(Reuters) - A group of vape shops in five U.S. states on Tuesday announced a trio of lawsuits challenging a rule adopted by the Food and Drug Administration that allows the regulator to treat e-cigarettes and similar devices like cigarettes.
Some members of a mining mafia today attacked a police team and tried to snatch the pistol of a trainee sub-inspector when they were caught red-handed illegally mining sand on the Yamuna riverbed here. The police team was attacked by the gang members at Barauth Khadar under Naujheel police station, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Aditya Kumar Shukla said. "The attempt of the gang members to snatch the pistol of trainee sub-inspector Sumit Kumar was foiled due to timely arrival of a heavy police force," Shukla said. The police officer said efforts were being made to nab the gang members. He said the department would also inquire how could the trainee sub-inspector go to nab illegal miners along with just two policemen, without informing senior officials. Shukla said that action would also be taken against erring police personnel if they had not followed instructions.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday filed a charge sheet against three Maoist cadres for allegedly threatening a police officer at Vellamunda in Kerala in 2014 for conducting anti-Maoist operations.The accused have been identified as Kanya, 34, a native of Mavinakere village in Karnatakas Chikkamangalur, and two absconders--Mahesh and Geetha--from Raichur and Dakshina Kannada districts in the state, respectively.In an official statement, the agency said "The accused have been charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections related to criminal conspiracy, sedition, provisions of the Arms Act and anti-terror law"."The case was originally registered at Vellamunda Police Station in Wayanad district of Kerala against CPI (Maoist) activists Roopesh, Anu, Jayanna, Kanya and Sundari. The customs department at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (NSCBIA) arrested a woman on charges of smuggling and recovered nine gold biscuits from her, officials said today. The value of the gold biscuits weighing more than 2.5 kilogram would be more than 78 lakh, a customs official said. The woman had come to Kolkata from Bangkok on Monday night. Officials of the intelligence wing of customs department found her behaviour to be suspicious and intercepted her, the official said. During a search, the intelligence wing officials recovered nine gold biscuits from her bag and her clothes, and then she was arrested, he said.
A total of 1,595 Short Service Commission (SSC) officers of the Army will be benefited following the defence ministry's decision to withdraw its appeals in the Supreme Court against a ruling by an Armed Forces Tribunal. Army sources said a total 978 male and 617 female SSC officers, commissioned before 2006, will benefit from the defence ministry's decision. Around four years ago, an armed forces tribunal had ruled that the SSC officers commissioned before 2006 were eligible to be treated at par with those commissioned after 2006. The defence ministry had approached the Supreme Court against the tribunal's decision. But the ministry has recently withdrawn its appeal in the apex court against the decision of the tribunal, the sources said. The defence ministry had made certain changes for officers recruited under the Short Service Commission scheme and several benefits were not extended to officers who joined the service before 2006.
Two people, who were trying to escape after allegedly stealing iron angles from a truck here, were arrested after an encounter, in which one of them was injured, police said. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) H N Singh said that on the intervening of January 29-30, the accused stole the angles from a truck that was parked near a weighing bridge in Loha Mandi. Driver, Mobin, a native of Haryana, was sleeping inside the vehicle. Four robbers reached there around 3.00 am and took him at gun point. They also snatched his money and other belongings, the SSP said. The driver informed a PCR van and a police team cordoned the robbers near a business institute near Dasna town. In the cross firing incident one policeman and a burglar were injured, he said. Two -- Rahees and Islam -- of the four accused were arrested while the others managed to escape. Police have recovered the snatched money, one country- made pistol and four live cartridges from them, the SSP said.
The north Delhi civic body today partially demolished an ashram in Rohini, from where several women allegedly kept in illegal confinement were rescued last month, for alleged violation of the civic norms. The fifth floor of Virendra Dev Dixit's 'Adhyatmik Vishwa Vidhyalaya' in Vijay Vihar area was demolished for alleged violation of the civic norms, official sources said. "The RCC columns and tin sheds erected on top of the fourth floor were removed and one point at second floor was also sealed. Action was taken with the help of 20 workers and about 100 police personnel," the source said. The Delhi High Court early this month had termed "extremely suspicious" the conduct of Dixit, founder of the north Delhi-based ashram where women were allegedly kept in illegal confinement, and had asked the CBI to give a report on his whereabouts.
The Madras High Court today issued notice to the Centre and state government on a public interest litigation seeking a probe by the National Investigation Agency into the sale of unlicensed pistols by some persons who were recently arrested by the Tamil Nadu police. The petitioner, Karmegan, an advocate, submitted that the accused allegedly had links with the Islamic State terror group and used the money from the sales for such organisations. Illegal arms sales had reached an alarming level and it would lead to law and order problem, besides destroying peace and harmony in the country, the petitioner submitted. A division bench of the court's Madurai bench comprising Justices N Kirubakaran and Tharani, issued notice to the union home secretary and state officials directing them to file their reply by February 16 and posted the case to that date.

