Schoolboy's murder: CBI files charge sheet in Gurgaon court

The CBI today filed a charge sheet in a Gurgaon Court against a 16-year-old student in the case of murder of a seven-year-old boy at a private school at Bhondsi. The charge sheet was filed before the court of Additional Sessions Judge Jasbir Singh Kundu, which is treating the juvenile accused as an adult for allegedly committing the murder of the child. The details of the charge sheet are awaited. The victim's body was found with the throat slit in the washroom of the school on September 8 last year. Earlier, the court had barred the media from using the name of the 16-year-old juvenile accused in the case and asked it to use fictitious names instead. While the seven-year-old victim was named "Prince" by the court, the juvenile accused was named "Bholu" and the school was referred to as "Vidyalaya". On January 8, the court had rejected the bail plea of the juvenile accused, imposed a cost of Rs 21,000 for "wasting the court's time" in baseless litigation and directed his .

Singapore will amend a law that allowed a megachurch pastor to escape a harsher prison term for fraud despite funnelling millions in church funds into his wife's music career, a senior official said today, following a public backlash. Man held with gold bars in body cavity at Imphal airport

A Kolkata-bound passenger has been apprehended by CISF officials at the airport here for allegedly trying to smuggle gold bars worth about Rs 24.90 lakh by concealing them in his body cavity. The incident took place yesterday noon when the personnel of the security force detected metal pieces in the body of a passenger, identified as D Ahuja, during frisking and he was subsequently taken for detailed checking. "During thorough checking, the passenger revealed that he is carrying four gold bars (820 grams in total) wrapped in balloons inside his rectum. "The Kolkata-bound passenger and the seized gold bars have been handed over to Customs officials at the airport," a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) spokesperson said here. The man hails from Thane in Maharashtra, they said. The value of the seized gold is estimated to be Rs 24.90 lakh, he said.

Navy officer killed in mishap on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

An Indian Navy officer was killed when his car rammed into a stationary truck on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, police said today. Shrikanth Naagipogu (26), a Lieutenant, was posted at 'INS Shivaji', an Indian Naval station located in Lonavala, about 120km from here in Pune district. The 26-year-old was a native of Andhra Pradesh, they said. Naagipogu was on his way to Pune when his car rammed into a stationary truck on the expressway ahead of Bhatan tunnel near Kon village on Sunday morning, said an official attached to the Panvel Taluka police station said. Vehicles are not allowed to stop on the 95-km-long expressway. Truck driver Dilwar Patel had parked his vehicle on the roadside after its engine developed some technical snag. However, he hadn't put up any signal to warn incoming vehicles, the police official said. Muslim group presents memo to prez demanding security

A group of Muslims here today handed over a memorandum addressed to President Ram Nath Kovind to district authorities, demanding safety measures for the community. They had also planned to take out a march from Shahid Smarak to the Collectorate, but it was called off in view of prohibitory orders in place. They demanded a judicial probe into the Kasganj incident and a fair compensation to the family of Chandan Gupta, who was killed in the violence. "We gathered along with Muslim community leaders to take out a 'Tiranga Yatra' (tricolour march) to show our love for the country and the national flag," Shabana Khandelwal, one of the participants, said. US investigator into ivory, rhino horn trade killed in Kenya

Kenya police and officials say an American investigator into the illegal ivory and rhino horn trade has been found stabbed to death in his house in the Karen neighborhood. Nicolas Kamwende, head of criminal investigations in Nairobi, said Monday that a family member went to Esmond Bradely Martin's house Sunday to check on him after he did not respond to phone calls and found the body on a bed with a stab wound to the neck. Conservationist Paula Kahumbu said Martin led investigations into the illegal trade of elephant ivory and rhino horn that threatens the two species with extinction. Kahumbu said he was at the forefront of exposing ivory traffickers in the US, Congo, Vietnam, Nigeria, Angola, China and recently Myanmar.

