Hyderabad: Two held for running illegal tobacco units

Two persons were arrested in a raid at five illegal gutkha and tobacco manufacturing units in Hyderabad, on Monday.Raw material of tobacco and gutkha, valued at over Rs. one crore and manufacturing machines were also seized in the raids conducted by the Special Operation Team (SOT) Shamshabad at Maruthi Nagar and Attapur.The arrested accused have been identified as Sudhakar and Narsimhulu.Rajendernagar Police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.

Telangana: 2 children killed after wall collapses

Two children were killed in Telangana's Medchal on Monday evening after a dilapidated wall collapsed while they were playing near it.Two other children were also injured in the incident that took place near Shamirpet area. The injured were admitted to a local hospital for treatment.The body of the deceased, aged six and seven, were shifted to Gandhi Hospital for an autopsy.According to Circle Inspector, Shameerpet Police Station, the wall collapsed as it was in bad condition.A case has been registered under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and an investigation is underway.

Hyderabad: Man killed after guests denied chicken curry

A person was allegedly stabbed to death on Monday after the guests were not served chicken curry at an engagement function in Hyderabad.The deceased identified as Anwar was groom's cousin. Dalit protests: Mathura MLA's office ransacked

Office of a BJP legislator was allegedly ransacked in Krishna Nagar here by a group of Dalits who were protesting the "dilution" of the provisions of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, representative of the MLA said. 'J'khand Police weakened case of killing of 2 Muslims by gau rakshaks in Latehar'

An "independent investigation" into the killing of two Muslim cattle traders allegedly by gau rakshaks in Jharkhand's Latehar district in 2016 has claimed that the state police "weakened" the case. The report, brought out by a group of NGOs, including those based in the US and the UK, was today launched here in the presence of the family members of the victims. "Not only did the police not fully investigate the crime on the basis of eyewitnesses accounts and testimonies, but also failed to press appropriate charges against the accused. This has considerably weakened the case," alleged the report. The victims -- Mazloom Ansari (32) and Imtiaz Ansari (12) -- were beaten and hanged with a tree in Latehar allegedly by gau rakshaks on March 18, 2016. Fed up with eve teasing, woman commits suicide in UP

A BCA student allegedly committed suicide after she got fed up of facing humiliation due to eve-teasing by two senior students here today, police said today. The woman, aged around 19 years, was a second year student of Bachelors of Computer Application at the CSJM University here, they said. She hanged herself to the ceiling fan of her house, police said. The woman had told her father that two senior students -- Aniket Pandey and Aniket Dixit -- used to humiliate her daily, said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Akhilesh Kumar. The girl had also complained to police on March 12, but later she had said in writing that she does not want any action against the alleged eve-teasers, the SSP added. The woman's family members have levelled serious charges against Kalyanpur police. SSC cheating racket: Crime Branch arrests 4 people

Four people were arrested by the Delhi Police's Crime Branch for their alleged involvement in the SSC cheating racket that was busted last week in Timarpur by a joint team of Uttar Pradesh STF and Delhi Police, the police said today. The four arrested are - Anup, Neeraj, Kushal Negi and Dured Ali, police said. Police said that they provided internet connectivity to the candidates who were appearing for the exam, downloaded window sharing application and shared the password and helped the candidates in cheating, the police said. Police claimed that Ali was the owner of the lab where the examination had happened and the two labs which aided in the cheating are located in Patparganj and Badarpur. Four other men were arrested last week in connection with the racket and the case was transferred to Crime Branch from the north district police.

Man arrested for involvement in 50 burglaries

A 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly involving in around 50 burglaries in southwest Delhi's Bindapur, police said. Police recovered the jewellery, estimated to be worth Rs 20 lakh, besides stolen LCD, laptop and ATM cards, among others, from the accused, identified as Akash, a resident of Anand Vihar in Uttam Nagar and solved 17 cases, they said. The Bindapur Police had received a complaint of burglary and started investigating the matter, during which it came to light that the burglar had entered inside a house after cutting the iron net of the back gate of house. During investigation, the team analysed the CCTV cameras of the area for clues and found the footage the street dogs barking at the man and one of them was seen biting his leg, they said. JMM MLA disqualified from Assembly after court sentence

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MLA Amit Kumar Mahto has been disqualified from the membership of the Assembly after a local court sentenced him to two years imprisonment in a case, an assembly release said here today. The decision was taken by Speaker Dinesh Oraon under the provisions of the Representation of People's Act, after consulting the advocate general. Ex-TMC councillor, 6 others get life term for murder of party colleague

A court here today sentenced former Trinamool Congress councillor Shambhunath Kow and six others to life imprisonment in the murder case of a party colleague five years ago. The ninth judicial magistrate of Alipore court, Sujoy Sengupta, had on March 29 found Kow and his associates guilty of murdering Adhir Maity. The quantum of punishment was pronounced today. Public Prosecutor Shakti Bhattacharya said Kow knew that Maity was suffering from cardiac ailments and he deliberately hit him on the chest resulting in his death. Kow, then councillor of Ward 58 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, had hit Maity during a factional clash of the party over possession of a piece of land in Dhapa area off the E M Bypass on March 20, 2013. Maity was a member of the TMC's ward 58 committee. Kow had been on the run till his arrest from Balia district in Uttar Pradesh in April the same year. He was booked under murder charges in 2014. Woman raped by 3 men on pretext of job

An 18-year-old woman from West Bengal, who was lured to Delhi on the pretext of providing a job, was allegedly raped by three men in southeast Delhi's Govindpuri area, police said today. According to her complaint, she was brought to Delhi five months ago, when she was a minor and was confined in a house in Govindpuri by one Ashiqul Sheikh (24), they said. She alleged that Sheikh, along with his associates, Raju Sheikh (30), and a friend, whom she did not know, raped her on multiple occasions, police said. She alleged that they used to force her to make physical relations with other men and if she objected, they would threaten her and slit her wrists, they said. 3 men arrested for thrashing BJP MLA OP Sharma in east Delhi

Three men, allegedly in an inebriated state, barged inside Delhi BJP MLA O P Sharma's Preet Vihar residence and thrashed him after an argument over parking of vehicle, following which they were arrested, police said today. Mukul Roy pleads own case, court extends interim order barring arrest till April 23

The Calcutta High Court today extended till April 23 its interim order barring the police from arresting BJP leader Mukul Roy in connection with the death of a man in 2015. Owing to an ongoing ceasework by lawyers at the high court, Roy moved his own prayer before a division bench comprising justices Joymalyo Bagchi and R K Kapoor. Neither Roy's counsels nor the lawyers representing the state were present in the court owing to the ceasework. The court extended the interim order till April 23, directing the West Bengal Police not to arrest Roy in connection with the death of Mrinal Kanti Singha Roy till then or until further orders. The matter will be heard again before the division bench on April 16.