A 33-year-old "maid" was arrested for series of thefts in the city, police said today. Explaining the modus operandi of the woman, identified as Narmada Khan alias Bharti, a police official said the accused used to pose as a domestic help to secure job in flats in posh localities of the city. A complainant, a resident of Gokuldham in suburban Goregaon, approached police on last Thursday with a complaint that gold ornaments worth Rs 22.85 lakh and cash amounting to Rs 30,000 were stolen from his house between January 19 and 25. On inquiry, it came to light that the complainant's maid Bharati had stopped coming to work from the past several days. "But they didn't have any details about her whereabouts,"the official said. Based on their complaint, Dindoshi police registered a case under section 381 (theft by clerk or servant of property in possession of master) against unknown persons, he said. A court in Himachal Pradesh today extended till February 5 the judicial custody of nine police personnel, including an IG rank officer, in connection with the custodial death of an accused in the rape-and-murder case of a minor in Kotkhai on July 4 last year. Inspector General of Police Z H Zaidi, Deputy Superintendent of Police Manoj Joshi and six other police officers were arrested by the CBI on July 29 for the death of Suraj in police custody. Superintendent of Police D W Negi was arrested on November 16. Zaidi was heading a Special Investigation Team (SIT) which investigated the rape and murder of the minor in Kotkhai on July 4, whose body was found two days later. The case later came to be known as "Gudiya" rape-and- murder case. He had arrested six people in the case, but one of the accused, Suraj, died in police custody. The police had initially claimed that Raju, another accused in the case, killed Suraj. But when the High Court on July 19 handed over the case ..
The Himachal Pradesh Police has booked 47 people and seized 12.197 kg of charas, 38.279 kg of poppy husk, 54.5 kg of Ganja, 37.174 grams of heroin, 19.83 grams of cocaine and over 1300 tablets and capsules from across the state, police officials said today. The seizure was made under a special drive against organised gangs and individuals involved in possession, sale, purchase, transportation, cultivation of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. The drive was launched on January 19 for 100 days. During past ten days, 41 cases were registered against 47 people, including five Nepalese, for allegedly being involved in the crime, SP (law and order), Khushal Sharma said.
A car belonging to a Madhya Pradesh BJP MLA hit a motorbike near here, killing two persons, police said today. The MLA, Shailendra Jain, said he was not in the car when the accident took place in Sonkatch, about 40km from the district headquarters. The car driver has been arrested, police said. "A car with registration number MP 15 MF-0001 late Monday night hit the rear end of a motorbike, killing one person on the spot. "Another person on the bike was injured and died during treatment," District Superintendent of Police Anshuman Singh said. The deceased were identified as Ram Singh (45) and Santosh Malviya (35), both residents of Sehore district. When contacted on the phone, Jain said he was not in the car when the accident took place. The body of a woman, chopped into pieces and stuffed in a sack, was found dumped in Gachibowli in Telangana.The identity of the woman is yet to be ascertained."We received a phone call that a dead body has been found in a bag in Kondapur in the limits of Gachibowli police Station. A court here today denied bail to a juvenile facing charges of smuggling drugs from Punjab to Kashmir, a police spokesman said. Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kathua, Amarjeet Singh Langeh rejected the bail application of the juvenile, saying the evidence collected demonstrated that the consignment of narcotics was meant for illegal sale to public at large, particularly to the youth. The minor was apprehended along with two others at Lakhanpur on December 12 last year, the spokesman said, adding that a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered.
A 10-year-old boy was allegedly sodomised by two juveniles in Shahbad area of Rohini, following which the accused were apprehended, the police said today. On January 21, the victim was taken to a park by the two minors, who stayed in his neighbourhood, on the pretext of playing with him, the police said. They then sodomised the boy and threatened him with dire consequences if he told anyone about it, they said. The boy narrated his ordeal to parents, following which a case was registered and the two juveniles were apprehended, the police said.
The excise department sleuths of Cuttack district today seized over 450 grams of brown sugar, believed to be worth nearly Rs 50 lakh in the gray market, after intercepting a car on Mahanadi river bridge, near Gandarpur here. The excise flying squad has also arrested two persons in this connection and seized the vehicle in which they were peddling the contraband. Sources in the department said the arrested include a former tax collector of Khordha municipality. It also informed that the drug peddlers were carrying the narcotic substances in the vehicle to be sold in Bhubaneswar and nearby areas after collecting them from various locations bordering West Bengal in Balasore district. The squad had also seized around 280 grams of brown sugar, worth over Rs 30 lakh, after raiding two locations in the city in December last year. Two persons were also arrested in this connection last month.
