Nawaz Sharif exempted from appearing before court

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam on Tuesday were granted an exemption from appearing before the court in the corruption hearing against them, as their flight could not take off from Lahore due to harsh weather.Nawaz's counsel Khawaja Haris intimated Judge that Nawaz's flight could not take off due to complicated weather conditions. Cop shot dead while on way to court to produce undertrial

A police havildar was shot dead in the vicinity of a court premises here today where he was escorting an undertrial who fled with the motorcycle-borne assailant, police said. Ram Iqbal Ravidas (40), a havildar, was fired upon in front of the gate of the juvenile court where he was to produce the undertrial for the determination of his age, Vaishali Superintendent of Police, Vivek Kumar said. The SP said Ravidas received three bullet injuries and died on his way to a hospital even as the undertrial escaped in the motorcycle which was being driven by the unidentified attacker. The assailant also fired a few gunshots in the air to scare the onlookers, the SP said. Hurriyat leader held for making provocative speeches

A Hurriyat leader, held last year for his alleged role in the Hawala transaction case involving the Hurriyat Conference but released later on bail, has been detained under Public Safety Act (PSA) for making provocative speeches, the police said today. An advocate by profession, Devinder Singh Behl had been arrested last year too by anti-terror NIA sleuths, was detained for making provocative speeches in public meeting at Nowshera area of Rajouri district on Sunday. "We have detained Behl under Public Safety Act (PSA) for his attempts to instigate people in Nowshera by making provocative statements aimed at challenging the territorial integrity of the country and deteriorating the public order," said Rajouri SSP Yougal Manhas. The order to detain Behl was issued today by Rajouri district magistrate on the basis of a dossier submitted to him by the police, the SSP said.

NCLAT allows parties to settle dispute over Binani Cement sale

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) today allowed the parties in dispute over selling of debt-ridden Binani Cement to amicably settle the dispute. A two-member bench of the appellate tribunal headed by Justice S J Mukhopadhaya gave liberty to the parties entangled in vexatious litigations, to settle the case amicably. "We give liberty to parties to reach settlement and approach appropriate forum for approval of the settlement," the NCLAT said. The appellate tribunal was hearing a petition filed by Binani Industries, which holds over 90 per cent share in Binani Cement. "Learned counsel for the appellant submit that appellant has offered a better amount that is 100 per cent approximately of the dues to the committee of creditors (CoC)," the court said. As per the IBC code, after a resolution plan is approved by the the CoC, it is forwarded to NCLT for approval. One gets bail, two sent to custody for assaulting BJP MLA in Delhi

A person was granted bail and two others were on Tuesday sent to judicial custody in connection with an assault on Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Vishwas Nagar Om Prakash Sharma.Three persons were arrested when Sharma and his family were on Sunday night assaulted as they got into a fight with a family returning from a birthday party over the issue of parking of a car in front of the MLA's home in Preet Vihar.According to police, the people, including women, began assaulting Sharma and his family when they parked their car in front of the MLA's house to eat ice-cream and the guard requested them to take away the VEHICLE.The people, who were allegedly drunk, started attacking Sharma, with a woman slapping him, as soon as the MLA arrived there with police.The police had registered an FIR into the matter and initiated an investigation.

HC closes defamation suit filed by Jaitley against Kejriwal

The Delhi High Court today closed the Rs 10 crore defamation suit filed by Union minister Arun Jaitley after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal apologised to him. Jaitley had filed this second defamation suit after Kejriwal's former lawyer Ram Jethmalani allegedly "abused" him in open court during the proceedings of the original defamation suit against the Aam Aadmi Party chief and five other party functionaries. Justice Manmohan allowed the settlement application jointly filed by Jaitley and Kejriwal and disposed of the suit following the AAP chief's apology, which was accepted by the BJP leader. The court accepted the written undertaking and statement of both the leaders and decreed the suit in accordance with the settlement application. Cauvery dispute: SC agrees to hear Centre's plea on Apr 9

