Court dismissed Bharti's plea for further probe in midnight raid case

A Delhi court today dismissed a plea of AAP MLA Somnath Bharti seeking further investigation in a case of alleged molestation of African women during a raid in the national capital. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal dismissed the application, saying the points sought to be probed further were not relevant for the purpose of prosecution and that the politician would get an opportunity to prove his defence during the course of the trial. "There is no need for further prolonging this matter by directing further investigation on the points raised by the applicant (Bharti) as neither they are relevant for the purpose of prosecution nor are the facts which needs police assistance to unearth them. "Whether the applicant is innocent or is guilty shall be the subject matter of trial. Will issue notification on mixed-land use along 351 roads: Delhi govt

The Delhi government today said it will issue a notification on mixed-land use along 351 roads soon after the Supreme Court approves it, paving the way for legalising commercial establishments there. The move intends to avoid the sealing drive against commercial establishments along these roads. "We have submitted a notification copy in the Supreme Court seeking its approval. Once the Supreme Court allows it, Delhi government will issue the notification for these 351 roads," Delhi's Urban Development Minister Satyendra Jain told reporters here. He said that the government has appointed two prominent lawyers to strongly present the case in the apex court, as demanded by both the BJP and the Congress. The urban development minister said that the DDA should also appoint prominent lawyers such as Harish Salve on the sealing issue in the Supreme Court. SC issues notice to Centre on Chhagan Bhujbal's plea

Supreme Court on Monday issued a notice to the Centre on Maharashtra's former deputy chief minister Chhagan Bhujbal's plea, which has been filed in connection with the Maharashtra Sadan scam and Kalina land cases.The plea by Bhujbal had challenged his arrest under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 14, 2016, in connection with the cases, wherein he and his relatives have been accused of receiving kickbacks.The Bombay High Court had earlier dismissed Bhujbal's petition after the ED challenged the same.Bhujbal is not only being investigated for alleged corruption in contracts given for the construction of Maharashtra Sadan in New Delhi, but also various other projects during his tenure as public works department (PWD) minister of Maharashtra are under scanner.

SC extends Karti's interim protection from arrest

Supreme Court on Monday extended the interim protection of former finance minister P. Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram, in connection to INX media money laundering case, till April 2.Earlier on March 15, the apex court gave interim protection to Karti from arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the case till March 26.In May 2017, the ED registered a money laundering case against Karti for allegedly facilitating Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance for INX Media Ltd and Peter and Indrani Mukerjea when his father was the finance minister in the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

Bombay HC restrains rape accused trustee from entering school

The Bombay High Court today restrained the trustee of an international school in Andheri, who had been accused of rape, from entering the school premises until further orders, after the parents of some of the students approached it. The trustee, a French national, was arrested last year for allegedly raping a three-year-old student. He was granted bail in November last year and resumed his duties at the school. However, the mother of the victim, filed a plea in HC seeking cancellation of his bail. The parents of 42 other students from the school also filed an application in HC seeking that he be directed to stay away from the school since they feared for the safety of their children. Father axes his 4 children to death in Pakistan

A 57-year-old man allegedly axed his four minor children to death in Punjab province of Pakistan, police said today. The incident took place yesterday in Khambi Mera village in the Sara-i-Alamgir, some 225-km from Lahore. Police are investigating both aspects whether the killer had committed the brutal act out of extreme poverty or for being mentally ill. Police said Muhammad Ayub attacked his children with an axe when his wife was not at home. Balinese man gets 15 years prison for murdering Japan couple

An Indonesian court has sentenced a Balinese man to 15 years in prison for robbing and murdering an elderly Japanese couple last year on the tourist island of Bali. The defendant, Putu Astawa, was arrested Sept. 14, two weeks after the discovery of the burned bodies of 73-year-old Hiroko Matsuba and her 76-year-old husband, Norio Matsuba, by their adopted son in their rented house in southern Kuta. Police said the 25-year-old Astawa attacked the couple using a knife from their house after they resisted his attempt to rob them of about $99. He burned their bodies in an attempt to destroy evidence of his crime. He was sentenced to the maximum punishment by the Denpasar District Court in Bali's capital today. Astawa is not appealing the sentence.

