Land acquisition: Family refuses to accept farmer's body

The family of an 84-year-old farmer, who died after attempting suicide seeking adequate compensation for his land, has refused to take his body till their demands are accepted by the Maharashtra government. Former state chief minister Prithviraj Chavan demanded a judicial probe into the issue of the farmer's compensation. Dharma Patil, who hailed from Dhule district, had consumed a poisonous substance at the Maharashtra secretariat on January 22 to protest the low returns offered by the state government while acquiring his land for a solar power plant. He died at the J J Hospital here last night. His son Narendra Patil today said, "I will not accept my father's body until the state government accepts our demands. I am not going to accept my father's body because we have been fighting against the injustice done to us." Man falls off bridge in Chennai airport

A man fell to his death from a bridge at the airport here, police and airport officials said. The man, whose identity and other details are yet to be ascertained, fell from the departure bridge near gate no. 4 of the domestic terminal and died, they said. Padmaavat row: Suraj Pal Amu hospitalized

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suraj Pal Amu was admitted to a Gurugram Hospital on Monday after he fell ill.The BJP leader was scheduled to be produced before a Haryana Court later in the day.He was sent to judicial custody on January 26 over his statements against Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Padmaavat'.He was taken into preventive detention.The Supreme Court is also hearing a plea filed against Amu over his anti-Padmaavat protest.The BJP leader is infamous for offering Rs 10 crore bounty for beheading actress Deepika Padukone and director Bhansali in November 2017 for allegedly distorting historical facts and showing Queen Padmini in a bad light in the film.

Madhya Pradesh: 5 men abduct girl in police vehicle

An 18-year-old woman has been allegedly abducted by five men in a police vehicle in Bamurha village of the district.The incident took place in the wee hours of Sunday when a police team, responding to information about a drunken man lying on the road, set out to investigate the matter.After reaching the spot, two police officials got out of the vehicle to check up on the man.The moment they got closer, the suspected drunken man pointed the gun at the police officials."He then called four of his mates, who were hiding nearby. RPF official attacked in Odisha

A Railway Protection Force (RPF) official has sustained severe injuries after he had been attacked by three miscreants here.According to media reports, the incident took place late Saturday night, when three masked men, armed with iron rods, attacked Inspector-In-Charge Sushil Pathak near Old Malgodown area when he was returning to his staff quarters after completing his duty.He was rushed to a hospital after the incident.The motive behind the attack remains unclear as well as the identity of the attackers, who are on the run.An investigation has been initiated into the matter.

Siliguri: Clash breaks out between locals and cops

Clashes broke out between police and locals in Siliguri's Janta Nagar area on Sunday after the latter held a protest in connection with rape and murder case of a nine-year-old girl.Five policemen were injured in the clash, a police official said.The incident took place when the protesters, including the victim's relatives, demanding strict punishment for the arrested accused, reportedly turned violent.Unable to control the crowd, the police resorted to lathicharge, which made the situation worse.The situation is under control at the moment and police deployment has been beefed up following the incident, said the official.A landlord's son has been arrested in connection with the incident, which took place on January 25.The police have also arrested 12 people involved in the clash.

Pakistan: Probe begins as minor girl working in minister's house dies

Police in Pakistan's northwestern region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have launched an investigation after a minor girl, working in the house of a provincial minister, has died recently, The Express Tribune reported.The 11-year-old-girl, who was working at the minister's residence along with her elder sister, reportedly became ill after eating some fruits on January 25.She was admitted to a local hospital, where she did not recover and passed away.Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Inspector General Police (IGP) Salahuddin Mehsud on Sunday directed the Abbottabad police to launch a probe into the death of the girl.However, on the basis of initial investigation, police did not suspect any foul play in the death of the girl, who reportedly had a hereditary breathing problem.Her brother also died due to the same problem a month ago.A case has not been registered in this regard and authorities are awaiting medical report of the deceased.

Woman molested on Konark Express

An 18-year-old woman was allegedly molested in the wee hours today on an Mumbai-bound express train, Railway Police said. The victim tweeted to police about her "harassment by an unidentified molester" while she was travelling in the Konark Express, Senior Police Inspector Uttam Sonawane of Thane Railway police station told PTI. "Following the tweet, a case under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC was registered. Police visited her residence in Nallasopara (in neighbouring Palghar district) and recorded her statement," the officer said quoting the tweet. The accused boarded the train at Thane station, allegedly touched the woman inappropriately and tried to push her out, another police official said, adding that the alleged incident occurred near the basin in the compartment. The man fled after the woman raised the alarm, following which other passengers rushed to her aid.