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear the Centre's plea seeking clarification on the February 16 verdict regarding setting up of a Cauvery management scheme in the decades-old river water sharing dispute. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud kept for hearing on April 9 the Central government's plea after its counsel referred to divergent views of the concerned states on the issue of setting up of the scheme. "We will take this matter on April 9 along with the plea of Tamil Nadu," the bench said, when the Centre's counsel Wasim Qadri sought urgent hearing of the plea. The apex court, in its verdict, had asked the Centre to formulate a scheme to ensure compliance of its 465-page judgement on the decades-old Cauvery dispute. It modified the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) award of 2007 and made it clear that it will not be extending time for this on any ground. 8-yr-old girl dies of electrocution on metal staircase

An eight-year-old girl died of electrocution at a staircase in a residential society here, the police said today. The personnel of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company yesterday did some repair work in the building, located in the Lokmanya Nagar area. However, after the work, a live wire was left unattended on a metal staircase. As the girl, Siddhi Gupta, stepped on to the staircase last evening to go to her home, she got an electric shock and died on the spot, the police spokesperson said. The body was sent to the civil hospital for postmortem. The Vartak Nagar police registered an offence under Indian Penal Code section 304-A (causing death by negligence) against the MSEDCL wireman, the official said, adding that no arrest was so far in this connection.

SC to hear Centre's plea on SC/ST amendment Act

The Supreme Court of India will on Tuesday hear the central government's review petition on the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.The apex court agreed for an open court hearing at 2 p.m. on the Centre's review petition on its March 20 amendment that protects public servants and private individuals from arbitrary and immediate arrest under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.The court in a slew of guidelines also said there was no complete bar on granting of anticipatory bail, if there was no prima facie case.Attorney General K.K. Singaporean Airbnb hosts fined over unauthorised rentals

Two Singaporean Airbnb hosts were today fined 60,000 Singapore dollar (USD 45,800) each for letting out apartments without official permission, the first such case in the city-state under new rules against short-term rentals. Housing agents Terence Tan En Wei and Yao Songliang had previously pleaded guilty to illegally renting out four apartments in a luxury private condominium in central Singapore. Prosecutors said the pair had listed the apartments on Airbnb, which allows homeowners to share their homes for a fee by marketing them online, and other vacation rental sites. The duo made 19,000 Singapore dollar (USD 14,500) from renting the apartments between May 15 and June 21 last year, according to court documents. They were charged under regulations introduced last May banning homeowners from leasing property for less than three months without approval from authorities. Pak's NAB files case against ex-army officers

Indian yoga instructor convicted for molesting woman in S'pore

An Indian yoga instructor has been convicted by a court in Singapore for molesting a woman during class, according to a media report today. Rakesh Kumar Prasad was sentenced to a nine-month jail term along with a fine of 1,000 Singapore dollar by the court yesterday but granted a bail of 16,000 Singapore dollar pending appeal. Prasad's lawyer said that he would be apealing against the court decision, the Straight Times reported. According to the report, Prasad committed the offences against the woman in April 2015 at a yoga studio in Tampines housing estate. The woman was then aged 25. Following a 12-day trial, which began in 2016, District Judge Luke Tan found Prasad guilty earlier this year on one count each of outraging the woman's modesty and using criminal force on her. Constable from Assam held in Thane CDR case

A police constable from Assam has been arrested in connection with the call data records (CDR) racket busted by the Thane police, an official said. While investigating the racket, the police chanced upon a call data record and traced it to a mobile number from Assam, the official of the Thane Crime Branch which is probing the case said last night. The Thane police officials then informed their counterparts in Assam to conduct an inquiry into it, he said. Last week, the Assam police arrested the constable, Bhubaneshwar Das, attached to the Haflong police station, he said. Das, working in the police's cyber cell, had illegally procured a CDR which was found in possession of one of the persons arrested in Thane, the official said. SEC charges Indian-origin man, business associate with fraud

An Indian-origin man and his business associate have been arrested and charged by federal authorities for masterminding a fraudulent initial coin offering (ICO) that raised more than USD 32 million from thousands of investors last year. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) yesterday charged Sohrab "Sam" Sharma and Robert Farkas, co-founders of a purported financial services start-up Centra Tech. In a parallel action, the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York also slapped criminal charges against the duo. The agency charged that Sharma and Frakas masterminded a fraudulent ICO in which Centra offered and sold unregistered investments through a "CTR Token."
