Family of slain Cambodian analyst granted refugee status in Australia

The family of slain Cambodian political analyst Kem Ley has arrived in Australia after being granted refugee status there, an Australian lawmakers office said, more than a year after fleeing home in the wake of his brazen murder. Kem Ley, a popular analyst and critic who dabbled in grassroots political organising, was shot at point-blank range while having his morning coffee at a gas station cafe in Phnom Penh in July 2016. "The Australian government granted them visas on Wednesday 14 February 2018 and they arrived in Australia on Saturday 17 February," the office of Victorian state MP Hong Lim, who helped with the application, told AFP. Iran criticises Sweden for citizenship given to death row spy

Iran has formally criticised Sweden over its decision to grant nationality to an Iranian professor sentenced to death on spying charges, the foreign ministry said today. Sweden granted citizenship last week to Ahmadreza Djalali, a Stockholm-based specialist in emergency medicine. He was arrested during a brief visit to Iran in April 2016 and found guilty in October of passing information about two Iranian nuclear scientists to Israels Mossad intelligence agency that led to their assassinations. Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Ghasemi said the decision to grant a convict citizenship was "very strange, unprincipled and questionable" and that the Swedish ambassador was summoned on Monday. Frame scheme for relief to Army porters' kin on par with soldiers:SHRC to J-K govt

The Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has recommended that the state government frame a scheme for providing compensation to family members of porters who work with Army and die in the line of duty, on par with the soldiers, a spokesperson of the rights panel said. "It is unfortunate that a person working with the Army like a solider has not been paid (compensation) by anybody," chairperson of SHRC Justice Bilal Nazki (retd) said in his order while disposing off a case. According to the SHRC spokesperson, the order in the case came up during an on the spot hearing at Dak Bugalow in Kupwara district. Man kills daughter as he wanted son in UP

Angry over the birth of a girl, a man and his family members allegedly killed his one-month-old daughter and later beat up his wife for protesting here, police said today. Additional Superintendent of Police Shailendra Kumar Singh said the incident took place yesterday. Rajesh Chauhan had married Sangita almost three years ago. A month back they had a daughter, but Rajesh and his family members were expecting a son. This led to frequent arguments between the couple, and Rajesh used to beat her up, the police officer said. "Yesterday, when Sangita returned her home after for some work, she found her daughter dead. As she started protesting, Rajesh and his family members beat her up. They locked Sangita in a room, and the baby was buried," the additional SP said. Banks sit over CVC's request to prosecute corrupt officers

The Punjab National Bank and two other banks are sitting over the CVC's multiple requests seeking sanction to prosecute nine of their senior officers allegedly involved in corruption, reveals data from the anti-corruption watchdog. According to norms, sanction for prosecution has to be decided within four months of the CVC's request. A total of 23 cases, involving 39 officials, including IAS and senior staff of banks, are pending sanction from various authorities for prosecution, according to latest data from the Central Vigilance Commission. Four of these 23 are related to banks -- two of the State Bank of India (SBI) and one each of UCO Bank and PNB. The CVC is awaiting sanction to prosecute nine employees of these banks who were booked by the CBI for their alleged involvement in corruption. Mob lynches 2 men accused of raping, killing minor

A mob barged into a police station, dragged out two men accused of raping and killing a minor and then lynched him on the streets in a town in Arunachal Pradesh's Lohit district, police said today. The two had been arrested for the alleged rape and murder of a five-year-old girl at Namgo village in the district, the police said. The mob yesterday overpowered the police personnel at the Tezu police station and pulled the two accused -- Sanjay Sobar and Jagdish Lohar of Assam -- out of the lockup. The crowd then stripped the men, dragged them through the streets and beat them to death, the police said. Chief Minister Pema Khandu has ordered a police inquiry and also a magisterial probe into the incident. The body of the girl, who had been missing since February 12, was found near a tea garden, a few kilometres from the village, on Sunday. The police claimed the two accused had confessed to the crime. 2 lawyers shot dead by cousin at Lahore sessions court

A Pakistani lawyer allegedly shot dead his two cousins in Lahores sessions court today over a property issue, police said, the second shooting incident in a month within the premises. Senior Superintendent Police Lahore Mubashir Makan told reporters that three cousin lawyers Kashif, Nadim and Awais had appeared in a property case before a sessions judge. After hearing they started exchanging harsh words that led to a physical brawl between them. Cabinet approves setting up tribunal to settle Mahanadi water dispute

The Union Cabinet today approved the setting up of a tribunal to resolve the dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh on sharing Mahanadi river water, official sources said. The decision by the Cabinet comes following the Supreme Court directive to the Centre last month to form the tribunal within a month to resolve the long-standing dispute. The Odisha government had moved the court in December, 2016, seeking an order asking Chhattisgarh to stop its construction work in projects on the upstream of Mahanadi, saying it had affected the river flow in the state. It had also pitched for setting up of the tribunal. The tribunal would determine water sharing among basin states on the basis of the overall availability of water in the complete Mahanadi basin, contribution of each state, the present utilisation of water resource in each state and the potential for future development, official sources said. Sri Lankan among 2 executives held for raping employee in AP

A Sri Lankan national was among two senior executives of a private company arrested for allegedly raping a woman employee of the firm, an official said. The accused were identified as Dileep Pinto (55), a Sri Lankan who worked as general manager of the company, and Malla Shyam Sundar (30), a senior executive officer of the firm, DSP (SC/ST Cell) Ch Vivekananda said, adding they were arrested on February 18. Rajasthan mulls death penalty for child rapists

PNB fraud: SC to hear PIL seeking SIT probe on Friday

The Supreme Court today agreed to hear on Friday a plea seeking an SIT probe and other reliefs in the over Rs 11,000 crore PNB fraud. Two separate petitions were filed before the apex court yesterday seeking its direction to the Centre to initiate the process of deportation of Nirav Modi, who is abroad, and others allegedly involved in the case as soon as possible, preferably within two months.
