Man trying to smuggle cannabis to Doha held in Bengaluru

A 31-year-old passenger was today arrested at Kempegowda International Airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle 4.7 kg of cannabis from Bengaluru to Doha via Mumbai, the Narcotics Control Bureau said. The NCB said the consignment was packed in plastic packets and concealed between "chow chow" mixture food packets. The passenger had kept it in the trolley bag, the NCB said in a release. On detection, the Central Industrial Security Force personnel alerted NCB's Bengaluru zone and customs officials at the airport who seized the consignment. The release said the man, who hailed from Kochi, was later remanded to judicial custody. He has been lodged in the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, it added.

Delhi BJP leader claims Twitter account hacked, files complaint

A Delhi BJP leader has filed a complaint with the police, claiming his Twitter account has been hacked and was being misused to send out anti-party tweets. Ravinder Gupta, general secretary of the Delhi unit of the BJP, said in the complaint that his Twitter account was hacked last night. He said the account was being misused to send out anti-party tweets. Gupta, a former mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation, filed the complaint at Desh Bandhu Gupta Road police station. "We have received the complaint and looking into it," a senior police officer said.

Six Vietnam activists jailed for attempt 'to overthrow state'

Six activists were jailed for between seven and 15 years today for "attempting to overthrow the state", the harshest sentences in years as the communist country tightens its grip on critics. The one-party state routinely locks up lawyers, bloggers and dissidents, but critics say a conservative leadership in charge since 2016 is a waging a crackdown that has sent a chill throughout the dissident community. The six defendants convicted today, including prominent lawyer Nguyen Van Dai who got 15 years in jail, were sentenced after a one-day trial held under heavy security in the Vietnamese capital, lawyers told AFP. While sentencing Salman Khan to five years in jail, the Judge pointed out the fan following of the superstar, saying he is a "popular actor whose deeds are followed by people". Chief Judicial Magistrate Dev Kumar Khatri sentenced the Bollywood superstar to five years in prison for killing two blackbucks, capping a 20-year case that began with a late night safari outside this tourist city on the sidelines of a film shoot in 1998. DDA official, 3 others remanded to CBI custody in bribery case

Principal Commissioner of Delhi Development Authority (DDA) J P Aggarwal and three others, allegedly involved in a bribery case, were remanded to four days of CBI custody today. A special judge of CBI cases today remanded the Principal Commissioner of DDA and three private persons to four days of CBI custody in the bribery case, a CBI spokesman said here. Besides Aggarwal, the others arrested in the case are -- Sunil Gupta, Anil Gupta and J P Sharma. The CBI had yesterday arrested Aggarwal, Sunil Gupta and Anil Gupta for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs four lakh. The money was handed over inside a file. The file related to the allotment of a flat to Sharma, who too was subsequently arrested by the police. A case under various sections of Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Corruption Act was registered against all four persons and searches conducted at their official and residential premises, the CBI had said.

J-K revenue official among 2 arrested for accepting bribe in Udhampur

A revenue official was among two persons arrested by sleuths of the state vigilance organisation (SVO) for accepting bribe for issuance of land documents to a person in Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district. 7-year-old boy killed for resisting sexual assault, accused held

A 21-year-old man was arrested for allegedly abducting and killing a seven-year-old boy who had resisted the accused's attempt to sexually assault him in south east Delhi's Harkesh Nagar area, the police said today. A senior police officer said a complaint that the boy had gone missing was received at Okhla Phase III police outpost on April 2, following which a case was registered. During investigation, it was revealed that the missing child was last seen with Sandeep Singh, a local of Harkesh Nagar, on the day he was reported missing, the police officer said. Sandip was absconding and later traced at his brother in law's house in Noida. "During interrogation, Sandip confessed to kidnapping and murdering the boy when he resisted his attempt to sexually assault him," the officer said. Police tend to 'over charge' in sexual offence cases: panel to HC

