Delays in Bofors case should not be entertained: Venugopal

Attorney General K K Venugopal on Tuesday advised the government not to entertain further delays in the probe related to the 1980s Bofors case.Wring a letter to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) today, Venugopal said that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should not file a Special Leave Petition (SLP) before the Supreme Court in a case related to the Bofors scandal as it could be dismissed on grounds of delay and "could well prejudice its stand even as a respondent in the appeals already pending"."More than 12 years have elapsed since the May 31, 2005 order of the Delhi High Court, quashing corruption charges against the three Hinduja brothers in the scandal related to the purchase of 155 mm howitzers from Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors. 'Pak govt refers bill for public hanging to CII for review'

Pakistan government has referred a proposed bill seeking public execution of a convict found guilty of kidnapping a person below the age of 14 to a religious body for guidance. The proposed 'Criminal Law Amendment Act 2018' bill seeks an amendment in the Pakistan Penal Code section 364-A on the kidnapping or abduction of a person under the age of 14, The Express Tribune reported. The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) is a constitutional body tasked to help the government on legal issues with specific reference to Islam. The body's opinions are not binding. A meeting of the CII members is scheduled for February 8 in which the bill will be on top of the agenda, CII Chairman Qibla Ayaz said. "After thorough deliberation with all the CII members, belonging to various schools of thought, the CII will give its view on public execution," said the chairman. Man gets life imprisonment for murdering four-year-old boy

A local court today awarded life imprisonment to a man for murdering a four-year-old boy in 2015. District and Sessions Judge R N Bawankar also slapped a fine of Rs 8,000 on the convict Mohammad Salim Khan after holding him guilty under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code. Assistant Public Prosecutor Ujjwala Moholkar said Khan, who sold onions and potatoes at Turbhe market, and the victim's father knew each other. "On July 11, 2015, the victim and his father had gone to Turbhe market where they met Khan. The victim was left with Khan as his father had gone out for a brief period," the court was told. "When the victim's father came at the designated spot, Khan and the boy were not there. Khan took the boy and later killed him and dumped his body in a water-tank in Navi Mumbai. A student in Ludra village in Madhya Pradesh was allegedly burnt after a mid-day meal serving staffer threw hot 'dal' on him.Prince, a Class 1 student, had requested for some extra 'dal' when the staffer poured it on him.Prince's face, throat, chest and back has been severely burnt. Pregnant woman denied help at MP hospital

A pregnant woman in Madhaya Pradesh's Jaunpur district was force to deliver a baby at the gate of a medical center after being allegedly turned away by doctor because she had no bank account or Aadhaar card.The incident took place on January 29."When we went to the hospital, the staff sent us back, saying they won't admit her. She (the doctor) asked for some documents which we didn't have, so she sent us back. As soon as we moved out she gave birth outside the hospital", said the woman's husband.The medical superintendent rejected this claim."Doctor referred her to the district hospital. When she was referred, she told us that she will be taken there by someone she knew. When she reached the gate she experienced labour pain. She was immediately brought in and her baby was delivered. Kasur rape-murder case: Faith healer hangs self

Woman's chopped body parts found in 2 gunny bags in Hyderabad

Chopped body parts of an unidentified woman were found stuffed in two gunny bags near the Botanical garden at Kondapur near Hitech City here today, police said. While one bag contained the severed head and hands, another one was stuffed with torso, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Madhapur Division) N Shyam Prasad Rao told PTI. The body is that of a woman aged between 25 and 30 years, and her identity is yet to be ascertained, he said. "Some locals alerted the police after finding the blood- stained gunny bags lying by the road near the Botanical garden. After opening the bags, chopped body parts were found," Rao said. A case of murder has been registered and the body parts have been sent for forensic examination, the police said, adding a probe is underway. Gandhi murder trial did not attain legal finality: SC told

As the nation observed the 70th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi today, a claim has been made in the Supreme Court that the alleged conspirators were hanged even before the murder trial had attained legal finality from the top court. The apex court, which is seized of a PIL seeking re- investigation into Gandhi's assassination, has been told that the two alleged conspirators -- Nathuram Godse and Narayan Dattatraya Apte -- were hanged on November 15, 1949, 71 days before the Supreme Court of India came into existence on January 26, 1950. In an affidavit, Mumbai-based Dr Pankaj Phadnis, a trustee of charitable trust Abhinav Bharat, has countered the report of senior advocate Amarender Sharan, who is an amicus curiae in the matter, has not supported his plea to reopen the investigation into Gandhi's death. Kidnapped boy rescued in filmy style in Bengaluru, four held

A five-year-old boy, allegedly abducted for a ransom, was rescued by police who shot at and injured the kidnapper following a hot chase, police said today. The boy, Chandan was rescued two days after a four-member gang led by a notorious criminal kidnapped him here and demanded a ransom of Rs 35 lakh, they said. All the four including Divya Teja, who was injured in shooting were arrested. Acting on a complaint from the boy's father, police launched a manhunt and tracked one of the gang members, who revealed that mastermind Divyateja was driving with the child in his car towards Kengeri. Bihar boy shoots himself during video chat with girlfriend

In a shocking incident, a 19-year-old intermediate student allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself while on a live WhatsApp video call with his girlfriend in Patna.Bunty a.k.a. Godhra train burning: Accused held after 16 years

On the run for the last 16 years, an accused in the 2002 Godhra train carnage was today arrested by the Gujarat Police, an official said. Yakub Pataliya (63) was arrested from Godhra by a team of B Division police in the town after they received a tip-off that he was spotted in a locality this morning, the official said. "During patrolling, a team of Godhra B Division police received information about the presence of the accused. He was arrested soon after," the official said. The judicial custody of the accused in the Pradyuman murder case was extended till February 12 by Gurugram Children's Sessions Court on Tuesday.The accused, a Class XI student, was arrested by the Central Bureau Investigation (CBI) last year on the charges of killing Pradyuman Thakur, a Class II student of Gurugram's Ryan International School.Pradyuman was found in a pool of blood with his throat slit inside the school premises on September 8, 2017Earlier, the Sessions Court, which took over the case from Juvenile Justice Board, had dismissed the bail plea of the juvenile accused.The Juvenile Justice Board had earlier ruled that the 16-year-old accused will be tried as an adult.
