Schoolboy's murder: CBI gives clean chit to bus conductor

The CBI today gave a clean chit to bus conductor Ashok Kumar, arrested earlier by the Gurgaon Police in the case of killing of a seven-year-old boy at a private school in Bhondsi here. In its charge sheet filed before a Gurgaon court, the agency urged it to discharge the conductor citing that there was no evidence against him and that he was coerced by the Gurgaon Police to confess to the crime. The agency named Kumar, who is currently on bail, in its final report filed before Additional Sessions Judge Jasbir Singh Kundu but did not array him as an accused. "It is prayed since no evidence by the CBI against conductor Ashok Kumar for his involvement in any manner in the murder..., this court may kindly discharge him in this case," the CBI said. HC allows 13-yr-old tribal rape victim to abort pregnancy

The Chhattisgarh High Court has allowed a 13-year-old tribal girl, a rape victim, to abort her foetus. Justice Sanjay K Agrawal passed the order on February 2 after going through a report submitted by a medical board, said the rape victim's lawyer Rohit Sharma. The court directed that a five-member medical board headed by the dean of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar Memorial Medical College, Raipur, supervise the termination of the pregnancy. The girl, resident of Narayanpur district, was allegedly raped by four men several times. It came to light last month when she was found to be pregnant, following which the police registered a case. The Narayanpur district child welfare committee asked the Jagdalpur Medical College Hospital to conduct a medical examination of the girl. A report prepared by the hospital said she was 22-24 weeks pregnant. The hospital, however, refused to carry out abortion, citing legal provisions. The law does not permit termination of pregnancy after 20 weeks ..

Four persons including constable arrested for smuggling heroin

Four persons including a police constable were arrested here today for smuggling heroin and around 46 gram of the banned narcotics was seized from their possession, an officer said. Acting on a tip off, district Anti Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) apprehended and arrested constable Mebanson Shylla and his friend, Franky Wahlang, from Golflink area here. Following the lead provided by the arrested constable, a 58-year-old Manipuri supplier identified as Zangkhol A L and Vicky Kipgen were arrested from Madanriting Bazar area in the city, the police officer told PTI. During searches, the ANTF team seized 0.17 gram of heroin from the constable, 4.13 gram of heroin from his friend. Another 42.39 gram of heroin was also seized from the possession of Zangkhol and Kipgen from Manipur, he said. According to the ANTF, preliminary investigation revealed that Kipgen was the main carrier who brought the banned narcotic substances from Manipur to Shillong.

SC seeks BCCI response on Sreesanth's plea against life ban

The Supreme Court today sought a response from BCCI on controversial cricketer S Sreesanth's plea challenging a Kerala High Court verdict restoring the life ban imposed on him by the apex cricket body in the wake of the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the two members of the committee, which had recommended life ban on Sreesanth, to file their responses within four weeks. Senior advocate Salman Khurshid, representing the cricketer, told the bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, that the life ban was extremely harsh penalty and moreover, the cricketer has not been playing for last five years which was more than enough. An adult woman is free to choose where she wants to live and with whom, the Supreme Court today said. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had summoned a woman for an interaction after her sister and brother had moved the court alleging she had been abducted and forced to live with a person in a Haryana village. Dayawanti appeared before the bench, also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, and said she was willingly living with her partner, Jagdish, and would like to remain in her new house. Sebi bans Insure Life Infra, its directors for 4 years

Sebi today banned Insure Life Infrastructure India along with its present and former directors from the securities market for at least four years and also directed them to refund money collected illegally from investors in three months. These directors have also been restrained from holding key managerial position of any listed company for four years, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in an order. The firm was involved in illegal mobilisation of funds from the public through schemes in the nature of Collective Investment Schemes (CISs) without obtaining registration from Sebi, thereby contravening CIS and PFUTP (Prohibition of Fraudulent and Unfair Trade Practices) norms, it said. "It appears that the company is merely mobilising money from customers under its various schemes in the guise of selling plots," it added. According to Sebi, the firm has collected about Rs 12 crore as final payment under its various schemes between 2010 -11 and 2013-14. ..

Anti-Sikh riots: BJP files complaint with cops against Tytler

The BJP today filed a complaint with the Delhi Police against senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. BJP national secretary R P Singh met the Additional Police Commissioner, New Delhi, and filed a complaint which was based on purported video clips concerning the Congress leader. The video clips were released in a press conference by Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee president Manjit Singh GK. "It has been requested in the complaint that since the accused can leave the country any time hence he should be arrested immediately and prosecuted under IPC sections 302, 147/149 and 120-B," R P Singh said in a statement. Earlier on the day, Manjit Singh GK said that they would send copies of the video clips to various authorities and demanded arrest of the Congress leader.

