SC seeks reply from states failing to appoint Lokayuktas

Supreme Court on Friday sought a detailed reply from 12 states and Union territories for not appointing Lokayukta.A bench of top court headed by justices Ranjan Gogoi directed chief secretaries of states concerned to file an affidavit in the issue within two weeks and apprise the court about it.The reply has been sought from Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Delhi and West Bengal.Though the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act was passed in 2013 and came into effect the following year, the aforementioned states have failed to appoint the anti-corruption ombudsman.

Youth arrested for objectionable message on WhatsApp

The admin of a WhatsApp group was arrested after a BJP leader filed a complaint alleging objectionable post on the messaging application, the police said today. BJP divisional president Vineet Thakur had filed the complaint against the admin and another group member, after which the former was arrested yesterday in Khatauli town, a police official said. Thakur had alleged that a message, which was posted on the group, had "hurt sentiments" of a particular religion. BJP activists, led by Thakur, had staged protests demanding action, the official said.

Police foil attempt to loot ATM; constable injured in attack

A constable was injured after a police team was attacked when they challenged four robbers who were trying to loot a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM at Kolaras town of the district, an official said today. The robbers reached the ATM in a car registered in Delhi late last night and were trying to break into the cash dispensing machine when they were spotted by a patrolling police team, Kolaras Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Sujit Bhadoria said. The police team challenged the robbers who attacked one of its members, constable Sunil Bansal, with an iron rod, leaving him injured, he said. They escaped from the spot, about 30km from here, after snatching his rifle, he said. On getting information about the incident, district Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar Pandey reached the spot and a manhunt was launched for the miscreants who escaped towards Rajasthan in their car, the SDOP said. HC notices to Centre, state on plea against Gujarat GST law

The Gujarat High Court has issued notices to the Centre as well as the state government on a petition challenging the constitutional validity of the Gujarat GST Act with regard to some restrictions on firms in claiming input tax credit under the new regime. A division bench of justices Akil Kureshi and B N Karia issued notices last Tuesday, seeking replies from the GST Council, the Centre and the Gujarat government on the petition filed by city company Willowood Chemicals Pvt Ltd. The GST Council, the apex decision-making body for the Goods and Services Tax, is headed by the Union finance minister and comprises state finance ministers as members. The bench will next hear the matter on April 19. Ganja racket kingpin held

The police have arrested one person, allegedly the kingpin of a ganja smuggling racket spread across nine states, from Odisha's Koraput district. After eight months of search, the 48-year-old man was arrested from a relative's house at Jeypore following a tip-off, district SP Kanwar Vishal Singh said today. "He was in our wanted list since long as he was the kingpin in smuggling ganja from the area to other states. He operates a well-organised inter-state gang of ganja smugglers and is in this trade for past 25 years," Singh said. The arrested person's network is spread across Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha. Police seized a car, three mobile phones and Rs 7.20 lakh from the person during his arrest on Wednesday, police said.

Kamala Mills owner in SC against arrest, says it's illegal detention

The owner of Mumbai's Kamala Mills today moved the Supreme Court challenging his arrest in connection with a fire that claimed 14 lives in December last year. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan asked Ravi Bhandari to serve a copy of his petition to the Maharashtra government. The top court listed the matter for further hearing on March 27. Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Bhandari, said his arrest is illegal detention and he can't be booked for the offence of culpable homicide. He said the apex court has already held in the Bhopal gas tragedy and Uphaar cinema hall fire case that they are cases of negligence, which is a bailable offence. The Bombay High Court had recently dismissed Bhandari's bail application. Bihar: Explosion in illegal firecracker unit kills 5

Five people, including three children and a woman, were killed and 18 injured after an explosion in an illegal firecracker unit in Bihar's Nalanda district, a senior official said today. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief over the incident and issued instructions for providing adequate medical assistance to the injured, an official release said. The explosion occurred last night at a house in a crowded residential locality here, from where a man allegedly ran the illegal firecracker unit. House set on fire after couple elope

The house of a youth, who allegedly eloped with a girl belonging to a different community, was set on fire by a mob in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district, the police said today. The incident happened last evening in Mehalki village near Jansath town, about 26km away from here. According to a complaint, the youth and the 20-year-old girl, who belonged to different communities, had eloped last week. The family of the youth had vacated the house following the incident fearing attack, a police official said. The irate people of the girl's family is suspected to have damaged the house and set a part of it ablaze, the official said, adding that the fire brigade put out the flames. The situation is normal now after extra police was deployed to ease the tension, he said. Police are searching for the couple, he added.

3 Rohingyas held in Manipur

Security forces arrested three Rohingyas in Manipur on the charge of illegally entering India from Myanmar, police said today. A joint team comprising police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers arrested the Rohingyas from the town of Moreh, near the Indo-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district, yesterday night, Superintendent of Police S Ibomcha Singh said. The three are residents of Baguna in the Rakhine state of Myanmar, where Myanmarese security forces have been engaged in crackdown on militants and allegedly driving out Rohingya Muslims. The three arrested men were staying at Moreh for the last 10 days and had plans to go to Malaysia, the SP added. A case has been registered against them at Moreh police station.

Woman assaulted in moving bus, 4 arrested

At least four persons were arrested in Mau region of Uttar Pradesh for allegedly harassing a woman inside a moving bus, police said.According to the victim, she took a bus for her home in Ghaziapur from Varanasi when two men, the conductor and the driver, teased her and then raped her in the moving vehicle near Madhuvan area.They harassed and molested her in the name of dropping her home, the police said.The police have filed an FIR into the matter and are waiting for a medical report.According to the victim's mother, she was molested by the bus driver, conductor and their friends.Madhuvan area Circle Officer, Shweta Ashutosh has, however, said the woman was raped but it was not a gang rape.Further investigation is on into the matter, the official said.

The Allahabad High Court on Friday barred jailed Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mukhtar Ansari from voting in the Rajya Sabha (RS) elections.BSP national general secretary and Rajya Sabha member, S. Sansitpat, an eminent Supreme Court lawyer, Satish Chand Mishra had filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court for the release of two MLAs Mukhtar Ansari of the BSP and Hariom Yadav of the Samajwadi Party (SP), so that they could participate in the voting on March 23.Ansari is the prime accused in the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Krishnanand Rai, among other crimes, and has pleaded not guilty.In September 2017, Ansari was acquitted in connection with contractor Manna Singh's murder case.In 2010, he was also booked for the murder of Ram Singh Maurya, who was a witness to the murder of Manna Singh.The Rajya Sabha polls are scheduled to take place today.

Brazil Supreme Court delays decision on Lula imprisonment

Brazil's top court today delayed until April 4 a decision on whether ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva should go to jail if he loses an appeal next week. The Federal Supreme Court decision is a shot in the arm for the 72-year-old leftist leader, the front-runner for October's presidential election, and means he cannot be jailed for at least two weeks. The court, sitting in the capital Brasilia, was expected to decide whether losing an appeal next Monday at a lower court would automatically mean Lula's immediate arrest and incarceration, or if he would be given recourse to seek further legal remedies. Eight people were killed and 11 wounded after gunmen burst into a social event in central Mexico. The Guanajuato state prosecutors' office said today the mass shooting took place a day prior in the town of Purisima del Rincon. Prosecutors said gunmen pulled up in several vehicles, opened fire on those attending the event, and then fled toward the state of Jalisco. 4 men, girl held for throwing acid on woman

Sahibabad police have arrested four youths, including a girl, for their involvement in a conspiracy and allegedly throwing acid on a 24-year-old woman at Mohan nagar trisection on Tuesday.
