A jeep skidded off the road and fell into a pond this morning killing seven persons including two policemen, officials said here. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Rajesh Pandey, Sub Inspector Pradeep Sharma (48) and Constable Devinder Yadav (27) were returning after a raid when due to the dense fog, their driver could not see a deep pond next to the road and the vehicle plunged into the water drowning all seven passengers. The driver of the jeep however had an escape, police said. "Among the deceased were a middle-aged woman and her child. A 13-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy were among the deceased," Pandey said adding that the identity of the victims was being ascertained.

Four persons, including two women, of a family were arrested for allegedly tying an elderly couple to a tree and assaulting them physically at a village in Odisha's Jajpur district, police said today. The incident happened at Ranpal village under the jurisdiction of Panikoili police station on January 25 when 73-year-old Bhagaban Das and his 67-year-old wife Premalata were tied a tree in front of their house and assaulted over a land dispute, the police said. The accused, all residents of the same village, were arrested yesterday, a police official said. On Thursday, a quarrel ensued between the old woman and one of the accused over a petty issue. A division bench of Justices S C Dharmadhikari and Bharti Dangri said nothing survives in the public interest litigation filed by one Radhakant Yadav, a former MLA from Bihar, seeking setting up of a special investigation team to probe this angle. A Chennai-based police constable was arrested for allegedly possessing an "illegal country pistol" at a hotel near the central bus stand here, police said. Cambodia has arrested 10 foreigners for "singing and dancing pornographically", police said today, as the kingdom cracks down on racy behaviour at popular tourist sites. The group, which could face up to a year in prison on pornography charges, was due in court this morning after police made the arrests on Thursday at a villa in Siem Reap, the town connected to Cambodia's famed ancient ruins of Angkor Wat. Duong Thavry, chief of the Anti-Human Trafficking and Juvenile Protection Department in Siem Reap, told AFP that some of those arrested were expats and others were tourists who had been in the country for several months. A clash between members of two communities over an alleged eve-teasing incident in Sambhalheda village here left at least eight people injured, police said today. The clash took place last evening in an area under the Miranpur police station, following which a case was registered against six people, of whom two were arrested, Circle Officer (CO) S K S Partap Singh said. The officer said that a 17-year-old girl was allegedly harassed by a youth belonging to another community. Members of the girl's community confronted them and a clash ensued, he said. They threw stones at each other and at least eight people, including two women, were injured, he said. The injured were admitted to a hospital. Security at the village has also been tightened, the CO said.

The change in rules enabling even a single member bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to discharge judicial function has come under the scanner of the Supreme Court. The NGT Bar Association has moved the apex court challenging the validity of the National Green Tribunal (Practices and Procedures) Amendment Rules, 2017 that allows even a single member bench to perform judicial function. Earlier, the rules mandated that the NGT benches must have two members to hear and decide cases, the bar body said. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud has agreed to hear on January 29 the plea of the bar body challenging the amended rules. The Supreme Court has dissolved the marriage of a couple and restrained the man and the woman from putting photographs of each other in any mode at any place, including Internet and social media. While granting divorce, a bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra directed the man, an engineering and managment graduate from Maharashtra, to pay Rs 37 lakh to the woman towards permanent alimony within two months. A local court today sentenced former BSP MP Narendra Kashyap and his wife Devendri Devi to three-and-a-half years in jail each for abetting the suicide of their daughter-in-law in 2016. Kashyap, a former Rajya Sabha member, his wife Devendri and son Sagar were convicted by additional district judge (I) Shashi Bhushan Pandey in the dowry death case earlier this week, government counsel Lokesh Kumar said. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each on the former MP and his wife. The court had earlier sentenced Sagar to seven years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. The Gurgaon Police today detained Karni Sena chief Thakur Kushalpal in connection with the attack on a school bus and torching of a state roadways bus here during anti-'Padmaavat' protests earlier this week. At least 24 people have been arrested in the wake of the violence by fringe Rajput groups in the city, a police official said. A special investigation team set up by the police detained Kushalpal for questioning him for his suspected role in the violence, Gurgaon Police PRO Ravinder Kumar told PTI. Police have arrested the alleged co-owner of a firecracker storage unit in Bawana where 17 people were killed in a massive blaze on January 20. Police arrested Lalit Goyal yesterday and handed him over to the Crime Branch, which is probing the case. Police suspected that Goyal was a business partner of Manoj Jain, who is already in police custody. Goyal had applied for an anticipatory bail on January 25 but his plea was dismissed by a city court that called the allegations against him "serious". Goyal, in his plea before the court, had claimed that he was just a servant in the factory and was neither named in the FIR nor was he present in the factory at the time of the fire. An IPS officer was injured after he was attacked by colleagues for resisting illegal "recovery" from trucks carrying sand in Banda district of Uttar Pradesh today, police said. Superintendent of Police Shalini, who goes by her first name, said two policemen have been suspended in connection with the incident in Girwa police station area. "Senior IPS officers Himanshu Kumar and Mohit Gupta had reached Girwa police station this morning following complaints of illegal recovery from trucks carrying sand," Shalini said. "They caught station in-charge and a constable red-handed taking recovery (money) from the trucks. The cops attacked the police officers," the SP said. In the attack, Kumar was injured.