Woman who threw eggs at Patnaik moved to Cuttack hospital

The woman accused of throwing eggs at Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Pattanaik at a public meeting was today rushed to SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack as she fell very ill at the district headquarters hospital here, officials here said. The woman had been arrested at Talasari in Balasore district on January 31 after she threw the eggs at Patnaik. She was produced at the judicial magistrate (first class) Court at Jaleswar and sent to jail till February 8. The woman fell ill when in the jail and was being treated at the district headquarters hospital. Balasore chief district medical officer Bibekananda Das said she was referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital with complaints of vomiting and giddiness. 5 people arrested for drug trafficking in Nepal

Nepal police today arrested five people for their involvement in drugs smuggling and seized a large quantity of hashish and other narcotics from their possession. The arrests were made in two separate incidents and involved local people, police said. Two persons were arrested at Gumba Bridge on the outskirts of the capital Kathmandu and 25 kilogrammes of hashish was recovered from them, police said. The duo aged 25 and 24 years from Dhading district were currently staying at Tarkeshwor Municipality near Kathmandu, they said. The illegal drug was found hidden inside a car during a security check, police said. In another incident, three persons were arrested near here with a large quantity of narcotic drugs including spasmo and phenergan, police added.

KVIC seeks Rs 525 cr damages from Fab India for using Khadi

Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has sent a legal notice to Fab India, a chain of ethnic wear retail outlets, demanding a whopping Rs 525 crore in damages for "illegally" using its trademark "charkha" and selling apparels with the 'khadi' tag. The KVIC, according to the legal notice, has also threatened to launch legal proceedings against Fab India Overseas Pvt. Ltd. if it does not desist from displaying the trademark similar to its own. A Fab India spokesman, however, dubbed the KVIC claim as "baseless", and said it will defend itself "vigorously" if any action was taken in pursuance of the legal notice. Man shot dead in Palghar district

A man was shot dead out of previous enmity at Kaman village in Vasai tehsil of the district today, police said. The deceased was identified as Baban Mali, hailing from Valiv village. Police have registered a case of murder against 12 persons and detained three of them. Two others, who were with Mali at the time of the incident, were also attacked and injured.

Anti-Sikh riots:Centre for ex-DG NR Wasan as member of new SIT

The Centre today moved the Supreme Court requesting it to include former DG-rank officer Navneet Rajan Wasan in a new three-member SIT formed by it to supervise further probe into 186 anti-Sikh riot cases. The government sought replacement of retired IG-rank officer Rajdeep Singh, who is currently one of the SIT members, by Wasan, who had earlier served as Director General of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D). A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud posted the plea, which sought a modification of its January 11 order, for hearing after a week. Maha CM shielded two BJP MLAs in bank loan fraud case: Patole

Former BJP MP Nana Patole today alleged that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has been "shielding" two party MLAs who he said have been involved in the "fraudulent disbursal" of loans to the tune of Rs 15 crore of a Dhule-based cooperative bank in 2016. Questionning the "Mr Clean" image of the chief minister, Patole alleged the CM-headed Home ministry transferred the fraud case from the SIT to the CID so as to protect the two MLAs. However, Patole, who joined the Congress after quitting the BJP, did not name the MLAs during his press conference. "The MLAs were involved in the alleged fraudulent disbursal of loans amounting to Rs 15 crore by Dadasaheb Rawal Cooperative Bank in Dhule in 2016," he claimed. Two convicted for murder, sentenced to life in prison

Two persons were today convicted of killing a man and were sentenced to life in prison by the district court here. The Thane district judge PP Jadhav also fined the two Rs 20,000 each. Javed alias Java Noor Ahmed Shaikh and Mohammad Aslam alias Sheru Mohammad Hanif Shaikh had killed one Mehmood Khan on January 20, 2014 after Khan refused to let the duo consume drugs in his hut, police said. Charge sheet filed in case of killings of 6 cops in Kashmir

Police today filed a charge sheet in the case of killings of six policemen including an SHO in Achabal of south Kashmir last year, and claimed that Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants were involved in it. "An SIT (special investigation team) was formed which filed a comprehensive charge sheet against four accused before a Sessions Court in Anantnag," a police official said. Achabal SHO Feroz Ahmad Dar and five others were killed in the attack on June 15, 2017. The police official said that during the investigation of the case, it was established that the Pakistan-based Lashkar- e-Taiba (LeT) militants, headed by Bashir Lashkari, were involved in the attack.