The police tend to "over charge" by adding extra penal provisions, when registering an FIR, especially in relation to sexual offences, and this often gets carried over into the charge sheet and is relied upon by magistrates to deny bail during trial, a two-member panel told the Delhi High Court today. The panel said that the police while registering FIRs in sexual offence cases often also adds charges relating to trafficking and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Set up by the high court in November last year to examine the issue of undertrials languishing in prisons here for several years without bail, the panel gave its report after examining the records of several women lodged in the Tihar jail during their trial in connection with rape and other cases. How police officers can act as executive magistrates, asks SC

The Supreme Court today expressed surprise and asked as to how police officers can be allowed to perform the job of executive magistrates under the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to deal with bail bonds from persons for ensuring law and order. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra considered the submission of Delhi Police that Section 21 of CrPC expresses intention of the legislature that the police may be bestowed with the magisterial power. "How can police officers act like executive magistrates," the bench, which also comprised justices A M Khanwilar and D Y Chandrachud, asked. The bench then asked the counsel for the Delhi government to take instructions and file its response to the PIL filed by lawyer Aldanish Rein. 8 held in BJD youth leader's killing case

Eight persons were arrested today in connection with the killing of a youth leader of the ruling BJD in Odisha's Dhenkanal district 11 days ago, police today said. While two of the accused were picked up from West Bengal, the rest were nabbed from Talcher and Begunia areas of Odisha, Dhenkanal Superintendent of Police Santosh Nayak said. Efforts are on to nab four others in connection with the gunning down of Jasobanta Parida, who was Biju Yuva Janata Dals Dhenkanal district unit president, on March 26, he said. Disproportionate assets case against former corporator

Thane city police today registered a case for allegedly possessing disproportionate assets against former MNS corporator Sudhakar Chavan. Police registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act against Chavan and others while probing the builder Suraj Parmar suicide case in which he is an accused. Assistant Commissioner of Police Avinash Mohite, who is investigating the Parmar suicide case, said that it was found that Sudhakar Chavan and his wife had amassed property worth Rs 10.96 crore when he was a corporator between April 1992 to October 2015. The value of his assets was 40 per cent more than his known sources of income, the ACP said. The case was registered at the Vartak Nagar police station against 33 persons including Sudhakar Chavan, his associates, some family members and some officials of the Thane Municipal Corporation, a police release added. Time ripe to introduce videography in investigations: SC

Investigating agencies in India are not fully equipped and prepared for the use of videography but time was "ripe" that steps are taken to introduce videography in probe, particularly for crime scene, to strengthen the rule of law, the Supreme Court has said. The apex court said this while approving the 'centrally driven plan of action' prepared by a committee, constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on use of videography in police investigation, and the timeline given by the panel. Man repeatedly rapes minor step daughter in Ambala

A middle-aged man allegedly raped his 12-year-old step daughter repeatedly for the past one year in the Ambala cantonment area, police said today. The accused had threatened his wife and step daughter not to disclose the matter to anyone, they said. The girl and her mother escaped from the house today when the accused had gone somewhere, police said. "The mother and the daughter reached the Maheshnagar Police station and narrated the entire episode," a police official said. Sub-Inspector Satwinder Kaur took the girl to a civil hospital for medical examination. Police said the accused absconded as soon as he got the information that the matter was reported to the police. PNB scam: CBI questions four RBI officials

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday questioned four Reserve Bank of India (RBI) officials in connection with the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, wherein noted diamantaire Nirav Modi and his maternal uncle and partner Mehul Choksi are prime accused.Three chief general managers and one general manager of the central bank have been questioned regarding the case, according to sources.PNB in February detected the scam, wherein Modi and Choksi had acquired letters of undertaking (LoUs) separately to avail credit from various sources and did not repay the loan.The scam, which reportedly began in 2011, was detected in the third week of January this year, after which the PNB officials reported it to the concerned agencies.The CBI received the complaint from the PNB on January 28 and a case was registered in the case on January 31.

ASI arrested for accepting bribe in Punjab

An assistant sub inspector, posted at police station Mamdot in this border district, was today arrested by sleuths of the Punjab Vigilance Bureau for allegedly accepting bribe of Rs 10,000. Complainant Kirpal Singh of Village Lakha Singh Wala alleged that ASI Balwinder Singh was allegedly demanding money to favour his family members in some police case, officials said.