MP reporter who said sand mafia after him run over by truck

A television journalist who had complained about threats to his life after he carried out a sting operation on illicit sand mining was today mowed down by a truck, officials said. Sandeep Sharma, who worked for a local news channel, had told the district administration he feared he could be killed by the sand mafia, his nephew, Vikas Purohit, said in a complaint to the police. The 35-year-old journalist was talking on his phone by the side of Ater Road in front of a police station when the truck, used to ferry sand, ran over him, the officials said. Purohit, in his complaint to the City Kotwali police, alleged that Sharma had been facing a threat to his life because of the recent sting operation he had carried out on the sand mafia. Two men have been arrested over the killing of an 85-year-old Jewish woman whose body was found after a fire broke out in her Paris apartment, police sources said today. Pak displays Bhagat Singh's case file for the first time

Eighty-seven years after Bhagat Singh was hanged for the murder of a British police officer, Pakistan today for the first time displayed some records of the legendary freedom fighter's case file including his execution certificate. Singh, 23, was hanged by British rulers on March 23, 1931 in Lahore, after being tried under charges for hatching a conspiracy against the colonial government. The case was filed against Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru for allegedly killing British police officer John P Saunders. The Punjab Archives Department could not display the whole record of the case file of Singh as it was not reportedly 'fully prepared.' The order on the anticipatory bail plea of Karti Chidambaram's chartered accountant S Bhaskararaman in the CBI's INX Media case is likely to be pronounced by a Delhi court on April 4. Special Judge Sunil Rana today reserved the order after hearing the arguments of Bhaskararaman, who was recently granted bail in the money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as well as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). In his application, the accused said he had already given the documents to the probe agency and was confronted with Karti, who was recently granted bail in the case registered by the CBI. Girl thrown off roof for resisting eve-teasing attempt

A 16-year-old girl was injured after she was allegedly pushed off the roof of a building by a man for objecting to his eve-teasing attempts, police said today. The alleged incident happened yesterday in the Diviyapur village under the Roza police station area here, they said. Police station in-charge Jasvir Singh said the 18-year-old accused and the girl were from the same village and knew each other. The accused threw the girl off the roof after she objected his attempts to eve-tease her, Singh said, adding she was injured in the incident. She was rushed to a hospital with the help of police and a case has been lodged in this connection, Singh said, adding a hunt was on to nab the accused.

INX media money laundering case: SC extends protection to Karti till April 2

The Supreme Court today extended the interim protection against arrest to Karti Chidambaram, granted by the Delhi High Court in the INX Media money laundering case, till April 2. The order came as the Enforcement Directorate sought an authoritative pronouncement from the top court in view of several conflicting orders of different high courts on the probe agency's power of arrest under section 19 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud was told by Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that the ED has been armed with the power of arrest under the statute, keeping in mind the several international conventions underlining the need to curb money laundering generated from drugs smuggling, terror financing and blackmoney routing. Man held for smuggling gold worth Rs 29 lakh at Delhi airport

An Indian man has been arrested by the customs officials for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valuing about Rs 29 lakh at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) here. According to an official statement released here today, the accused was intercepted by the customs officials after his arrival from London on Thursday. "His personal search resulted in recovery of 125 gold coins weighing 96 grams, having market value of Rs 28.88 lakh," the statement said. Gold weighing 1.178kg estimated to be worth Rs 33 lakh was seized from two passengers who arrived here from Malaysia, Air Intelligence officials said today. Two shot dead in Bihar's Jamui district

Two men, both 50-year-old, were today shot dead in their sleep by unidentified persons at Mohanpur village in Lakhimpur police station area of Bihar's Jamui district, police said The deceased - Shiv Vishwakarma and Bambholi Vishwakarma - were relatives, SHO Subhash Kumar Singh said. "The miscreants scaled the boundary wall of the house, entered their room and shot them when they were sleeping early today. Shiv Vishwakarma was shot in his temple, Bambholi Vishwakarma in his head," Singh said. Both of them died on the spot, the SHO said, adding that the bodies have been sent to Jamui Sadar Hospital for post-mortem.
