China wind turbine-maker guilty of stealing US trade secrets

Sinovel, one of China's leading wind turbine-makers, has been found guilty of stealing proprietary technology from US firm AMSC, causing it USD 800 million in losses, the Justice Department said. A Wisconsin jury convicted Beijing-based Sinovel Wind Group Co Ltd, of conspiracy to commit trade secret theft, theft of trade secrets, and wire fraud after an 11-day trial yesterday. It said that in 2011, Sinovel recruited an Austria-based AMSC employee who stole source code from its computers that formed the basis of its technology for regulating the flow of electricity from wind turbines to electrical grids. At the time AMSC, formerly known as American Superconductor Inc, was selling its technology to Sinovel. Obtaining that code allowed Sinovel to drop its orders to the US company as it took the technology for its own, causing AMSC an estimated USD 800 million in losses. Fear in Meerut village after mother, son killed outside home

Panic and fear gripped a village in Meerut district after three men shot dead an elderly woman outside her home in broad daylight soon after killing her son a few hundred metres away from their residence, police said. The miscreants unloaded at least eight bullets into Nichettar Kaur, 60, within 30 seconds yesterday, they said. The woman's killing has been recorded by a CCTV camera installed at the residence in Sorkha village in the district. According to the police, Balmendra, 28, was on his way to Meerut city in his car when three men on a motorbike stopped him about 800 metres from the residence. They indiscriminately fired on him, killing him on the spot. The assaulters then reached his home, where Balmendra's mother, Nichettar Kaur, was sitting on a cot. The men then shot her dead from point-blank range, the police added. 2 killed in road accident in Muzaffarnagar

Two people were killed after a vehicle mowed them down on the Delhi-Pauri highway in Shivpuri village in Muzaffarnagar district, police said today. Rambir Singh, 50, and Ali Hasan, 55, were killed when they were returning home from a cremation last evening, they said. The bodies have been sent for post mortem examination. The driver of the vehicle managed to escape, the police added.

Brazilian court upholds Silva's graft conviction

A Brazilian court upheld the conviction of former Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for corruption and money laundering here on Wednesday, that has further dented his chances of running for the third term in the upcoming elections in October this year.The Guardian reported that the three judges at the appeals court in Porto Alegre voted unanimously on Wednesday to uphold the sentence of Silva and increased the penalty from nine and a half years to 12 years and one month.The latest court decision means that he could be constitutionally barred from standing in the presidential elections.The ruling led to violent protests across the country. Police arrests teacher for raping student

A physics lecturer from Hayatnagar area of Telangana's Hyderabad has been arrested for allegedly sexually harassing and raping an intermediate student.The 17-year-old victim, who is a student of Iqbalia College, mentioned in her complaint that her Physics teacher sexually harassed and raped her."We have received a complaint from 17-year-old intermediate student of Iqbalia college, stating, for past three months, her physics lecturer was sexually harassing her in the pretext of marks," confirmed Narender Goud, Circle Inspector, Hayatnagar.A case has been registered under section 376, 366 and 5 of POCSO Act and the accused has been taken into custody.Further investigation is underway.

Minor gang-raped in Betul, case registered

A case has been registered against five persons in Madhya Pradesh's Harda on Wednesday in an alleged gang-rape of a minor on January 11.The incident reportedly happened when she was on her way to school from Betul to Khandwa.The girl was threatened. Lula says will run for presidency despite court setback

Former Brazil president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva told supporters today he intends to seek another mandate later this year despite a court confirming his conviction for corruption. "Now I want to be a candidate for the presidency," Lula told thousands of supporters at a rally in Sao Paulo in the wake of the court verdict which dealt a body blow to his hopes of running. A Brazilian appeals court today upheld ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's conviction for corruption, effectively ending his hopes of relection this year. Two of the three judges in the appeals court in the southern city of Porto Alegre ruled that his original 9.5-year jail sentence be extended to more than 12 years. Pondy govt's act in recovering excess amount from contractor

