Man held in UP for drug smuggling

The Narcotics Control Bureau here has arrested one person from Uttar Pradesh in connection with his alleged involvement in smuggling drugs. NCB Zonal Director Dilip Kumar Srivastava said its officials arrested Vinay from a Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh yesterday night in connection with the seizure of 2400 bottles of cough syrup used as intoxicant from Sealdah railway station in May last year. "The accused had booked that consignment from Varanasi railway station for Sealdah in a parcel van. The consignment was meant for Bangladesh. We have arrested the person and trying to find out who else are involved in it," Srivastava told PTI. The probe is on and two or three more persons are on the radar of the NCB in connection with this seizure, another officer of the NCB said.

Man arrested after Belfast explosion; no one injured

Northern Ireland police have arrested a suspect after an explosion in east Belfast. Police said today a 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing explosives with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury to property. Police say no one was injured in the explosion in the Fraser Pass area of east Belfast last night. Chief Inspector Stephen McCauley said the explosion was reported to police at 8:15 p.m. local time. The suspect has not been charged or identified. Police are investigating the explosion. Details about the device that was used have not been released.

Harvey Weinstein's ex-assistant files sexual harassment suit

3 tribals die, 12 fall sick after consuming home-made alcohol;

Three persons died and 12 others, including six women, fell sick after allegedly consuming toxic home-made alcohol in tribal-dominated Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh, an official said today. The district administration has ordered a probe into the incident. The incident took place yesterday in Sahidad village under Bagicha block when some local tribal families consumed 'Hadiya', a home-made brew made from rice, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Bagicha) Hitesh Kumar Baghel told PTI. The drink, popularly known as 'rice beer', is made after fermenting rice through a special procedure while mixing some herbal roots. At least 15 people, including six women, complained of vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain after consuming the drink yesterday afternoon, he said. Indian-American woman sues Weinstein for sexual harassment

Disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein has been sued by his former Indian-American personal assistant who has alleged that she was subjected to sexual exploitation and a "sexually hostile" work environment while working for him. Sandeep Rehal, who was Weinstein's personal assistant for two years from 2013 to 2015, has sought trial by jury in an 11-page lawsuit. For over two years Rehal was "forced to work in a pervasive and severe sexually hostile" work environment at Weinstein's company and "defined by endless offensive, degrading, and sexually harassing actions, statements, and touching at the hands of her boss," alleges a lawsuit filed in the Southern District Court of New York on January 25. A day later, on Friday, the court issued summons to Weinstein and his company to respond to the charges within 21 days. Two suspected Maoists killed in Chhattisgarh

Security forces today killed two suspected Maoists, including a woman, during an operation in the jungles of Sukma district of Chhattisgarh. Officials said a team led by CRPF's CoBRA unit and state police had an exchange of fire with suspected Maoists in the Bukameta-Chintalnar area of the district where they were on an anti-Naxal operation. "Two bodies, including of a woman, have been recovered. The teams are searching the area," a senior official said.

Six women booked for assaulting policemen

At least six women have been booked for allegedly assaulting a group of policemen at Pirani Pada in Bhiwandi when the latter had gone to arrest a man in a cheating case, an officer said today. The incident took place yesterday afternoon. "A team of police personnel from Bhiwandi Crime Unit and Oshiwara police station in Mumbai had gone to Pirani Pada in Bhiwandi to arrest a criminal when they were attacked by around six women," Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. 5-yr jail to man for pushing senior citizen into drain

A Delhi court has sentenced a man to five years in jail for pushing into a drain a 66-year-old person, who later died during medical treatment, saying the attacker did not have the intention but had the knowledge that his act may cause the victim's death. Additional Sessions Judge Satinder Kumar Gautam handed down the jail term to 37-year-old Raman for the offence under section 304 (II) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC and also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. "It can be safely held that in the case in hand, the accused has done the act with the knowledge that it is likely to cause death but without any intention to cause death and caused such bodily injury as is likely to cause death and as such, court is of the view that act committed by accused falls under part II of the Section 304 IPC," the judge said. Ex-Guatemala Supreme Court president shot dead

The ex-president of the Guatemalan Supreme Court was shot dead today during an incident on the outskirts of the capital Guatemala City, according to emergency personnel. Jose Arturo Sierra, who presided over the high court between 2013 and 2014, was attacked by unknown perpetrators while traveling by road, and was taken to hospital where he died, authorities announced on Twitter. While officials have not confirmed the circumstances surrounding the attack, local press reported witness accounts of two people firing at Sierra, 72, from a motorcycle. The CSJ "strongly" denounced the crime, which in a statement it said "adds to the widespread violence" in Guatemala. The International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) echoed the condemnation, and recognized Sierra's "vocation as a judge that he demonstrated in different positions in the Guatemalan justice system." A 24-year-old woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Kukatpally area of Hyderabad on Friday after falling off from a multi-storied building.As per initial investigation, the victim, identified as Ladlee, had accidentally fallen off from the fifth floor of her residence and died in hospital. One dead, two wounded in Amsterdam shooting: police

A shooting in downtown Amsterdam in the night left one person dead and two injured, Dutch police said. "One person has died and two wounded, a man and a young woman, were taken to hospital after a shooting on Grote Wittenburgerstraat, in the city centre," Amsterdam police spokesman Leo Dortland told AFP. "This is clearly not a terror attack, but a criminal incident," he said, adding that police were still looking for the attacker or attackers. Ex-Afghan hostage Boyle to undergo psychiatric assessment

Former Afghanistan hostage Joshua Boyle will undergo a comprehensive psychiatric assessment. Boyle's is facing a string of charges, including sexual assault, following his release from captivity. Boyle and his American wife, Caitlan Coleman, were taken hostage in 2012 by a Taliban-linked group and freed last year. His lawyer Lawrence Greenspon told an Ontario court Friday that an initial evaluation found his client fit to stand trial.
