SC asks khap not to behave like society's conscience keeper

The Supreme Court today asked khap panchayats not to behave like the conscience keeper of society, pointing out that a marriage between two adults was governed by the law. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said it would set up a high-level committee consisting of senior police officers to deal with issues relating to intervention in marriages by bodies such as khap panchayats. "Whether the law prohibits or allows a particular marriage, the law will take its own course. Don't be the conscience keeper (of society)," the bench, also comprising justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, said. The observation came when a counsel representing a khap panchayat said it had been encouraging inter-caste and inter- faith marriages and referred to provisions of the Hindu Marriage Act which prohibit a union between 'sapinda' relationships or close blood relatives among Hindus. AAP govt defends in HC law criminalising consumption of beef

The Department of Animal Husbandry of the Delhi government made the submission on an affidavit filed before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar which listed the matter for further hearing on May 16. Rape of minor: Court slams UP cops for lack of sensitivity

A Delhi court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for raping a nine-year-old girl in Ghaziabad in 2013, and came down heavily on the conduct of Uttar Pradesh Police by ordering action against its prosecutor and a woman constable for "lack of sensitivity" in handling the case. The court was irked as UP Police had turned away the victim and her parents, who were residents of the national capital, and asked them to approach Delhi Police even though the incident took place in Ghaziabad. The court said it was "more shocking" that this offence took place within eight months of the "infamous" December 16 gangrape case in which a paramedical student was raped by five men. The woman later succumbed to injuries. The court made these sharp remarks while handing down life term to the auto-rickshaw driver for kidnapping and raping the child in August 2013. "The conduct of the UP Police is a matter of concern as in this case, despite coming to know about the commission of the ...
