Uttarakhand fake encounter: HC convicts 7 cops, frees 10

The Delhi High Court today gave life imprisonment to seven suspended Uttarkhand policemen for killing a 22-year-old MBA student in a fake encounter in Dehradun in 2009. The court, however, set aside the conviction and life term of 10 other suspended policemen. A bench of Justices S Muralidhar and I S Mehta upheld the trial court's June 9, 2014 verdict regarding seven policemen, who murdered Ranbir Singh on July 3, 2009. The details of the judgement are awaited as the judges only read out the operative portion during the pronouncement. The policemen in their appeal had alleged that Ranbir Singh, a resident of Ghaziabad, had gone to Dehradun with two others for a dacoity and snatched the service revolver of one of them. All of them were on security duty on July 3, 2009, in view of the visit of then president Pratibha Patil. CBI has submitted before the court that the victim had gone to Dehradun to take up a job on July 3, 2009 and the theory of the convicts "is a story".

Victims push for accountability after latest Nassar sentence

The worst sex-abuse case in sports history ended with a third long prison sentence for Larry Nassar, and his victims vowed to keep fighting for accountability in the scandal that upended the gymnastics world and raised alarms about the sport's ask-no-questions culture. Long after the disgraced doctor is locked up in a federal prison, investigations into his misconduct will go on, perhaps for years. "We have taken care of one perpetrator. We have not taken care of the systems that allowed him to flourish," said Rachael Denhollander, who filed a police report in 2016 about how Nassar had molested her 16 years earlier, when she was 15, with her mother in the room. The latest sentence of 40 to 125 years handed down on Monday was for molesting young athletes at Twistars, an elite Michigan gymnastics club. The sentence is largely symbolic because Nassar, who pleaded guilty, is already assured of spending the rest of his life behind bars. Before serving his two state terms, ...

Cosby's lawyers: We were wrong about hidden-evidence claim

Bill Cosby's lawyers admitted today that they wrongly accused prosecutors in his criminal sexual-assault case of withholding evidence, an assertion seething prosecutors blasted as "outrageous and reckless." Members of Cosby's retooled defense team acknowledged in a court filing that they made the bold, headline-grabbing claim last month without realizing prosecutors had already told Cosby's former lawyer about interviewing a woman who cast doubt on his accuser. Prosecutors said the former Cosby lawyer, Brian McMonagle, contacted them the day after the Cosby team made the allegations and that he confirmed being aware that the prosecution interviewed Marguerite Jackson before Cosby's first trial, which ended in a hung jury last June. A retrial is scheduled to begin April 2. Cosby's lawyers claimed in a Jan 26 court filing that prosecutors failed to disclose the interview until recently and that detectives had destroyed their notes.
