The body of a 25-year-old SSB jawan was found haning at his rented accommodation here. Rahul Gajanan , a resident of Kolhapur in Maharashtra was posted in the 50th battalion of SSB here and was living in a rented accommodation in the Janaki Vallabh Path Complex in the city, police said. The body was found hanging from a fan in the room, police said adding that it looks like a suicide case. Inspector in-charge, Upendra Ray said the body has been sent for post mortem.
The BJD's youth wing president of Dhenkanal district, Jashobanta Parida, was shot dead by unidentified miscreants at Kamakhyanagar in Dhenkanal today morning, the police said. Parida, aged around 40, was travelling in a car when the miscreants intercepted his vehicle and attacked him, said Dhenkanal Superintendent of Police Santosh Nayak. The assailants, who came in an sports utility vehicle (SUV), first hurled bombs at the car near Gandhi Mandir on Hospital Road forced the vehicle to stop. They subsequently opened fire at the youth leader after forcing him to alight from the vehicle, Nayak said. Parida was immediately rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him "brought dead," the SP said. The driver of Parida's car escaped unhurt, he added. Nageswar Rao on Monday recused himself from hearing the sexual assault case against Tehelka Magazine's Editor-in-Chief Tarun Tejpal.The case will now be heard by a new bench of the top court. The police has arrested a youth, found in possession of nearly 25 grams of heroin and cash worth Rs 1.30 lakh at his house in Jammu city. The police said acting on a tip off, they raided the house of one Mohit Baba alias Munnu of Janipur area in Jammu city and recovered 25 grams of heroin and a sum of Rs 1.30 lakh during the search. Following the recovery, the youth was arrested and the contraband was seized along with the money, the police said, adding a case under the NDPS Act has been lodged and the probe has been launched.
The police has arrested a cattle smuggler and recovered 32 animals in two separate cases of cattle smuggling in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. In the first case, the police intercepted a gang of cattle smugglers near Nakkian in Kathua district last night, said a police official, adding that the smugglers, however, fled the under the cover of darkness, leaving behind their herd of 23 cattle, which were seized. The smugglers, who escaped included two women and two men, with one of them identified as Ajay. The police is on look out for him and his gang members, the official said. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday sought a five-day-custody of former media baron Peter Mukerjea in connection with the INX Media case.Mukerjea was produced before a Delhi court earlier today.Mukerjea-owned INX Media Ltd had allegedly paid bribes to get a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) approval which was facilitated by former finance minister P. Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram.However, on Friday, the Delhi High Court granted bail to Karti in connection with the case, on a surety of Rs 10 lakh.
The Supreme Court today agreed to hear the plea of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) alleging that Haryana was supplying 120 cusec less water to Delhi out of the 450 cusecs of water it was supposed to supply. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said it will hear the matter on April 2. The counsel for the DJB said the Wazirabad water plant was supposed to get 450 cusesc of water daily, but nowadays it is receiving only 330 cusec per day. The Delhi High Court had recently told the Haryana government that it has to stick to its 2014 direction specifying the amount of water to be released to Delhi every day.

A local journalist was among two persons killed when an SUV rammed into their bike in Bhojpur district, with the family alleging that it was a case of murder and a former village head was behind it, police said today. Naveen and his friend Vijay Singh were riding a motorcycle last night when they were crushed to death by the SUV near Nahsi village. Irate villagers intercepted the vehicle, but its occupants fled. The mob set the SUV on fire, Avakash Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Bhojpur, said. Two Delhi Police personnel had a narrow escape when their motorcycle caught fire in southwest Delhi's Uttam Nagar today, police said. The policemen, an assistant sub-inspector and a constable, jumped off the motorcycle after it caught fire, they said. A call was received at 8.40 pm about the fire and a fire-tender was rushed to the spot, said a Delhi Fire Service official. The fire was doused within half an hour, the official said.
A 21-year-old man was beaten with iron rods and stabbed to death following a scuffle with a few men in northwest Delhi's Rohini area, police said today. Mahendra Singh was killed near his home in Rohini Sector 16 on Saturday, they said. Police said they were informed about the scuffle yesterday and when they reached the spot, they found Singh injured. He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead. One of the accused has been arrested, they added. A few days ago, there was a fight between two groups in which Singh was involved. He was out on bail in the case.
Two Dalit youths were tied to an electric pole and beaten up at Dhamna village near here, police said. A video clip of the incident went viral on social media today. Some persons from the village, which is under the Bamita police station limits, beat up Punnu Ahirwar and Chhota Ahirwar yesterday on the suspicion that they had torched a shop in the area the day before, police said. Over 180 alleged criminals have been arrested under the district police's "Operation Dastak", an official said today. The drive was launched in Ghaziabad yesterday to nab criminals who were at large, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vaibhav Krishna said. "Operation Dastak was launched to arrest such criminals who were absconding and not attending court dates. Non-bailable warrants were issued against them by magistrates and judges concerned to produce them before courts," the officer said. In total, 182 criminals were arrested since the operation was launched on Saturday, he said. The SSP said that 101 people were arrested in non-bailable cases. Police have seized around 12 kg of cannabis, 218 litter of illicit liquor and looted cash of around Rs 1 lakh during the operation, he said. This special drive will remain continue, the SSP said.
A woman Naxal was killed in an alleged encounter with police in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra today. The incident took place around 3.30 pm when a team of the anti-Naxal C-60 commando force was conducting a combing operation in Mouza Mendhari forest area, a police official said. Gold worth Rs 31 lakh was seized by customs officials from a passenger who arrived at the Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) here today from Muscat, a senior customs official said. The man had arrived by an Oman Airways flight and was interecpted as he went through the green channel. A search found that he was carrying 998.50 grams of gold, worth Rs 31 lakh, Customs Commissioner Sumit Kumar said.