CBI books billionaire Nirav Modi in Rs 280 cr cheating case

The CBI has booked billionaire diamond merchant Nirav Modi, his brother and wife and a business partner for allegedly cheating Punjab National Bank of over Rs 280.70 crore crore during 2017, officials said. The CBI has acted on a complaint from the Punjab National Bank, which alleged that Modi, his brother Nishal, wife Ami and Mehul Chinubhai Choksi, all partners of Diamon R US, Solar Exports, Stellar Diamonds, were in conspiracy with officials of the bank and cheated it, causing "wrongful loss", the officials said. The response to an email seeking the company's comments is awaited. "The public servants committed abuse of official position to cause pecuniary advantage to Diamond R US, Solar Exports, Stellar Diamonds and wrongful loss of Rs 280.70 crore to Punjab National Bank during 2017," the FIR has alleged. RTO killed as speeding truck hits him

The Regional Transport Officer (RTO) of Jajpur district was killed after a speeding truck hit him from behind at Sulia near Panikoili on national highway 5, police said today. The deceased has been identified as Manoj Kumar Behera, RTO of Jajpur town. The accident occurred when Behera along with his staff was inspecting vehicles carrying smuggled minerals and overloaded vehicles plying on the national highway near Panikoili yesterday night. An overloaded truck hit him from behind leading to his death at the spot, the police said. "The incident took place while Behera was inspecting vehicles along with a staff of his office at about 11.30 pm yesterday night. Four-year-old swallows ten rupee coin, dies

A four-year-old girl died after accidentally swallowing a ten rupee coin in Chandgiri locality in the city today morning, police said. Shalini Handge (4), the girl, demanded something to eat; her mother gave her a ten ruppe coin and asked her to buy something from a nearby shop, said P R Dhokane, in-charge, Nashik Road police station. The girl, while playing with the coin, swallowed it accidentally, he said. Her parents first rushed her to a local hospital and then to a super-speciality hospital, but she died during treatment, the officer said. Police have registered a case of accidental death.

Elderly woman killed by neighbour

A 60-year-old woman was killed allegedly by her neighbour who was angry with the victim for reported abusing his mother, police said today. The accused, Rohit Tayde, has been arrested and charged with murder which took place in Dombivili, said Thane Police PRO Sukhada Narkar. The woman, who used to take tuitions, lived alone. She was attacked by the 22-year-old accused with a hard object on Saturday and left to die in her house, Narkar said. The murder came to light yesterday morning. Man allegedly kills wife, two children

A man killed his wife and two children at their house in Meerpet area here in the early hours today, police said. M Harinder Goud, around 40 years old, who works as a technician at a dental clinic, is suspected to have throttled his wife and two children, a senior police official said. The deceased were identified as Jyothi, aged around 35, and the couple's son Abhitej (6) and daughter Sahasra (4). Goud is absconding, poice said. LOC issued against Rohini ashram founder: CBI to HC

The CBI today told the Delhi High Court that a look out circular (LOC) has been issued against Virender Dev Dixit, who allegedly kept girls and women confined at an ashram founded by him in the national capital. The agency made the submission after a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar asked whether Dixit had joined the CBI probe into the running of his ashrams as well as the complaints against him. During the hearing, the court also observed that the ashram was not a 'vishwa-vidyalaya' or university as defined under the University Grants Commission Act and it cannot therefore continue to represent itself as one. It observed that the Adhyatmik Vishwa Vidyalaya, in Rohini in north Delhi, has no legal status as it is neither a registered society nor a corporate entity according to the companies law. Paris attacks suspect refuses to answer questions at Belgian

The only surviving suspect in the 2015 Paris attacks, Salah Abdeslam, refused to answer questions today as he went on trial in Brussels over a bloody shootout with police that led to his capture. Sanitary worker killed by colleague during row over payment

A sanitary worker was killed by a colleague at the venue of a conference here last night, police said today. Vartak Nagar police arrested Babasaheb Waghmare (45), the accused, today morning on the charge of murder. The victim was identified as Siddharth @ Shidhu Ashok Varhate (26). Police said both were among sanitary workers employed at a conference organised by the Rotary Club, where portable toilets had been installed. DRI seizes 4kg gold at Nellore station

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a passenger from Nellore railway station and seized more than four kilograms of gold.The passenger was travelling from Guwahati to Tambaram in Guwahati MS Express on Sunday when he was intercepted by the DRI officials."On the basis of information, DRI officers of Vijayawada intercepted a passenger travelling from Guwati to Tambaram in Guwahati MS Express at Nellore Railway station on February 4 at about 5:15 pm", read a press note.The passenger was carrying a purple coloured bag containing one aluminum electric stove and another aluminum coal stove. On interrogation, the passenger admitted that the two stoves are custom made to conceal the gold, the note added.The gold bars weighing 4658 grams valued at Rs 1,43,00,060.The smuggled gold has been seized under customs act and the passenger has been arrested.An investigation in this regard is underway.
