City police on Saturday detained Gurugram chief of Shri Rajput Karni Sena Thakur Kushalpal over the recent violent incidents, including attack on a school bus and torching of a state roadways bus here, a senior police officer said.
A convict lodged in Chamba prison escaped while being brought to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital in Shimla today, but was arrested within six hours, the police said. Sunil Kumar, convicted in a drug trafficking case, gave the two policemen escorting him to the hospital a slip. However after intense search for six hours, the man was rearrested from from Krishnanagar, they said. A case has been lodged at Sadar police station. Kumar was sentenced to 10 years in jail in 2016, ASP Praveer Thakur said, adding the police are trying to ascertain the reason behind the convict managing to escape.
An assistant commissioner of police posted in Navi Mumbai has been shunted out in connection with registration of a false case against a builder and an alleged attempt to extort money from him. ACP (Turbhe division) Kiran Patil has been transferred to police control room, said Navi Mumbai police commissioner Hemant Nagrale in a statement today. The action was taken for Patil's "alleged poor supervision" regarding registration of a false case by junior police officers, the commissioner said. An administrative enquiry has been initiated against Patil, while Amol Zende has been posted as ACP Turbhe division, Nagrale added. A 59-year-old security guard at a post office in Rohini was allegedly killed by his minor nephew, who also stole money from there, police said. The minor was apprehended from his house today, they said. Around 7 am today, the police were informed about the body of the security guard lying in the post office. The man was to retire next month, the police said. According to Rajneesh Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini), Saini's hands and legs were tied and his mouth shut with a tape. There was an injury in the head inflicted by a blunt object. A Thiruvananthapuram Court on Saturday acquitted former transport minister A. K. Saseendran in Mangalam TV honey trap case.Following the chief judicial magistrate court's decision, Saseendran resigned from the Cabinet.The order came in a case filed by a woman journalist of Mangalam TV channel against the minister, alleging that he asked her for sexual favours. However, she later submitted a petition stating that she had filed the case on the basis of a misunderstanding and that the matter had been resolved out of court.The case dates back to March 26, 2017, when the newly-launched Malayalam news channel Mangalam TV aired the audio tape alleged to be that of Saseendran indulging in sleazy talk with a woman. A racket involving circulation of counterfeit notes of Rs 500 denomination has been busted with the arrest of two persons, police said here today. Fake currency notes with a total face value of Rs 4.97 lakh along with genuine notes worth Rs. 3.28 lakh were seized from them, Deputy Superintendent of Police N Sudhakar Reddy told reporters. The arrested included a non-practising advocate, he said. The man was trying to circulate the fake notes here earlier today when he was arrested, Reddy said. His accomplice was later arrested at Rajampeta in Kadapa district, the official said. Further investigation is on to nab some more persons involved in the racket, he added.

The Madras High Court has upheld a lower court order acquitting 19 accused in a case relating to the deaths of 35 people following consumption of illicit arrack in a village on the city outskirts in 2001. Dismissing an appeal filed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police challenging the acquittals, Justice M V Muralidharan recently observed that the prosecution had failed to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt. At the same time, the court expressed its concern over the "gruesome menace of consumption of liquor" in the country. Though the offence is heinous in nature that alone cannot be the criteria to hold that the case is proved, the judge said. Though it is a fact that 35 lives were lost, the evidence available is not sufficient to hold that the prosecution has proved the offence beyond reasonable doubt, Justice Muralidharan said. At least 38 people have been arrested or detained in connection with the violence by fringe Rajput groups against the screening of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's controversial film 'Padmaavat' in Gurgaon, police said today.