The Puducherry government's action in recovering excess amount paid to a contractor for a work done nearly 30 years ago has been upheld by the Madras High Court. Justice S Vaidyanathan upheld the action of the Puducherry government recovering the excess payment made to a contractor for strengthening the tank bund of Ousteri lake in the union territory for work done in 1978-79. The judge said when there is an erroneous excess payment, it can be demanded or recovered by means of distraint proceedings. "The said proceedings is only summary, as calculation alone needs to be made and excess payment to be demanded/recovered. There is no need for any clarification or modification by the civil court or any forum regarding the amount due before the proceedings," he said. The judge was dismissing a petition from Sri Raman Constructions challenging the proceedings, on January 22. 21-yr-old man held for spying for Pakistan

A man has been arrested in Batala for allegedly sharing sensitive information pertaining to the Army and the BSF with Pakistani intelligence agencies, the Punjab police said today. The military intelligence unit in Jammu and Kashmir had informed the Punjab police that Gianbir Singh (21) was in touch with Pakistani intelligence agencies and was sharing with them sensitive information about the Army and the BSF. After receiving the information, Gianbir, a resident of Shikhar Massian village, was arrested, Batala SSP Opinderjit Singh Ghuman said. "We have found several Pakistani numbers on his mobile phone and are trying to retrieve data from the handset," the SSP said, adding the accused was in touch with intelligence agencies of Pakistan through WhatsApp. A case under relevant sections of the Official Secret Act has been registered against accused, who was working with a mining contractor. Further investigation is underway, the police said.

Officials: Girl shot in neck, abdomen in Texas school attack

Prosecutors say a 16-year-old student shot a classmate in the neck and abdomen at a Texas high school before firing at another student and missing. Prosecutors recounted the shooting at Italy High School, south of Dallas, during a juvenile court hearing Wednesday for the boy accused in the attack. He is charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities haven't released his name because he's a juvenile. Prosecutors say he repeatedly shot the 15-year-old girl in the school cafeteria Monday before taking aim at the second student. The girl is hospitalised and expected to survive. Authorities haven't released a motive. Prosecutors say the boy appeared to be angry with the girl. A judge ordered the teen to remain in custody and undergo a psychological evaluation.

Up to 175 years in jail for disgraced USA Gymnastics doctor

Disgraced former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison on Wednesday for sexually abusing scores of young girls under the guise of medical treatment. "I've just signed your death warrant," Judge Rosemarie Aquilina said as she handed down the sentence after a week of gut-wrenching testimony by over 150 of Nassar's victims. Pak parl body for execution of those involved in kidnapping or

A parliamentary body in Pakistan today demanded that a bill should be passed to allow public hanging of those involved in kidnapping or raping children under the age of 14 following the brutal rape and murder case of a minor girl in Kasur city in Punjab province. Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior Rehman Malik asked Senate, upper house of parliament, to pass a bill approved by his committee for public hanging. Malik said in a letter to the Senate Secretariat that changes should be made in Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) and the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in relation to punishments for kidnapping children. He said that the approval of the bill titled as Criminal Law Amendment Act 2018 would enable public execution of crimes of kidnapping and rape of children under 14. Violent protests gripped the Kasur city following the girl's murder that claimed two lives. The incident also stirred a national outcry demanding justice for her.

The first of three Brazilian judges considering the appeal of ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva voted today to uphold his corruption conviction and increase his jail sentence. Account Officer held for bribery

A Panchayat Samiti account officer was arrested today by the ACB for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 for extending an official favour. According to the ACB, the accused officer Suresh Gurav (41), had demanded money from Gramsewak for transferring government funds for the Dalit Vasti Sudhar Yojana. After the Gramsewak approached the ACB, a trap was laid and Gurav was arrested in his office at the Panchayat Samiti this evening, Thane ACB (Palghar) Inspector Deepak Barve said.
