old alleged bike-lifter was killed and his accomplice injured after their "stolen" motorcycle rammed into a flyover divider in north west Delhi's Adarsh Nagar area, police today said. A call about two injured youth lying on the flyover was received by police around 2.40 AM. They were admitted to a nearby hospital where one of them identified as Bharat was declared dead. The other, Bindu (22) was under treatment, said a police officer. It is suspected that another accomplice of the duo ran away after the accident. The motorcycle involved in accident was stolen from Ranibagh area. The duo were riding it at a high speed for the fear of being caught, said the officer. As they reached the flyover, the bike hit the divider. Bharat lost consciousness while Bindu's arm was broken and he was stuck in the gap in the divider. A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 20-year-old man at her home in Bairagarh township of the city last night, police said today. The accused, identified as Nattu aka Monu Jatav, was arrested today, said Bairagarh Police Station in-charge Sudhir Arjaria. He said the alleged incident occurred when the girl was alone at her home. Upper caste man killed for marrying Dalit girl

In a suspected case of honour killing, a 19-year-old man, who had recently married a Dalit woman, was shot dead barely 500 yards from a police station here in the early hours today. The incident took place in the posh Birhana road area, just 500 yards from the Pheel-khana police station. Police identified the deceased as Sonu Singh alias Naru, a resident of Sirki Mohal. Five Maoist supporters arrested in Jharkhand

Five CPI (Maoist) supporters have been arrested and a pistol seized from their possession in Jharkhand's Seraikela-Kharswan district, police said today. Acting on a tip-off, police teams led by Additional Superintendent of Police, Priya Ranjan and Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Seraikela), Avinash Kumar arrested two Maoist supporters Tarak Nath Kowait and Dawood Topno travelling in a car on Aruwon-Champad Road yesterday, the police said. The team also arrested three others who were escorting Kowait and Topno on a motorcycle, they said. The three motorcycle-borne persons were identified as Hikim Munda, Ghanshyam Munda and Ram Munda. 30-yr old woman shot dead by her brother in Punjab

A 30-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead by her brother over property dispute in Aliwala village here, the police said today. Paramjit Kaur had some dispute over the maternal property with her brother Gursaheb Singh, a resident of Bandala village in Tarn Taran district, they said. Though she had transferred the share of the land to her brother's name, Gursaheb still hold a grudge against the younger sister, police said. Gurusaheb, along with five-six people, today came to Paramjit's residence and allegedly started indiscriminate firing at her, following which she died on the spot. Man sets woman on fire after she resists attempt to rape her

An auto-rickshaw driver allegedly set a 43-year-old woman on fire after she resisted his attempt to rape her on the outskirts of the steel city, police said today. The woman who had received over 90 per cent burn injuries during the incident on Friday succumbed to her injuries at the Tata Main Hospital here today, the police said. The accused identified as Vinod Jaiswal has been arrested, the police said. Jaiswal had allegedly attempted to rape the woman when she was alone at her home in Govindpur area, the police said. When she resisted the attempt, the infuriated man poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze, the police said. The locals gathered on the spot and caught him.