Kasganj violence: 112 arrested, situation remains tense

As many as 112 people were arrested and security forces personnel intensified vigil in the strife-torn Kasganj in Uttar Pradesh where the situation remained tense but peaceful today, two days after clashes between two communities claimed one life. In the evening, the UP Police said the situation was headed towards normalcy. They also said three drone cameras had been deployed for aerial surveillance. Explosives were found during house-to-house searches following which the state police chief said the stringent National Security Act (NSA) would be invoked against the culprits. 'Padmaavat' violence in Gurgaon: 46 people arrested so far

The Gurgaon police today arrested four people, including a Karni Sena leader, in connection with the attack on a school bus and torching of a state roadways bus here during protests against 'Padmaavat', taking the total number of arrests to 46. PRO of the Gurgaon police Ravinder Kumar told PTI that a special investigation team probing last week's violence here arrested Harinder, the Karni Sena's Rewari district president, and his two supporters from Kurthla in neighbouring Nuh district. Police arrests illegal interstate arms syndicate member

A 25-year-old man, carrying a reward of Rs one lakh, was arrested for illegally supplying arms as a member of an interstate arms syndicate, police said today. The police arrested Delhi-based Shiv Pratap Singh under the Arms Act and seized one loaded sophisticated illegal pistol along with five live cartridges from him. A press note issued by the Special Cell of Delhi Police said he was arrested as a part of the special drive launched by it to cut supply of illegal firearms and ammunitions in the Delhi and NCR. "In the recent past, Special Cell busted a syndicate which was supplying arms and ammunition to the criminals of the Delhi-NCR. Mob ransacks house after woman's death

A mob today ransacked the house of a man at Haridev in Southern part of the city alleging that he was responsible for the death of his wife, police said. Puja Das, a housewife as found hanging inside a locked room of the house. She was rushed to M R Bangur Hospital where she was declared dead, the police said. After the news of Puja's death spread in the area, a mob ransacked the house of Swapan Das alleging that he was responsible for her death. Swapan Das was arrested following complaints lodged by the parents of Puja, the police said. Swapan was arrested on charge of subjecting Puja to mental torture ever since their marriage for not meeting dowry demands, the police added.

Man arrested for molesting minor girl at orphanage

The son of an orphanage's director was today arrested on charges of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation of a 13-year old Dalit girl inmate near here, police said. Austin (25) was arrested based on a complaint filed by the girl yesterday, they said. He had allegedly sexually harassed the girl for quite some time and threatened her not to reveal it to anyone. The girl has been sent with her relatives after recording her statement, police said. Cases under various sections of Indian Penal Code, the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences (POCSO) ACT and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have been registered against the man and further investigations were on, they added.

Cambodia charges foreigners after pornographic dance arrests

Cambodian prosecutors charged 10 foreigners Sunday with producing pornographic pictures after they were arrested at a party in Siem Reap town, near the country's famed Angkor Wat temple complex. Police said they raided a rented villa on Thursday where the foreigners were taking part in what organizers billed as a pub crawl and found people "dancing pornographically." While almost 90 foreigners were detained, all but 10 were released. The 10 arrested are five British nationals, two Canadians, one Norwegian, one New Zealander and one from the Netherlands. Farmer dies after allegedly consuming spurious liquor

A farmer died in the Sachendi area here today after allegedly consuming spurious liquor, police said. Sachendi, station officer, Jai Prakash Sharma said that the aggrieved family alleged that Ram Singh (50) died after consuming spurious liquor. Man kills father and two brothers in Telangana

A 26-year-old man allegedly killed his elderly father and two younger brothers over a land dispute in Nagarkurnool district of Telangana, police said today. The incident occurred late last night on the agri field of the family in Mamillapalli village. According to police, the accused, identified as S Mallaiah, allegedly stabbed his father S Bhaskar (65) while the latter was asleep before smashing his head with a stone. He separately attacked his brothers, S Srisailam (23) and S Ramaswamy (20) in a similar manner, one after another. "The family owns around three acres of agriculture land and Mallaiah had been quarelling with his father, apparently seeking the entire land for himself," a Uppununthala police station official said. The matter came to light this morning after a villager saw one of the bodies lying in the field. The accused was picked up for questioning. Police have registered a case of murder and further investigation is on.
